The organizers of the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam, which will be held from June 23 to July 3 next summer, have invited the German National Team to the 2011 edition of the event. The German Baseball and Softball Federation (DBV) has accepted and will participate in the WPT for the first time ever, as announced by the DBV on Thursday. Besides the hosting Dutch team, the other teams are not yet known at this moment. Cuba has won the WPT for the last four times, defeating the Netherlands three times in the finals.
German national team head coach Greg Frady states:
“We are very please to accept the invitation to the WPT. As our organization continues to gain respect in the International community, invitations from world tournaments are beginning. This tournament will feature some of the most powerful teams in the world and will present a great challenge for our organization. As we grow and gain more International experience, we strengthen our position for future world tournaments. This WPT will help us take the next step in our development.”
The DBV also announced the extension of the contract with Greg Frady throughout the 2011 season. Both sides already reached an agreement a few weeks ago, when the Georgia State head coach was in Germany to accept the EBCA European Coach of the Year Award during the convention in Cologne. He is working with the German federation since 2004, leading the national team from the B-Pool to a three consecutive top-four finishes at European Championships with the highlight being the bronze medal in Stuttgart, Heidenheim and Neuenburg this summer.
