DEVILS SURPRISE INDIANS, MANAGE SPLIT 14-4, 4-9
In the surprise of the weekend, the promoted DEVILS cooled the hot bats of the INDIANS,
behind Roger Salvodelli’s gem. The DEVILS are showing the league that they are the giant
killers this year. This win coupled with the opening weekend defeat of the FLYERS, should
have the upper tier of the league worried to play the team from Wil. Nicolas Jaquemet of
the INDIANS had this to say, “We were too nervous and not patient enough at the plate to obtain our fifth consecutive win (after 3 in championship and 1 in the Swiss Cup). The three weeks without competition didn’t help us to be prepared and focused. We also have to admit, the well organized DEVILS team and great pitching by Savoldelli also were key points in this game.”
Game two saw the INDIANS offense wake up a little…securing a 9-4 victory, behind two three-run homeruns in the fifth inning, Rafaelito Jimenez and Gabriel Valero hitting the big flies! INDIANS starter Matthew White got his first win after throwing four scoreless innings.
CHALLENGERS DOMINATE FROGS IN ZURICH, 10-4, 9-1
After four hours of hard labor to get the Herenschuli ready, the ZURICH CHALLENGERS and SISSACH FROGS got the doubleheader going. In game one it was a battle between two national team players. Thomas Burger for the CHALLENGERS and Christian Klarer for the FROGS. It was Tomas Burger who came out on top, as he pitched seven strong innings and prevailed 10-4. Thomas Landis pitched the final two innings to close it out for the CHALLENGERS. On the offensive side Chris Palatinus broke out of a season long slump with four hits and two RBIs, and Jesus Martinez had a big two-run homerun and a double.
In game two player/coach Andy Fleischacker had to take the mound for his second career Swiss start. He matched up with national team pitcher Danny Traina. Once again the CHALLENGERS got solid pitching as Fleischacker picked up his first win with five innings of well pitched baseball. Fleischacker walked none, striking out two. Traina did not have his best stuff and was banged around by the CHALLENGERS pretty well and took the 9-1 loss. The CHALLENGERS offense was led by Saentis Zeller and Patrick Zollig, each
accounting for three of the team’s hits. Leading the way in completing the sweep for the home club. For the FROGS Christian Klarer had a great game, three hits, including a solo homerun and a double. The CHALLENGERS improve to 5-5 and find themselves back in the playoff hunt, while the FROGS drop to 1-5.
FLYERS FLEX MUSCLES, DEFEAT BARRACUDAS 13-6
The weekend began with a battle of two playoff contenders when the FLYERS from Therwil, (1-1), traveled to Zurich to battle with the BARRACUDAS, (4-2). Stefan Koller, (1-0, .78 ERA) took the hill for the FLYERS, facing off against Jeff Mottl, (1-1, 2.40 ERA). It turned out to be Kollers’ day, and not Mottl’s, Jeff would be out of the game in the third inning, surrendering nine early runs,(8 ER), on ten hits. Koller would cruise until the sixth, where he ran into trouble, allowing the ‘CUDAS to put up a three spot, cutting into a big 12-1 lead. The BARRACUDAS would continue to fight, putting up two runs in the ninth, and loading the bases, but to no avail, as Reto Siegel was summoned to replace Koller, and put out the fire. Siegel would do just that, striking out the last two hitters of the game, finishing off an impressive 13-6 win! Koller, Siegel, Cuevas each had three hits for the FLYERS. Brown and Schnider had two hits for ZURICH. Schroeder hit a homerun. Koller received the win, Mottl the loss.
The 2nd half of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain…
