The German Baseball and Softball Federation (DBV) announced the roster for the 2011 IBAF Baseball World Cup on Friday. Head coach Greg Frady will take 24 players to Panama from October 1 to 15. The roster includes also professional ball players Martin Dewald, Kai Gronauer, Max Kepler-Rozycki, Donald Lutz and Markus Solbach. Other key players are former minor leaguers Michael Franke, Rodney Gessmann, Ludwig Glaser, Tim Henkenjohann and Simon Guehring.
The sixth current pro, Jennell Hudson of the Boston Red Sox, is not aboard after playing his first season following Tommy John surgery. Enorbel Marquez-Ramirez of Telemarket Rimini is also missing due to an injury. A surprise addition is the 17-year-old Daniel Thieben of the Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg. Invited to the MLB European Academy he only played in the second division in Germany this year.
Germany will face Cuba, South Korea, Australia, Venezuela, Italy, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua in Group B. The coaching staff will be completed by Dirk Fries, Nick Hogan and Troy Williams.
