The third day of the preliminary round was played on Wednesday at the European Championship Juniors in Bonn, Germany. Italy, the Netherlands, France and Germany celebrated lopsided wins. Two more days are left in the first round.
Russia – Netherlands 3-10
The Dutch team got win number two in the tournament on Wednesday, beating Russia 10-3. Roy Seltenrijch went three-for-four with two runs scored and two RBI. Nick Urbanus also drove in two. Scott Ronnenbergh started and allowed two hits and five walks in 4 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out eight. Reginald Bomberg (W 1-0) received the win in relief. Boris Rusakov (L 0-1) issued four hits, four runs and a bb in 2 1/3 innings.
France – Spain 7-0
Quentin Becquey (W 1-0) of the ROUEN HUSKIES, allowed four hits and six walks in seven-plus innings, but held Spain scoreless to lead France to a 7-0 shutout. He threw 101 pitches, but didn’t strike out a single batter. Simon Vicente collected two RBI. Maxime Charlot got three hits. Victor Velazquez (L 0-1) surrendered three hits, two runs and six walks in three innings.
Italy – Czech Republic 10-1
Italy demonstrated its will to defend the title at the European Championship Juniors with a lopsided 10-1 win over the Czech Republic. Luca Martone, Milvio Andreozzi, Giacomo Meriggi and Federico Castagnini combined to score nine of the ten runs. Giuseppe Sellaroli collected three RBI. Nicolo Loardi (ITA) began and issued three hits, a run and five bb in four innings. Filippo Crepaldi (W 1-0) picked up the win. Marek Cervenka (L 0-1) gave up nine hits and seven runs (3 ER) in 4 2/3 innings.
Germany – Slovakia 13-3 (7)
The German team improved to 2-1 in the tournament, defeating Slovakia 13-3 in seven innings. Seven runs in the seventh ended the contest early due to ten-run rule. Slovakia had won the first two games of the Juniors. Max Schmitz and Christoph Ziegler each scored three runs out of the first two spots in the batting order. Michael Croft drove in three. Markus Solbach (W 1-0) of the PULHEIM GOPHERS got the start and allowed three hits, three runs (2 ER) and three bb in 5 2/3 innings. Michal Noga (L 0-1) was responsible for two runs on five bb and was replaced after just 1 1/3 innings.
