Dutch Softball: Tex Town Tigers in Finals, wait for Opponent



Regular season winner TEX TOWN TIGERS swept their semi-finals series versus the TWINS 3-0 and reached the Holland Series in the Dutch Softball Hoofdklasse. Now they have to wait for their opponent. 2007 champion TERRASVOGELS won the first two games of their series against SPARKS HAARLEM, before losing on Sunday, and needs just one more win next weekend to advance into the finals.

The TIGERS beat the TWINS 3-2 last Friday in game one of the semi-final series. Britt Vonk singled in the winning run in the fifth. The guest squad had evened the score an inning before on RBI doubles by Debby Connor and Daisy De Peinder. TEX TOWN had taken a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run homerun by Virginie Anneveld. Lindsey Meadows struck out six in a complete game victory. Keli Harrell took the loss.

The second match of the series was a thriller on Saturday afternoon. Both teams scored late in regulation with the TWINS tying the game on a throwing error by Lindsey Meadows, who had homered a frame before. The match went into overtime with each team scoring in the next four half-innings. TEX TOWN again scored in the top of the tenth, when Eva De Bruin reached home on an error. The TWINS failed to come back another time in the bottom of the frame and lost 4-5. Meadows struck out 14, ten in the first six frames, in a complete game win. She allowed four runs (1 ER) on six hits and a walk. Andee Lindgren started for the TWINS and gave up six hits, three runs (2 ER) and a base on balls in eight innings. Keli Harrell took the loss.

The TIGERS completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory on Sunday. They overcame an early 0-2-deficit by scoring all six runs between the fourth and sixth period. Lindsey Meadows continued her MVP bid by going deep for a second time in two days, bringing a 4-2 lead in the fifth. She also picked up her third win on the mound, allowing only two unearned runs on seven hits in seven innings. She struck out seven. Debby Connor and Fabienne Van Uden had scored for the TWINS. Keli Harrell lost her rhythm in the fourth and lost for the third time in three days.

TERRASVOGELS opened the semi-finals round with a 6-0 shutout against HAARLEM. Kirsten Scheele allowed just five hits and two bb in seven innings, while striking out eight. The offense provided her with an early cushion, as they scored four times in the first two frames. Eight batters had at least a hit, six scored for the home team. Rebecca Soumeru gave up eleven hits, six runs and five walks in a complete game loss. She also threw three wild pitches.

The second match was not that easy for the defending champion. Each team scored twice in the seventh and eighth periods, before TERRASVOGELS finally prevailed in the ninth and won 5-4 for a 2-0 lead. Linda Hoenderdos drove in the winning run with a RBI double. SPARKS had no answers left afterwards. Nina Van Huissteden (TER) went two-for-four with two RBIs. Dagmar Bloeming started for the guests. She allowed ten hits, four runs (1 ER) and two bb in 7 2/3 innings, striking out eight. Blake Hoorelbeke received the win for 1 1/3 solid innings of relief. Judith Van Kampen was charged with five runs (3 ER) on seven hits and three walks in nine innings to take the loss.

SPARKS avoided a sweep in the semi-finals and force at least a game four with a 3-2 ten-inning victory on Sunday. The game went to extra inning with the score tied at 1-1. Each team scored once in the ninth, before HAARLEM came through in the tenth with a RBI single by Noemi Boekel to seal the win. TERRASVOGELS tried to counter in the bottom of the frame, but failed to bring a runner in from third base. Judith Van Kampen struck out just one in ten innings, but picked up the win nonetheless. She allowed just four hits, two unearned runs and four bb. Kirsten Scheele pitched seven solid innings in her start for TERRASVOGELS. Reliever Blake Hoorelbeke replaced her in extras and took the loss.
