The European Championship U21 in Trebic, Czech Republic continued with the third round of the preliminary phase on Thursday. The Ukraine, Russia and the hosts celebrated wins with leading the standings with a perfect 3-0 record.
Roman Boiko drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Ukraine to a 6-4 win over Slovakia in the morning game. They had tied the contest in the sixth. Dmytro Kiliyevich pitched three scoreless innings of strong relief to pick up the win. Juraj Janov took the loss.
In the afternoon Russia edged out Austria 2-1. They broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth, when Alexander Tarasov reached home on a RBI fielder’s choice to the catcher. Denis Leonov struck out eight in a complete game, allowing just six hits, a run and three walks. Felix Zimmerle got charged with the loss, surrendering two runs (1 ER) on five hits and four base on balls.
In the evening the Czech Republic crushed Lithuania 15-0 in six innings. Ten runs in the fourth and the fifth combined blew the score wide open. David Vohanka went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. Adam Hajtmar and Tomas Janoud had three RBI apiece. Svatoslav Kraut struck out five in two innings for the win. Eivinas Nagurka loss, surrendering 14 runs on 14 hits in four-plus innings.
