The Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg won game one of the German finals on Saturday by a score of 2-0 against the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe. In one of the best pitching performances in a final game in German Baseball history Philipp Hoffschild (W 3-0) allowed just two hits by Johannes Schaeffler and faced the minimum of 27 batters to lead Regensburg to the shutout.

At the plate Petr Cech set the tone, going 4-for-4 with a run in the third and a RBI in the seventh. Klaus Hopfensperger drove him in for the 1-0 lead. Matt Vance scored the second run of the game. Markus Winkler (L 3-1) issued nine hits, two runs and four walks in seven innings to take the loss.

Rodney Gessmann robs Andy Janzen of two-run homerun in the firstAfter blowing a 6-1 lead in the last three frames, the Buchbinder Legionaere won game two by a score of 7-6 anyway, needing just one more victory to clinch a second national title in Germany. A throwing error by third baseman Andy Janzen in the bottom of the ninth after groundball by Klaus Hopfensperger allowed Matt Vance to score the winning run from second. Moments earlier Michael Weigl, who had played for Regensburg until this winter, had tied the contest with a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth.

After trailing 1-6, the Heidekoepfe got back into the game in the top of the seventh, when they plated four runs on a sac fly by Sam Whitehead, a two-run hit by Robert Gruber and a bases loaded walk. Hopfensperger (REG) and Matt Pali (HEI) had hit homeruns earlier in the game. Janzen had missed a two-run shot in the opening period, when Rodney Gessmann leaped and caught the flyball at the center field fence, which otherwise would have left the ballpark. Gessmann (W 1-0) also received the win in relief. Whitehead (L 0-1) took the loss. Starting pitchers Eric Faint (REG) and Dusty Bergman (HEI) picked up no-decisions.
