Spain has won the bronze medal at the 2014 European Championship. The team of manager Mauro Mazzotti defeated France 10-5 on Saturday morning to clinch third place in the final standings, finishing the final round with a 3-2 record. France dropped to 1-4. Spain also had finished third in the 2012 event in Rotterdam.
After France took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a rare RBI triple by Rene Leveret, Spain plated ten runs against Nicolas Dubaut (0.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R) and Owen Ozanich (1.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 BB) until the end of the second. This was the ballgame. Oscar Angulo, who had four hits in the game, Jesus Golindano and Fernando Martinez collected two RBI apiece. Four players scored twice.
Spain failed to score more runs afterwards, mostly because of a series of base running mistakes. Meanwhile France was able to get back in the contest by scoring four runs combined in the fifth and the sixth. However Spain’s relievers Eduardo Morlan and Eric Gonzalez shut down the French offense in the last three innings, denying a comeback. Felix Brown scored twice for the team of Eric Gagne, who got ejected late in the game for arguing a call.
