Future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux retires from Active Career

On Monday Greg Maddux announced his retirement from Major League Baseball in a press conference at the Bellagio Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. The Baseball industry is currently gathering in Sin City for the annual Winter Meetings. Maddux was born on April 14th 1966 in St. Angelo, Texas and lived for parts of his childhood in Madrid, Spain, as his father served in the US Air Force. He later attended Valley High School in Las Vegas. He didn’t begin pitching before being 15 years old. The right-hander was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the second round of the 1984 amateur draft and debuted in the big leagues in September 1986.

During his 23-year-long career in the MLB, Maddux pitched for the Cubs, Braves, Dodgers and Padres. He finished with 355 wins, 227 losses and an ERA of 3.16 and 3371 strikeouts in 744 games. He won four straight Cy Young Awards from 1992 to 1995 and was ranked in the top five, five more times. He was invited to the all-star squad in eight years and won the World Series title with Atlanta in 1995. He won at least 13 games in a season between 1988 and 2007. He is ranked eighth in the all-time wins list, tenth in strikeouts and fourth in games started. He received a record 18 gold gloves for his excellent fielding abilities.

His brother Mike also pitched in the Major Leagues and recently signed a contract with the Texas Rangers to work as the pitching coach. Greg Maddux also considers returning as a coach in the future. He currently lives in the Las Vegas area with his wife Kathy and two children, Amanda “Paige” and “Satchel” Chase.

The clip shows Maddux talking about making pitches in an older interview, when he was still with the Atlanta Braves.
