Eddie Martinez joins Bad Homburg Hornets

The 36-year-old shortstop Eddie Martinez will continue to be a Hornet, but will stay in the German Baseball-Bundesliga. He is leaving the Saarlouis Hornets to join the Bad Homburg Hornets. Saarlouis decided to withdraw from the first division in German Baseball due to financial reasons following the 2010 season. Bad Homburg on the other hand got promoted.

Martinez was born in the Dominican Republic, but is playing in Germany since 1998 when he joined the Mainz Athletics. After eight years with the A’s he moved on to the Hornets. He has a career batting average of .377 (OBP .480/SLG .621) with 53 homeruns, 396 runs and 288 RBI in 364 games in the Baseball-Bundesliga.

In 2010 Martinez batted .358 (OBP .418/SLG .550) with four homeruns, a triple, seven doubles, 25 runs and 19 RBI in 26 games. In July he joined the German national team during the European Championship and went 7-for-27 with three homeruns, five runs and six RBI in eight games. He also was on the preliminary roster for the 2009 Baseball World Cup, but didn’t make the cut for the final roster.
