Italy set a statement in the beginning of the winners round robin at the European Championship in Hoofddorp on Thursday afternoon. They shut out Germany 12-0 in nine innings. They scored three runs in the second, three in the seventh and six in the ninth. Italy improved to 2-1 in the final round, while Germany dropped to 1-2.
Junior Oberto led the way for the Squadra Azzurri with a complete game shutout. The southpaw of T&A San Marino conceded only four hits and a walk in nine scoreless innings. He needed just 113 pitches for the nine innings.
At the plate Italy took a 3-0 lead in the second thanks to an error by Simon Guehring and a two-run single by Sebastiano Poma. Los Angeles Dodgers minor leaguer Sven Schueller relieved Germany’s starter Andre Hughes with two runners on and one out and stopped the rally by inducing a double play. He then went on to pitch three scoreless innings to keep Germany in the game.
However their offense wasn’t capable of initiating a rally. Italy on the other hand tagged on nine more runs in the seventh and ninth combined against Jonathan Eisenhuth and Kevin Trisl. Alessandro Vaglio and Giuseppe Mazzanti joined Poma with two RBI. Jairo Ramos, Stefano Desimoni and Erick Epifano scored twice. Eric Brenk had two hits for Germany.
