Host DANESI NETTUNO got off to a good start into the 2009 European Cup. Behind a strong pitching performance and well-placed hits they defeated the German team BUCHBINDER LEGIONAERE with 6-1 on Tuesday evening at Steno Borghese.
NETTUNO started with a run in the top of the first, when Igor Schiavetti reached with a single and came around to score on a pair of throwing errors by starting pitcher Eddie Aucoin (L 0-1). It was the only time, the Italian club came through against the American hurler, who held them in check for five innings, allowing just this one unearned run on three hits, striking out three.
After having reached his pitch count, Aucoin was replaced on the mound and DANESI was able to score again, adding five insurance runs from the sixth to the ninth, through RBI singles by Manuel Gasparri (twice), Schiavetti, Andrea Castri and Manny Alexander.
REGENSBURG had reduced the deficit to a run in the bottom of the sixth, when Michael Weigl drove in Klaus Hopfensperger from third, but the bullpen with Martin Almstetter, Rodney Gessmann and Jonathan Eisenhuth couldn’t hold the zeros. The LEGIONAERE offense had also some other opportunities to put runs on the board, but left the bases loaded in the second and two men on in the fourth and sixth.
Carlos Richetti (W 1-0) had to pitch out of trouble a few times, giving up seven hits, one run and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six. Spanish National Team pitcher Remigio Leal (S 1) relieved him and shut the door with six strikeouts in the last 3 1/3 innings of one-hit ball.
REGENSBURG plays against the GREYS on Wednesday in Anzio, NETTUNO takes on the TENERIFE MARLINS, which were off today because of the postponement (rain) of their opening match against ROUEN. This game will be made up tomorrow morning in Nettuno.
