Corendon Kinheim defeated in Pim Mulier Stadion

by Pim van Nes

European and Netherlands champion club 2007, but defeated today by European and Netherlands Cup winner: 3-7. In the Pim Mulier Stadion of Haarlem, CORENDON KINHEIM took an early 2-0 lead on starting pitcher Leon Boyd. However, this Dutch Canadian turned out to be the winning pitcher, when the first relief pitcher for KINHEIM conceded two runs by inherited Neptunians and one run earned on himself at one out away from the eighth inning. Also KINHEIM‘s second reliever could not stop the Rotterdam batters, who take the first victory home for the other two games of the series.

Best performance on the KINHEIM mound came from David Bergman, who once leading 2-0 went into three almost perfect innings walking just one. At two fast outs in the seventh inning, two Neptunus runners on and still leading 2-0, Bergman was relieved after 91 pitches, but substitute Duko Jansen immediately offered two extra bases and then gave up a single to Lennart Koster: 2-3 for NEPTUNUS. The visitors took the distance in the eighth with a single by Andy Leer (2-4), a double by Jeroen Sluijter (2-5) and a homerun by Eugene Kingsale (2-7). The KINHEIM reaction in the bottom of the eighth loaded the bases with Dirk van’t Klooster, Tjerk Smeets and Bryan Engelhardt, but the result was one run only: 3-7 final score.

Winning pitcher Leon Boyd struck out five, walked two and gave up six hits during his seven innings. The NEPTUNUS lead was defended well by relievers Jurjen van Zijl and Berry van Driel.
