Eight innings long dominated the 20-year-old MARLINS starter Audie Nunez (L 0-1) the GREYS offense. But in the ninth he first lost the strike zone and then the game. The PORT OF ANTWERP GREYS, which trailed since the first inning, scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 2-1, finishing fifth in the European Cup in Nettuno. TENERIFE dropped to sixth and is going to play against the Pool-B teams this summer.
Nunez, who struck out twelve in the first eight periods, hit two of the first three batters and walked the fourth intentionally to load the bases in the last frame with one out. He got the second out with another K against Giovanni Vanthillo, before forcing home the tying run with walk versus David Herssens. Next up was 17-year-old Nick Vanthillo, who smacked a 0-1 pitch into left center field for a RBI single, delivering the decisive walk-off hit.
The MARLINS had scored their lone run in the first on a RBI groundout by Daniel Martinez. Nunez finished with a line of 8.2 innings pitched, three hits, two runs, three walks, 14 strikeouts and two hit batters. On the other side, Daniel Howard started for the GREYS and gave up three hits, a run and two bb in five innings. Dennis van Hoof (W 1-0) received the win for four innings of scoreless relief.
