After a brilliant pitching performance by both teams, NETTUNO celebrated their second win at the European Champions Cup Final Four in two years after a 1-0 shutout against league-rival BOLOGNA. Jeffrey Farnsworth struck out 14 batters in eight-plus scoreless innings to lead DANESI to the triumph. He gave up just five hits and two walks.
The only difference between the two Italian Baseball League clubs was a run by Giuseppe Mazzanti in the second frame. He had reached with a leadoff walk and later was picked off, but catcher Matthew Stocco threw the ball away and Mazzanti advanced to third. He then scored on a single by Manuel Gasparri.
DANESI later had a few opportunities to extend the lead, but failed to give their pitching some insurance. In the ninth BOLOGNA threatened to come back, when Stocco chased Farnsworth with a leadoff double. But Carlos Pezzullo came in and closed it out.
Yulman Ribeiro got the start for FORTITUDO and gave up just one unearned run on three hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings. Fabio Milano and Victor Moreno relieved him for the last 3 2/3 innings.
The final between NETTUNO and BOLOGNA will be shown on Eurosport2 at a tape-delayed basis on Monday, June 22 at 8.15pm CET. CORENDON KINHEIM had beaten L&D AMSTERDAM on a tenth-inning homerun by Danny Rombley on Sunday morning to finish third at the Final Four.
