Chinese Taipei ties Team USA in pool A with shutout over Panama
Host Chinese Taipei clinched a quarterfinals berth with a 10-0 win over Panama. They are now tied with the USA for the lead in pool A with a 5-1 record. They will face each other tomorrow.
Taiwan scored their first run in the second on a RBI-single by Kuo-Hui LO. They added two more through RBI-singles by Chen-Min PENG (3-5, 3 RBI) in the third and fifth period. Taipei ran up the advantage to 8-0 in the sixth, using five runs on RBI-singles by Ying-Chien LIAO and Chih-Song LIN in addition to two costly errors by the Panamanian catcher Nelson ROBLEDO. Two more runs in the final two frames sealed the 10-0 shutout.
Chien-Fu YANG (W 2-0) pitched six innings for the win. He allowed just three hits and struck out four.
Alberto ACOSTA (L 0-1) was charged with three hits, two runs (1 ER) and two walks in four innings. He got five strikeouts.
