Italy defended its title at the European Championship Juniors in Bonn, Germany with a 4-3 win in the championship game over the Netherlands. Nicolo Loardi drove in the winning run with a double in the eighth. The Dutch team had tied the game in the top of the sixth with a sac fly by Roy Seltenrijch. Nick Urbanus scored twice for the Netherlands. Filippo Crepaldi (ITA) issued five hits, two runs and three bb in four innings. Scott Ronnenbergh (NED) surrendered two hits, three runs and five walks in 1 1/3 innings. Loardi also picked up the win on the mound. Brian Eradus took the loss.
Bronze Medal Game:
Russia – France 0-11 (7)
France took third place in the Euro Juniors with an 11-0 shutout over 2007’s runner up Russia. Edison Garcia pitched seven brilliant innings, allowing just four hits and two walks. He struck out two. Guillaume Lafeuille went two-for-four with three runs scored and two RBI. Thomas Medina drove in three. Alexander Khudyakov had two of the four Russian hits. Pavel Talakin issued seven hits, six runs (5 ER) and a bb in three innings.
Classification Round:
Ukraine – Belgium 14-1 (7)
The Ukraine concluded the tournament with their first win on Sunday, a 14-1 romp over Belgium. They scored seven runs in the fifth to blow the game wide open. Kostyantyn Korolov got three RBI. Every player in the starting lineup scored at least one run, five of them twice. Dmytro Limarenko picked up the win after seven innings, nine hits, a run and a walk. He struck out seven. Edouard Vanheer gave up three hits, four runs and six bb in 2 2/3 innings.
Czech Republic – Slovakia 7-3
The Czech team finished the Euro Juniors with a 7-3 victory over Slovakia. Matej Sucha went two-for-three with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Arnost Dubovy also scored twice. Marek Cervenka got the win, conceding four hits, three runs (1 ER) and a walk in 5 2/3 innings. Stepan Havlicek closed it out with 3 1/3 innings of no-hit relief. Jakub Okasa surrendered twelve hits, seven runs and three bb in seven innings to take the loss.
