The contract of the 24-year-old ran out at the end of the 2009 season after his seventh year in professional baseball. He had signed with the Minnesota Twins organization in 2002 for a European record bonus of $800,000 and was claimed off waivers by the Reds in 2007. In his career Smit has a 33-31 record with an ERA of 3.43 and 621 strikeouts (270 walks) in 559 2/3 innings.
