The MARLINS eliminated EL LLANO from the championship race with a sweep last weekend. The team from Gijon is now five games behind the leader and reigning title holder with four games to play for them.

In the first match EL LLANO took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on Javier Flores’ solo homerun. But it was not enough. PUERTO CRUZ overcame the deficit in the sixth. Juan Carlos Macias evened the score, when third baseman Roberto Noriega threw the ball away and Macias raced home from third. Richard Montiel followed with a RBI single to seal the 2-1 victory. Leslie Nacar (W 7-1) struck out nine in eight sharp innings. He allowed just one run on three hits. Elvis Polanco (L 4-3) also was eight periods on the mound, giving up two unearned runs on eight hits.

In the second game, the MARLINS got off to a great start by scoring four runs in the first three frames for a 4-1 lead. They doubled up their run total till the end of the seventh and were on their way to an easy victory. The EL LLANO offense got things interesting in the eighth, when they rallied for four runs, though it was too little too late. Richard Montiel and Ricardo Rodriguez combined for two homeruns and five RBI. Daniel Martinez scored three times. Roberto Noriega had three hits for the guest squad. Javier Flores drove in two. Ivan Granados (W 10-1) gave up six hits, five runs and five walks in seven-plus innings, while striking out seven.  Ariel Ledesma (L 3-2) was charged with ten hits, eight runs (7 ER) and a walk in six-plus innings.
