CORENDON KINHEIM used a five-run third inning on their way to a 8-2 victory over T&A SAN MARINO and to the European Champions Cup Final Four in Barcelona, Spain (June 20/21). The Italian Baseball League champion of last year just had tied the contest in the bottom of the second, when the Dutch bats exploded for five runs and took the lead for good.
Dirk van’t Klooster led KINHEIM with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Tjerk Smeets and Kevin Weijgertse also drove in two each. Josh Renick scored three times. SAN MARINO’s Martin Vazquez homered in the third.
David Bergman (W 1-0) got the starting nod and allowed seven hits, two runs (1 ER) and a walk in six innings. He struck out six. Nick Veltkamp and Michiel van Kampen combined for three innings of one-hit relief. Matteo Tonellato (L 0-1) gave up six hits, eight runs (6 ER) and three bb in 3 2/3 innings for T&A. Relievers Luca Martignoni and Pedro Orta stopped the CORENDON offense, but their own batters weren’t able to reduce the deficit.
