Former Boston Red Sox prospect Adam Blackley (W 1-0) and the bullpen of L&D AMSTERDAM silenced the bats of DANESI NETTUNO in a 4-0 victory on Thursday evening at the European Cup in Nettuno, capping a long day with five games.
The Australian southpaw Blackley gave up just three hits and three walks in seven scoreless innings, striking out six. He was replaced by Kenny Berkenbosch and Pim Walsma, who pitched two harmless innings of relief, sealing the four-hit shutout.
Maikel Benner provided the 1-0 lead with a RBI single in the third. The Dutch catcher also was responsible to drive in the next two runs of AMSTERDAM in the seventh. His single into left field, combined with an error by Igor Schiavetti brought home Pavel van Zaane and Zair Koeiman. Benner later scored too on a RBI single by Sidney de Jong.
NETTUNO, which played its second game in a few hours, looked flat and didn’t come back. Jeff Farnsworth (L 0-1) made his debut for the Italian club, striking out eight in six solid innings. He gave up four hits, a run and a walk. Carlos Perluzzo, who already pitched against the MARLINS in the afternoon, was responsible for the last three runs. Both clubs are now 2-1 with two games to go.
