The Italian Baseball League club T&A San Marino has to make a change in the pitching staff a few weeks before the start of the 2011 season. Due to personal reasons Rene Cortez won’t join the team. He will be replaced by 38-year-old Venezuelan right-hander Darwin Cubillan. Signed by the New York Yankees in 1993 he pitched in 56 Major League games between 2000 and 2004 for the Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos and Baltimore Orioles. He had an ERA of 6.85 with 54 strikeouts and 44 walks in 69 2/3 innings. After his release following the 2004 season he played in Japan for the Hanshin Tigers from 2005 to 2007. In the past three seasons Cubillan took the mound for teams in the Mexican League. He is scheduled to arrive in San Marino on March 30 among the other Venezuelan players on the Titans roster.
