All current major or minor league players developed in European baseball are listed here. There are now 3 players added missing in the 15th April edition (thank you readers), and the deletion of Tom de Blok, who came home before appearing in a game. Highlights include Donald Lutz just missing the cycle as the Baseball America Hitter of the Day on 21 April, lowlights being yesterday’s news that Roger Bernadina was designated for assignment by Cincinnati.
MLB-
Roger Bernadina, Cincinnati Reds. Netherlands.
Current team: Cincinnati Reds.
Bernadina is in limbo after being designated for assignment on Saturday. He could clear waivers and end up in the minor leagues, or he could be selected by another team. Watch this space. For the season, the Dutch left-handed outfielder has hit .143 in 35 plate appearances. He signed a minor league deal with the Reds this offseason, but played his way onto the roster in spring training.
Triple A-
Didi Gregorius, Arizona Diamondbacks. Netherlands.
Current team: Reno Aces (AAA)
Gregorius has cooled off after his hot start, hitting .222 over his last 10 games with a home run and a stolen base. He’s still hit a respectable .274/.352/.451 slashline on the season, with 2 games and five plate appearances for the struggling big league team.
Kai Gronauer, New York Mets. Germany.
Current Team: Las Vegas 51’s (AAA)
The Solingen native is back in triple-A with the Mets, and played in 6 games before returning to the disabled list. He has two walks and three strikeouts in 5 plate appearances.
Alex Liddi, Chicago White Sox. Italy.
Current team: Charlotte Knights (AAA)
The first baseman from San Remo has 2 homers in the last two weeks amongst only 6 hits. For the year he has 21 strikeouts against 2 walks for an on-base percentage of .186 through only 16 games.
Double A-
Donald Lutz, Cincinnati Reds. Germany.
Current team: Pensacola Blue Wahoos (AA)
Three days after the 5 hit game mentioned in the intro, Lutz had a 3 extra-base hit game. It appears he suffered a minor injury, as he didn’t play again for a week, and when he did return on May 2nd (going 2 for 2 with a walk in that game) he left the game early. Lutz is hitting .387 with 5 home runs and 15 RBI in 19 games.
Single A-
Federico Castagnini, Baltimore Orioles. Italy.
Current team: Delmarva Shorebirds (A)
The Verona native is sharing time at second base, and has 7 hits in 28 ABs since April 15th. He’s at .214/.313/.214 on the year with 4 runs scored.
Lars Huijer, Seattle Mariners. Netherlands.
Current team: Clinton LumberKings (A)
The righty has started to find his groove after a very successful season in 2013. Huijer has struck out 14 in his last two starts, covering 11 innings. He got the win while allowing one run on four hits May 2nd. For the season, Lars is 1-1 with a 3.70 ERA. He has 11 walks and 22 strikouts in 24.1 innings.
Max Kepler, Minnesota Twins. Germany.
Current team: Fort Myers Miracle (High-A)
Kepler has a triple, home run, and 2 stolen bases in the last week. He’s hitting .222 in 90 at bats with 12 R, 16 RBI, 9 walks and 10 strikeouts.
Dovydas Neverauskas, Pittsburgh Pirates. Lithuania.
Current team: West Virginia Power (A)
Neverauskas had a couple of rough outings after starting strong, but bounced back in his latest appearance with a 3 run, 5 inning no-decision. He’s 2-1 with a 5.32 ERA through 22 innings in West Virginia.
Andy Paz, Oakland Athletics. France.
Current team: Beloit Snappers (A)
Paz went a couple weeks without a hit, before getting on base in 3 of his last 4 games. The catcher is .105/.255/.105 through 46 plate appearances, with 8 walks, 13 strikeouts, and a stolen base.
Nick Urbanus, Texas Rangers. Netherlands.
Current team: Hickory Crawdads (A)
Urbanus has 2 hits the last two days, with a .186/.250/.254 slash through 19 games. The second baseman has 3 doubles in his last 10 games.
