The European Championship U21 started on Tuesday in Trebic, Czech Republic with three games. Russia, Austria and the Czech Republic celebrated wins on day one.
Thanks to a seven-inning no-hitter by Nikita Lobanov Russia shut out Lithuania 11-0 in the first game of the tournament. He struck out 12 and issued just two walks in seven dominant frames. Russia took the lead in the third and blew it wide open with seven runs in the fourth. Aidas Steponavicius took the loss.
In game two of the day Austria defeated the Ukraine 10-5. The Austrian squad scored four runs in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie. Five runs in the seventh and eighth provided some insurance. Eight different players crossed the plate for runs. Michael Schneider gave up six hits, four runs (3 ER) and a walk in eight strong innings.
In the evening game the Czech Republic blew by Slovakia 13-0 in seven innings. They scored in six of the seven frames played in the contest. Filip Smola and Jakub Ondracek scored three runs apiece. Adam Hajtmar went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. On the mound Matej Brabec allowed only two hits in five otherwise perfect innings en route to the win.
