T&A San Marino – Bern Cardinals 5-2
T&A San Marino stays in the race for the final at the European Cup in Regensburg. They defeated the Bern Cardinals 5-2 on Saturday morning, improving to 3-2. After a pair of scoreless frames to kick off the contest it was a RBI fielder’s choice of Wuillians Vasquez in the bottom of the third, which gave the Titans a 1-0 lead.
One inning later the Titans scored three runs on RBI singles by Simone Albanese and Seth La Fera, as well as a sac fly by Giovanni Pantaleoni. A RBI single by Francesco Imperiali in the fifth made it 5-0.
The Cardinals, which will remain winless in the tournament, were at least able to avoid the shutout. A RBI single by Johnny Perigo in the sixth and a bases loaded walk by Mirco Bussmann plated both runs. Albert Marsnik flied out to end the biggest threat for San Marino following Bussmann’s two-out base on balls.
Luca Martignoni gave up nine hits and two runs (1 ER) in 7 2/3 innings. Leonardo D’Amico closed it out for the save. Patrick Lawson got charged with his third loss of the week, issuing 11 hits, five runs and three walks in seven frames.
San Marino now has to await the remaining results of the day to know their fate. For Bern meanwhile the tournament is over, concluding the first ever Swiss European Cup adventure with a 0-5 record. They will get the chance to defend the Swiss A-Pool spot at a Playoff tournament in September.
