The Swiss Senior National team will be hosting a tournament at the 2 year old ballpark in Zurich, on the weekend of August 3-5. This will be a 4-team tournament with a 4-game guarantee unless poor weather changes the format. This tournament is open to any senior national team, and the first 3 teams to subscribe will be let in the tournament.

There is no entry fee and teams will not have to bring an umpire unless they choose too. All that is required for each team is to bring 2 boxes of baseballs. This will be the first major senior level tournament held at the Zurich ballpark, so great crowds and great baseball is expected.

Teams interested in subscribing should email Swiss national head coach Andy Fleischacker at ajf1070@aol.com Once again this is open to all senior national teams A Pool or B Pool and could be a great way for some A Pool countries to prepare for the Senior European Championship.

The Bern Cardinals fought off a valiant late game effort by the Therwil Flyers to capture their 6th Swiss championship in the last seven years, by a score of 10-5! The Cards got off to a fast start, thanks to a 3-run homer from Cards catcher Seth Suplin in the first inning. A crisp lead off single from Samuel Paulino, and a walk from Vitus Huber set the table for the American backstop. Hide Oshima, the Flyers starting pitcher wasn’t able to get out of the third inning, after surrending two more runs before exiting, leaving his team in a 5-0 hole.

On the other side, Edy Villacis had the Flyers hitters guessing through five innings of work, allowing only three hits, with the lone run coming on a Chris Blackbee homerun. With the score at 5-1, John Baum took the hill in relief, hoping to hold the lead for his team, and bring back another title to Bern. Unfortunately, his effort was matched by strong Flyer hitters. The first pitch he threw resulted in a JB Tucker homerun. Another run would follow in the sixth inning, but Baum would elude more trouble as he left the bases full after a strikeout, and groundout ended the threat.

Baum once again ran into trouble in the seventh inning, surrendering two more runs, along with his teams lead, leaving the game tied 5-5 coming to the bottom half of the innning. Chris Blackbee had taken over on the hill in the third, and left the Cardinal offense off the board through the sixth inning. But that would come to a quick end, as a lead off walk, along with a walk to the next hitter left runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs.

Jhonny Perigos followed the walks with a crisp, RBI single to left, giving the Cards the lead back at 6-5. The next hitter, game MVP Seth Suplin, who had connected earlier for a 3-run jack, would double up his efforts with another, NO DOUBT, game changing 3-run homerun! After scrapping together another run, the home team took the field in the 8th inning with a 10-5 lead.

Baum and his defense kept the Flyers at bay in the 8th, highlighted by a spectacular play at 2nd base by Raphael Hanzi ended the inning. In the 9th, the Cards were able to get two quick outs, leaving them one away from yet another title. But a Daniel Eichenberger single, followed by a walk made things interesting…before a weak ground ball to shortstop Samuel Paulino ended the game, and the 2011 Swiss baseball season! The Cardinals dynasty over the last decade continued with the clubs 7th overall title, and 6th in the last seven years.

Game one of the Swiss finals was a very intense back and forth battle between the Therwil Flyers and the Bern Cardinals. The Therwil Flyers starting pitcher, Lukas Croton, came out ready for the big day. Croton struck out the first four batters that he faced, and only gave up six hits in six strong innings of work. The Flyers struck first, when catcher JB Tucker hit a two run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Unfortunately for the Flyers, the Cardinals battled back and scored four runs in the third inning to take the lead 4-2. The Flyers knotted the score in the bottom half of the fourth inning by scoring two runs on 3 doubles. Starting the fourth inning off, Stefan Koller doubled, then scored on a rbi ground out, then the Flyers second baseman, Adrian Kaufmann doubled and came around to score on a Sebastian Zwyer double. With the score tied going into the bottom half of the seventh inning, the Flyers took the lead on a 2 rbi single from Daniel Eichenberger. This lead was not safe, as the Cardinals inched within one run in the top of the eighth, scoring on consecutive two out doubles from Seth Suplin and Eduardo Villacis. The Flyers answered in a big way in the bottom of the eighth scoring nine runs on eight hits, two of which were home runs from Reto Siegel and Stefan Koller. The Flyers did not give up a run in the ninth and won the game 15-5. Hitting standouts for the Flyers were Hide Oshima, who was 2-3 and Stefan Koller who was 3-5 with a home run.

Game two of the Swiss finals was far less exciting than game one. The Bern Cardinals, down one game to zero, came ready to play. They scored nine runs in the first three innings to jump out to a huge lead 9-0. In the first three innings, the Cardinals pounded out eight hits and took advantage of four Flyers errors. This lead was too much for the Flyers, as starting pitcher Eduardo Villacis pitched six innings, giving up only four hits and one run. The Flyers kept fighting back, unfortunately the huge lead that was given up early in the game was insurmountable. The Flyers were only able to score 3 runs, two of which came in the ninth inning. Offensively for the Flyers, Stefan Koller put together a very nice game going 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Final score of game two was 11-3 in favor of the Cardinals.

With the Therwil Flyers leading the best of five series, two games to zero, the Zurich Barracudas were faced with a very difficult challenge. Not only were the Barracudas in a must win game, but they had Flyers starting pitcher, and team ERA leader, Lukas Croton standing in their way. Unfortunately for the Barracudas, Croton did what he has been doing all season, and that is shutting down opposing hitters. Croton pitched a flawless five innings, giving up zero runs on zero hits. This was enough for the Flyers offense to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. In the second inning the Flyers were able to score after Sebastian Zwyer doubled and came home to score on a Hide Oshima single. After singling, Oshima was able to come around and score on a Reto Siegel double. Then in the fifth inning, after a Taka Oshima walk and a Ianis Bouteloup double, the Flyers scored two more with a 2 run single from Adrian Kaufmann. Leading four to zero, the Flyers mad a pitching change, and the Barracudas were able to put up 3 runs in the sixth inning to cut down their deficit to one run. The Flyers answered by scoring two more in the bottom half of the sixth inning. In the seventh and eighth innings, Hide Oshima settled in and did not give up any more runs. Closing the game out for the Flyers was Adrian Kaufmann with a perfect ninth inning. Hitting standouts for the game were Reto Siegel who was 3-4, Taka Oshima who was 2-3 and Ianis Bouteloup who finished 2-5. Final score was 8-3 in favor of the Flyers. With this win, the Flyers eliminated the Barracudas and move on to the finals. The Flyers have a rematch with last years Swiss Champions, Bern Cardinals.

Playoff game number one between the Therwil Flyers and the Zurich Barracudas was a back and forth battle that was intense all the way to the finish. The Flyers got off to a rough start defensively, giving up seven runs in the first two innings, off of four errors and a home run. Flyers starter Lukas Croton pitched very well for 4.1 innings, but unfortunately his defense made extra work for him, which shortened his outing. Fortunately for the Flyers, their playoff jitters wore off by the 4th inning and reliever Stefan Koller took advantage of that. He threw the remaining 4.2 innings only yielding two hits and no runs. After trailing 7-1, the Flyers offense never gave up. They were able to push one more run across in the third and another in the fifth. One of these runs coming off of an amazing straight steal of home, by Flyers’ center fielder Reto Siegel. As the Flyers kept chipping away at the lead, the Flyers defense came to life. Facing the hottest hitter in the Barracudas lineup with the bases loaded and one out, pitcher Stefan Koller was able to induce a double play ground ball to end the inning without surrendering a run. Trailing 7-3 in the eighth inning, the Flyers were able to take advantage of some Barracudas miscues, and score 5 runs to take the lead. Offensively, the bottom of the Flyers batting order really came through in the clutch. Adrian Kaufmann and Sebastian Zwyer were able to string together two consecutive singles to put the Flyers up for good. Offensive standouts for the Flyers were Sebastian Zwyer and Chris Blackbee who both finished the game 2-4. Final score was 10-7 in favor of the Flyers.

Game two of the playoff series featured two of the top pitchers in the league. Hide Oshima for the Flyers and Kody Hightower for the Barracudas battled it out on a hot Sunday afternoon. Hide Oshima pitched an excellent game, giving up zero runs in seven innings of work and striking out 7. On the other side of the ball, Kody Hightower kept his team in the game by only giving up 3 runs in seven innings. The Flyers were able to score their first run of the day after Reto Siegel reached on an error, and then came around to score on a RBI double by Chris Blackbee. To increase the lead, in the seventh inning Reto Siegel knocked in two more runs with a 2 out 2 RBI double. The way the Flyers had been pitching, this lead should have been safe. Unfortunately for the Flyers, relief pitcher JB Tucker was unable to keep the Barracudas off the board. After two quick outs followed by an error, the Barracudas strung together 4 straight hits to regain the lead. Trailing by one run in the eighth inning, the first batter of the inning, Chris Blackbee, singled and then was able to steal second and third. With the tying run on third base, catcher Emanuel Raouzeos was able to line a single to left field to tie the game. Following his single, Rauozeos was able to steal second and advance to third on a fielding error. With the go ahead run at third base, Sebastian Zwyer laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to put the Flyers up by one run. Although the Flyers had the lead, their offense did not stop. They were able to push three more runs across to increase their lead to 4. The Flyers had a quick one, two, three ninth inning to earn their second win, increasing their lead to 2-0 in a best of 5 series. Offensive standouts for the Flyers were Chris Blackbee who was 3-5 and Reto Siegel who was 1-4 with 4 RBI. Final score of the game was 8-4 in favor of the Flyers.

Therwil Flyers vs. Zurich Barracudas

Just 1 month ago this series would have looked like a no brainer and the flyers would be heavy favorites to sweep the Cudas in 3 games. But a lot has changed in 1 month. Daniel Eichenberger has gotten hurt for the Flyers and has not played in 1 month so his big bat may be rusty. And the Barracudas have gotten very hot. They are coming off a big 2 game sweep off the Bern Cardinals and have been the hottest offensive team in the league. The bat of Nderim Coma has come alive this season and he has hit 13 homeruns including 3 vs. the Bern ardinals last weekend and if he keeps up this unprecedented home run barrage the Barracudas offense will keep marching on. Kody Hightower is the other big bat in the lineup and he brings a power and speed combination that will be hard to contain. Andi Ruesch has returned from school in Holland, and Chico Colandarus are 2 more potent offensive players. The wild card for the Barracudas offense may be Ryan Trask and Ian Young who play on Sundays only due to work obligations, with these 2 British national team players the Barracudas lineup is strong and deep. On the mound for the Cudas it’s a 3 month show. National team pitcher Frank Berchtold will start the Swiss pitching game and Nderim Coma will be the closer. In game 2 its all Hightower all the time, he will be counted on to go the distance. The fate of the Barracudas will lie with Berchtold if he gets hot on the mound trouble could be brewing for the flyers.

The Flyers where my pre season favorite and they lived up to the hype. Going 26-2 and dominating the Swiss baseball league in both offense and pitching. The flyers offense is a deep and strong lineup and was even able to overcome the loss of big hitter and national team player Daniel Eichenberger. The offense is lead by player/coach JB Tucker who has turned in another big year at the plate, and by center fielder Reto Siegel. The veteran Siegel has had another strong year at the plate out of the leadoff spot and is capable of beating you with his speed and with the long ball. Other hitters that will be counted on heavily in this deep and balanced offense will be Stefan Koller, Adi Kaufmann, and Chris Blackbee. If this lineup gets hot they will be hard to stop and with their pitching staff a ton of runs is not needed. The best part of the flyers is there pitching. Number 1 starter Lukas Croton has proved he can beat not only the Swiss teams but some of the best teams in Europe and had an outstanding performance in a loss to the Spanish national team in Barcelona. Croton is a strike throwing machine who when he is on its game over for the other team. A close number 2 on this team is lefty Hide Oshima. He gets better with every start and is not far behind Croton in terms of the best pitcher in Switzerland. The foreign pitcher game is well in hand as well with Aussi Chris Blackbee and American JB Tucker both being solid on the mound. The bullpen brings out Stefan Koller and Adi Kaufmann to more national team pitchers. With the strong offense and exceptional pitching the flyers will be hard to beat and with strong defensive players like Taka Oshima a spot in the finals should be had.

Prediction- this will be a hard fought series but the Flyers take it 3-1

Bern Cardinals vs. Embrach Mustangs

The second place Cardinals have had some rough patches including last weekend when the dropped 2 games vs. the Barracudas. But when this team is clicking watch out. The cards have arguably the most potent offense in the league. Led by Americans John Baum and Seth Suplin, Latinos Eduardo Vilacis and Sammy Paulino and Swiss hitters Johnny Perigos, Vitus Huber, Raphael Hanzi, and Tobias Imboden the Cards have the deepest 1-9 lineup in Swiss baseball. There are no holes in this offense with speed and power all the way up and down the lineup. The key as always will be john Baum he is the offense leader and the heart and soul of the team and when he is off his game the Cards usually are. On the mound the cards do has some problems. In game 1 all hope rely on national team starter Tobias Imboden, he has thrown 13 complete games this year and may be worn out. The Cards have no other solid Swiss pitchers and if Imboden is off the cards are in trouble. Game 2 is much stronger for the Cards. They have former major leaguer Eduardo Vilacis to start and veteran John Baum to relieve. This season Vilacis has not dominated the league like everyone thought he would and the real force on the bump has been Baum who has posted a sub 1.00 era to completely shut down the league.

The Mustangs come into the playoffs with 1 of if not the best season in club history. They are a confident club where the name of the game is small ball and speed. Pitching and defense are also the name of the game for the Mustangs and if either is off the offensive firepower is not there to compete in slugfests. On offense the mustangs are lead by Americans Josh Crouse and former Indy ball player Andrew Wong, as well as Canadian Casey Aurbech and Swiss hitter Harry Wischnewski and Bruno Albrecht. There team speed is unmatched in all of Swiss baseball but the only real long ball threat is Wong. If the table setters are not getting on the mustangs offense does not click. On the mound the rainbows are in the same shape as the cards in game 1. The only real solid arm they have is veteran national team pitcher Roger Salvodelli. He has 13 complete games and often come back in relief in game 2. The Mustangs have no other Swiss pitching so if Salvodelli does not have it the mustangs have no chance. In game 2 they have the combination of Andrew Wong and up and comer Kory Kovach. These 2 are average on the mound at this point and just don’t match up well with the cards game 2 arms.

Prediction- this series went to all 5 games last year but the cards have improved and if they are top of their game it won’t go 5 again. The Cards take this series also 3-1

The makeup game between the Therwil Flyers and the Embrach Mustangs consisted of offensive outbursts by both clubs. In the first three innings, the Flyers put up 10 runs, courtesy of 9 hits and 2 walks and 2 errors. Doing most of the damage was Flyers hitter, Reto Siegel, who was 3-3 with a home run. Even with this large lead to over come, the Mustangs offense did its best, scoring 2 runs in the 4th,5th,6th,and 7th innings. The majority of the offense came from Mustangs import player, Andrew Wong, who finished the game going 4-4 with 2 home runs. Fortunately for the Flyers, relief pitcher Adrian Kaufmann was able to close the game out with a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the Flyers’ 26th win of the season. Offensive standouts for the game were Reto Siegel who was 3-3 with a home run and Ianis Boutaloup who was 2-5 with 2 rbi and 4 runs scored. Final score was 14-10 in favor of the Flyers.

Game one of the Sunday double header between the Therwil Flyers and the Lucerne Eagles was a one sided affair. Flyers starting pitcher, Lukas Croton, over matched the Eagles hitters giving up two runs (all unearned) in four innings of work, while striking out five. The Flyers offense started producing runs from the first inning. In the top of the first, Reto Siegel hit a two run home run that put the Flyers in front, and they never looked back. The Flyers offense scored in each of the first four innings increasing their total to seven runs. Reliever Stefan Koller came in the game and pitched a solid four innings of relief. Unfortunately the Flyers defense had a several miscues to allow three more runs across the board. The Flyers then turned it up a notch and scored three runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and ninth. Adrian Kaufmann entered the game as the Flyers final reliever, and gave up on run but managed to hang on to the six run lead. Hitting standouts for the Flyers were Reto Siegel who was 3-4 with a home run and Adrian Kaufmann who was 2-5. Final score of the game was 12-6 in favor of the Flyers.

Game two was a lopsided game from the very beginning. The Flyers offense scored four runs in the first inning on four hits and three walks. Then, after starting pitcher Hide Oshima shut down the Eagles offense in the first inning, the Flyers continued their offensive onslaught scoring five runs in the second, two in the third, and five more in the fifth. Hide Oshima threw the ball very well and did not allow any runs in his three innings of work. On the offensive side, the Flyers scored two of their second inning runs on a Ianis Boutaloup home run to right center field. To add to the barrage of runs, in the fifth inning Emanuel Raouzeos tagged the Eagles for three more runs with a home run to right center field, making it the third home run on the day for the Flyers. Hitting standouts for the game were Sebastian Zwyer, who was 3-4 with a double, Ianis Boutaloup who was 3-4 with a home run and Stefan Koller who was 3-4. Final score of the game was 16-1 in favor of the Flyers.

Game one between the Therwil Flyers and the Zurich Challengers featured solid pitching and timely hitting for the Flyers. Lukas Croton, coming off of a very successful European Championship, continued his dominant pitching. He pitched 5 innings of one run baseball, not giving the Zurich Challengers much chance to develop any offense. After Croton’s 5 solid innings, Stefan Koller came in the game to pitch the final two frames giving up zero hits and striking out two. On the offensive side, the Flyers scratched out three runs in the first four innings, but then broke it open in the fifth inning, starting with a bases loaded 2 run double by Stefan Koller. The Flyers were able to push 3 runs across in the sixth and seventh to put them up 11 runs, which ended the game early due to the mercy rule. Hitting standouts for the game were Reto Siegel who was 2-5 and Chris Blackbee who was 1-2. Final score was 12-1 in favor of the Flyers.

Game two between the Flyers and Challengers was a much closer game. The Flyers jumped out to an early two run lead in the first inning after the first five batters safely reached base and two were brought in by singles from Chris Blackbee and Taka Oshima. After scoring two in the first, the Flyers were unable to notch any more until the fourth inning when Sebastian Zwyer drove in Adrian Kaufmann with a two strike double and then came home on Challengers fielding error. On the defensive side of the ball, starting pitcher Hide Oshima had a no hitter going through four innings. Oshima kept the Challengers off balance and was able to throw all of his pitches for strikes. Following Oshima was Chris Blackbee who gave up two runs in two innings. After the Flyers surrendered two runs, they were able to get them right back in the sixth inning with consecutive singles from Adrian Kaufmann and Sebastian Zwyer. They both came around to score on a sac fly and rbi single respectively. Hitting standouts for the game were Chris Blackbee who was 3-4, Stefan Koller 2-2 and Sebastian Zwyer who was 1-2. Final score was 8-2 in favor of the Flyers.

Game one of the double header between the Therwil Flyers and the Embrach Mustangs was an exciting battle all the way to the final out. The match up turned out to be a pitching duel between 3 Flyers pitchers and the Mustangs Roger Savoldelli. The Flyers were the first team able to score. In the second inning there were back to back doubles by Chris Blackbee and Taka Oshima which plated one run. Following his double, Taka Oshima quickly stole third base, but unfortunately was tagged out at home plate on a botched squeeze play.

The Flyers scored again in the third inning, after Adrian Kaufmann led off the inning with a single and then was able to score on a sacrifice fly. The Mustangs scored their first run in the top of the fourth inning after a leadoff double by Josh Crouse, who quickly stole third and then came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Wong. The rest of the story for this game was pitching and defense. Flyers starting pitcher, Hide Oshima, was able to work through five innings, only giving up one run. He kept the hitters off balance all day. Coming in to pitch the next three innings, was Stefan Koller. He worked his way out of a seventh inning jam to complete his day of scoreless pitching.

On the other side of the diamond, Roger Savoldelli kept the Flyers hitters off the board for the rest of the game. They battled, but were unable to push any more runs across. With a one run lead in the ninth inning, closer Adrian Kaufmann came in the game and got one quick out. After the first out was made, he was able to wiggle out of a jam with some help by center fielder Reto Siegel, who threw out the potential tying run at third base. After two walks and two base hits, Kaufmann was able to induce a game ending soft liner to short stop Taka Oshima. Hitting standouts for the Flyers were Taka Oshima and Adrian Kaufmann who both finished the game going 2-3. Final score was 2-1 in favor of the Flyers.

Game two of the double header was postponed due to rain.

Game one of the Saturday double header between the Sissach Frogs and the Therwil Flyers was a high scoring affair. Both teams scored two times in the first inning, but it was the Flyers who kept their offensive momentum going and scored seven more in the second inning, courtesy of seven hits and two errors. Leading the Flyers offensive burst was catcher Emanuel Raouzeos who had two hits, a stolen base, and run scored in the inning. The Flyers continued their offensive outburst by scoring three in the fourth, three in the fifth, one in the sixth, and finally five in the seventh to eventually mercy rule the Frogs. Leading the Flyers offensively was Adrian Kaufmann who was 4-5 with one RBI and two runs scored and Emanuel Raouzeos who was 3-4. Final score was 21-11 in favor of the Flyers.

Game two was a much closer affair. The Frogs got another great pitching performance out of Gary Kahn who threw 5 innings giving up only three runs. Fortunately for the Flyers, that was all they needed as the Flyers pitchers combined for 7 innings of 2 run baseball. Lukas Croton led the Flyers pitchers with four innings of one run baseball. Offensively for the Flyers it was a tough game. The Flyers were only able to score one run, until the fourth inning when Ianis Boutaloup laid down a perfect 2 out drag bunt to get on base and then came around to score on an Adrian Kaufmann double. Following the double, Kaufmann came around to score on a Hide Oshima RBI single. The Flyers scored one more insurance run in the sixth inning to seal the victory. Hitting standouts for the game were Hide Oshima who was 3-4 and Adrian Kaufmann who was 1-2. Final score was 4-2 in favor of the Flyers.

Game one of the Sunday double header between the Therwil Flyers and the Zurich Challengers was a hard fought battle all the way to the end. The starting pitchers for both sides did a tremendous job of keeping the opposing hitters in check. The Challengers were the first team to score in this affair, in the third inning. They took advantage of a two out walk, and then had consecutive singles to take a 1-0 lead. The Flyers answered in the bottom half of the inning, by scoring one of their own. This run came after a two out double by Reto Siegel, followed by a RBI single by Hide Oshima.

Both teams were unable to push any more runs across until the sixth inning, when the Challengers scored two runs courtesy of three hits and an untimely Flyers’ error. Just like earlier in the game, the Flyers answered in the bottom half of the sixth. To lead the inning off, Reto Siegel reached on an error, and then came home to score on a two run home run by catcher JB Tucker. With the game tied through regulation, the Challengers took advantage of a tenth inning walk by reliever Stefan Koller, and were able to score one run on a sac fly by Thomas Blank. In the bottom half of the tenth, the Flyers were able to get two men on, but were unable to score. Hitting standout for the Flyers was Hide Oshima who was 3-5 with a RBI. Final score was 4-3 in favor of the Challengers.

The second game on the hot Sunday afternoon was also a long hard fought battle. The Flyers had a great start, loading the bases in the first inning without recording an out, but unfortunately were only able to scratch one run across. The Flyers extended their lead in the third inning after Chris Blackbee led off with a double and came around to score on a two out error by the Challengers second baseman. With a two run lead, starting pitcher Stefan Koller kept the Challengers at bay, until the fourth inning when they finally scored, after a two out double by Jesus Martinez followed by a RBI single by Thomas Blank.

The Flyers then surrendered their lead in the fifth inning when the leadoff hitter for the Challengers hit a two run home run to take the lead. The Challengers kept their one run lead until the seventh inning, when the Flyers got the first two men on base, then scored one, on an errant throw by the Challengers short stop. With men on second and third with no outs, the Flyers were unable to score another run and take the lead. Once again, for the third straight game, the Flyers went into extra innings. The Challengers were only able to scrape out one hit in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings combined and never threatened to score. The Flyers took advantage of the Challengers declining offense by loading the bases in the eighth inning. With runners on second and third, two outs, and two strikes, veteran outfielder Reto Siegel lined a single up the middle for a dramatic walk off victory. Hitting standouts for the game were Reto Siegel who was 2-5 with a walk off single, and Hide Oshima who was 1-2 but reached base 3 times. Final score was 4-3 in favor of the Flyers.

Game play in Swiss Baseball continues on Saturday when Eduardo Villacis (W 5-2, ERA 2.08) and the Bern Cardinals host the Embrach Mustangs after no-hitting the Zurich Lions in game two last Sunday. Villacis, who looks back at one MLB start in his career, allowed just two walks in seven scoreless no-hit innings and drove in five at the plate in a 10-0 win. Also on Saturday the Barracudas will square off with the Lions. On Sunday the Lucerne Eagles take on the Sissach Frogs and the Therwil Flyers play against the Challengers.

Game One

Game one in the Sunday doubleheader between the Therwil Flyers and the Sissach Frogs was a very close game all the way to the end. The starting pitching for both teams did a tremendous job of keeping the hitters off balance and inducing a lot of ground balls. Both the Frogs and the Flyers pitchers held the opposing offenses to zero runs through five innings, when finally, in the top of the sixth inning Flyers’ catcher JB Tucker broke up the scoreless game with a solo home run to left field. That is all the Flyers pitchers would need as starter Stefan Koller threw five scoreless, reliever Lukas Croton threw 3 scoreless, and Adrian Kaufmann finished the game with one scoreless inning. Although the Flyers pitching was dominating, the offense added a few runs of support in the ninth inning with three walks, three hits and a sacrifice fly to push across four more runs. Final score was 5-0 in favor of the Flyers.

Game Two

Game two on Sunday was a back and forth battle that ended up going into extra innings. The Flyers carried over their late surging offense from game one into the first inning of the second game by scoring two runs. Leadoff hitter, Reto Siegel led off with a sharp single up the middle, followed by another single by Hide Oshima. Both of the lead off runners came around to score by consecutive singles by Stefan Koller and Taka Oshima. After jumping out to an early lead, the Frogs starting pitcher, Gary Kahn, settled in and kept the Flyers offense in check for the next several innings. Trailing two to zero, Frogs right fielder, Thomas Fink, came up with two outs and two runners on in the second inning and drove the ball out of the park to put the Frogs up, 3-2. The Frogs added to their lead in the fourth inning when Grimildo Cuevas led off with a double and scored on a single by Gary Kahn. Trailing by two runs, the Flyers battled back by loading the bases with one out, but unfortunately were only able to score one run on a RBI groundout by leadoff hitter, Reto Siegel. Going into the final inning, trailing by one, Flyer’s catcher JB Tucker was able to connect with a 2-2 fastball, driving it over the left field fence, to tie the game at 4. After shutting down the Frogs in the 7th inning, the Flyers defense struggled in the 8th. After a controversial call that led to an extended at bat Thomas Fink was able to beat out a ground ball that the Flyers short stop, David Castillo, mishandled. With the game tied and a runner on first, the Frogs elected to sacrifice bunt, unfortunately Flyers pitcher, JB Tucker, made an errant throw to second and was unable to record an out. With nobody out and runners on first and second, the Frogs again sacrificed, putting the winning run on third base with one out. After a Frogs strike out, for the second out, Grimildo Cuevas lined the first pitch he saw to the right center field gap to give the Frogs a dramatic walk off victory. Final score was 5-4 in favor of the Frogs.

Kody Hightower led the way with four runs scored and two RBI. Frank Berchtold (W 3-4) got the win after eight innings. Tobias Siegrist (L 3-3) took the loss.

Game one of the Saturday double header between the Therwil Flyers and the Zurich Barracudas was a close game all the way to the end. The Flyers came out in the first inning swinging the bats with authority. The Flyers were able to score 3 runs on 3 hits. After a strong first inning, the Flyers relaxed a bit, and it came back to haunt them. Only scoring one run in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings respectively. They Flyers also got too relaxed on defense and let the Barracudas fight their way back.

Starting pitcher Stefan Koller pitched a good game, up until the 4th inning when his defense fell apart and allowed 4 unearned runs to score. This put the score at 5-4. In the 5th inning, the Flyers had a sloppy combination of pitching and defense that allowed the Barracudas to take the lead. The Barracudas score 3 in the 5th to take a one run lead. The Flyers were able to battle back and tie the game in the 7th inning with a rbi single by Hide Oshima. With the game tied in the top of the 9th inning, the Flyers came alive scoring 6 runs to bury the Barracudas 13-7. Winning pitcher was Adrian Kaufmann who pitched the 8th and 9th surrendering zero runs. Hitting standouts for the game were Chris Blackbee who was 3-6 with a double and a towering HR to left and Adrian Kaufmann who was 2-4 with a double.

The second game between the two Swiss NLA teams was also a tight game. The Flyers again were able to score a run in the first inning, but again the Barracudas fought their way back and tied the game in the bottom of the first. Unlike the first game, the Flyers did not get too relaxed, they kept the pressure on all game.

After scoring a run in the first, the Flyers scored two in the second and one in the 3rd,4th,5th, and 7th innings. This was too much for the Zurich offense. Flyers starting pitcher, Hide Oshima, kept them off balance mixing up his pitches very well and throwing a lot of strikes. He was able to keep the Zurich offense to only 3 runs after 5 innings. Final score was 7-4 in favor of the Flyers. Hitting standouts for the game were Michel La Torre who went 3-4 with 3 singles and Ianis Boutaloup who was 2-3 with a double and a BB.
