Manager Mauro Mazzotti spent nearly two weeks in Spain, holding training camps for members of the Spanish national team in Tenerife and Barcelona to get them in shape for the upcoming season. He got assistance from Miguel Erroz in Tenerife and Felix Cano, Candelario Diaz and Jorge Miqueleiz in Barcelona.

Additionally Mazzotti also extended his contract for two more years until the end of the 2012 season as head coach of the Spanish National Team. The picture shows him and RFEBS President Julio Pernas after the signature.

Spain needs to qualify for the 2012 European Championship in the Netherlands this summer. They will host the tournament in Barcelona from July 25 and 30, playing against Ireland, Switzerland, Finland and Hungary. The technical commission of the CEB recently approved the schedule with games set for 11am and 6pm at the Montjuic ballpark each day.

Local player Eric Gonzalez talked to the Under 18 Spanish baseball players during their training camp in Tenerife about his experience in professional baseball. This year he starred in A+ with the Padres and reached AAA in September. After this, he played with Tiburones de la Guaira.

Eric Gonzalez

Born September 5, 1986 in San Juan de la Rambla/Tenerife

Selected by San Diego Padres in 24th Round of 2008 Amateur Draft

12-7, 93 GP, ERA 4.83, 164 IP, 152 SO, 42 BB combined between 2008 and 20010 (Rookie to AAA)

Mister-Baseball: How was your 2010 Season?

Eric Gonzalez: It didn’t start the best as possible. I had a back injury and I couldn’t prepare me during half season. The competition is very hard but I could take the correct way and finished playing the Venezuelan Winter League before to return to my home for a break.

MRBB: How was your last experience in Venezuela?

EG: It was a very important opportunity in one of the best winter leagues in the World. It helped me to work at my weaknesses alongside of “big league” teammates. It was a cool experience.

MRBB: How will you address this rest time at home?

EG: It was a long season to play in the winter league with a big effort physically and mentally. I’ll try to rest as good as possible, have a nice Christmas with my family and start ready into the next season.

MRBB: What is your goal for the 2011 Season?

EG: I would like to have a healthy season and after this point, play the leagues where I can show my best performance, take the opportunities and reach my highest level.

MRBB: How do you see the European and Spanish baseball level from the USA?

EG: The level in Europe is growing every year. It is a long way to reach the traditional countries but step by step the level is getting better. In Spain it is similar and now the top level teams are very close, the league is getting better and this is very good for the championship development.

MRBB: What do you think European baseball needs for better performance?

EG: It needs better competition, play more games would be great and it will be the difference. At least fifty or sixty games a year or to play during the whole year would be a start. In the most part of Europe the money and the weather is a handicap.

Mister-Baseball thanks Jorge Miqueleiz for doing the interview with Eric Gonzalez.

The Spanish Junior National Team is currently holding a training camp in Tenerife, kicking off preparations for the European Junior Championship in Gijon, Spain next July. Jorge Miqueleiz used the opportunity and did a short interview for Mister-Baseball with manager Miguel Erroz.

Mister-Baseball: What do you think about this training camp?

Miguel Erroz: It is a good opportunity after a long season to teach the players, which have the chance to play a European championship as a host team and prepare the new season with this target in his mind. Here, we can work without a hurry, practice the basics and the tactics before the next activity.

MRBB: What kind of result do you expect in the tournament?

ME: Is very early to talk about results. The level of the teams is usually very close and as well the levels change one year to other. We will work very hard and wise to have the best result as possible, playing a good and fun baseball.

MRBB: How do you see the Preliminary Round Group?

ME: It is a difficult group with one of the heavy favourites like Holland and very good teams like France and Czech Republic. We try to win game by game, all of them will be very important as the level will be very similar. Our goal is to play our best baseball and the tournament decides our level and final standing.

MRBB: What will be the key points for your team?

ME: I would like to be the defense. If our defense is going to be great, we can win against everyone.

MRBB: Do you have a lot of players from the Braves Academy?

ME: The base of the team is from the Braves Academy. This is very interesting because they practiced before and have a high quality practice. This project can help to increase the baseball level here in Spain.

MRBB: Can you do the work as manager of Baseball Navarra and the National Team?

ME: A lot of players will be playing with their teams in the National League. As the competitions won’t be at the same time and we can do it without problems.

Thanks to Mister-Baseball for its overage about baseball and Spanish baseball.

Mister-Baseball thanks Miguel Erroz for the interview.

by www.baseballeurope.com

National team coach Mauro Mazzotti worked from November 5 to 14 with a group of twelve young players who have a chance to make the Spanish national squad in the years to come, taking advantage of the good climate and the recently improved facilities at the ballpark in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. He was assisted by coach Miguel Erroz and the team’s senior shortstop Nestor Perez, who is working as a coach before his comeback as a player after missing out the 2010 European Championship with a muscle injury. Another important member of the staff was Antonio De Paz, the national team’s trainer and physiotherapist, who had the opportunity to apply the skill he recently renewed in Orlando, Fla. with his fellow Atlanta Braves specialists. The event was supervised by the director of baseball operations of the RFEBS, Mr. Juan Carlos Cerda, which underlines the importance of the event and the players at hand for the Spanish federation.

The sessions included general and position specific workouts, batting practice on the field, gym and pool workouts in the Maritim Hotel, just across the street from the ballpark. The skilled instructors, highly motivated athletes and the good climatic conditions made everyone involved agree that the meeting was a full success.

While most parts of European Baseball are already limited to indoor activities several members of the Spanish National Team are currently holding a training camp in Tenerife with manager Mauro Mazzotti and coaches Miguel Erroz and Nestor Perez. The work outs in picture perfect weather conditions will continue through Sunday morning. The players are mostly from the Division de Honor with the exception of infielder Gonzalo Briones and outfielder Herman Armas.

Especially Armas (picture) could leave his mark in Europe next season. The 23-year-old from San Christobal, Venezuela most recently got his Spanish passport and is already drawing interest from various European teams.
Eleven members, all position players, of the Spanish national team and four coaches will hold an instructional-league-like training camp in Tenerife from November 6 to 14. Especially fundamentals will be on focus during the daily work-outs. After reaching the second round at the Baseball World Cup in 2009, Spain didn’t fulfill expectations at the European Championship in Germany this summer. Winning just two of five games during the preliminary round against Croatia and Sweden, the Iberian team had to settle for ninth place in the final standings.

The Spanish national team impressed at the Baseball World Cup in Europe last September and qualified for the second round. In the upcoming European Championship in Stuttgart, Heidenheim and Neuenburg they will try to repeat this success. They are slotted into Pool B with Italy, Great Britain, Sweden, Croatia and Greece. Mister-Baseball spoke to manager Mauro Mazzotti about the tournament.

Mister-Baseball: What do you expect from your team in Stuttgart, Heidenheim and Neuenburg?

Mauro Mazzotti: Well, after the good outings at the World Cup, we hope to confirm our improvements.

MRBB: Can a team challenge defending Champion Netherlands in the 2010 European Championship? Which teams have the best chances of advancing in your group?

MM: No doubt that on paper Italy is the best of our group, but as you well know it’s never easy in short tournaments.

MRBB: Which team could be the surprise of the tournament?

MM: I hope Spain will be the surprise.

MRBB: General speaking is the level of play in European Baseball getting better and more balanced since the EC 2007 or is there still a gap between the top teams and the underdogs?

MM: Good pitching and good defense are the ones that make the difference. Usually when the lower level teams use pitcher number 1 & number 2 the gap is very thin, but the problem is when they need to use pitcher number 4 and 5. Anyway besides Italy and Holland most of the have this concern.

MRBB: There will be only a few professional players in the tournament. Does this will have an influence and does it hurt some teams more than others?

MM: Here in Europe if we want to grow up a notch we have to sell the best product we can manufacture and of course the dates of the tournament penalizes big time this possibility.

MRBB: Looking at the rosters of the other teams, which players could be especially worthy to watch?

MM: I think Anthony Granato for Italy and Sidney de Jong [Editor’s Note: Netherlands] are the best players to watch.

MRBB: What is your plan for the final days before the Euro 2010? Which exhibition games do you have planned?

MM: We’ll get together in Milan for a 4-day training camp then move to Novara for the Italian Baseball Week and from there go straight to Stuttgart.

MRBB: Do you already have a starting lineup in place and who will be in your starting rotation?

MM: Still early to say.

Mister-Baseball thanks Mauro Mazzotti for answering our questions and wishes good luck in the European Championship.

Until the start of the 38th Baseball World Cup next week, Mister-Baseball.com would like to publish a series of Q&As with representatives of the European participants in the tournament. Mauro Mazzotti, manager of the Spanish National Team is up first.

Mister-Baseball: What do you expect from your team during the Baseball World Cup?

Mauro Mazzotti: Well, we expect to pass the first round and try to win a spot in the Netherlands or Italy.

MRBB: Is Baseball getting more attention in the media and in the public due to the World Cup?

MM: At the moment I don’t see any difference, but I hope that once the BWC will start it’ll be different.

MRBB: Which team is the favorite in your pool?

MM: Cuba, of course. They’re the favorite of our pool and even to win the whole thing.

MRBB: What do you think are the keys to success during the tournament?

MM: I think you have to play all the games like it’ll be the last one and do not make any calculation.

MRBB: Any injury concerns with the current team? Everybody healthy? What about Marc Carrillo? Can he play?

MM: So far, so good. Marc Carrillo is working hard to try to come back, but it’ll not be easy. Let’s see after this week.

MRBB: Is the regular starting lineup already set or will you go with the hot hand?

MM: We played yesterday the first practice games and we’re still a work in progress.

MRBB: Which pitchers are going to start in the three games during the first round?

MM: We’re still awaiting three pitchers from the USA. We’ll decide when they’ll be here.

Mister-Baseball would like to thank Mauro Mazzotti for answering the questions and wishes good luck in the Baseball World Cup.

Tomorrow: Croatia

A few weeks ago, Mauro Mazzotti, who is also the manager of the Italian club Telemarket Rimini and the head of scouting in Europe for the Houston Astros organization, agreed on a two-year contract to manage the Spanish national team. Mister-Baseball asked a few questions about his new job.

Mister-Baseball: Congratulations to your new job as manager of the Spanish National Team. How did you get in contact with the Spanish Federation?

Mauro Mazzotti: It’s a long time that I’m in touch with the Spanish Federation. In the past I did clinics and courses for the local coaches, so we developed a kind of friendship that took us to this agreement.

MRBB: How much got Spanish Baseball better in recent years and will the new-founded Academy in Tenerife have an influence on the sport in the country?

MM: I think that Spain got better recently because the local players got better and because the management worked hard to find quality players around the world with Spanish passport. The mix helped to get closer to Italy and Holland.

The Academy in Tenerife is a very good thing, but in order to answer your question we’ll need to wait at least a couple of years.

MRBB: You are also the manager of the Italian Baseball League club Telemarket Rimini. How do you manage these two jobs? You’re probably reaching the playoffs with Rimini. Doesn’t this affect the preparation phase with the Spanish National Team?

MM: I go one or twice a month to Spain to scout the league and the players that we’re following. Plus I have Miguel Erroz, Candelario Diaz and Felix Cano that work for me as coaches and scouts, so we keep the whole league under control. Besides the Spanish League we have Spanish players in Italy and in the Minors in the US. So as you can see scouting and data base are kind of important in this part of the season.

My job in Rimini will not affect at all because the Spanish national team will get together on August 24, when the Italian Baseball League will be finished. Anyway I really hope to make it till the end with Rimini [ed. note: smiling].

MRBB: What is more important for the Spanish NT, the 2009 Baseball World Cup or the 2010 European Championships?

MM: Well both are kind of important even though we realize that the competition in the World Cup is way higher that the on in the Euro 2010.

MRBB: The Barcelona pool with Cuba, Puerto Rico and South Africa is a tough one. What are your chances for round number two?

MM: I think we have a chance to advance into round two. In our group only Cuba will be way stronger than the other teams.

MRBB: The season in the Spain ends at the beginning of August. What are your plans regarding the long break between the end of the league competition and the beginning of the BWC? Are there already exhibition games scheduled?

MM: As I told you here above we’ll start our work outs on August 24th and later we’ll play a five-game exhibition series against a alumni team of UCLA, which will travel to Spain at the beginning of September.

MRBB: How will you select the roster? You already mentioned that you will choose players from the Spanish and Italian league and the minors in the US. Will you rely solely on scouting reports by your coaching staff or do you also plan to travel to Spain for a few games? What do you think will the roster look much different in comparison to the 2007 World Cup and European Championship, respective the 2008 Olympic qualifier?

MM: I think most of the players will be confirmed, but it’s still early to say.

MRBB: Regarding the World Cup, do you think the European teams besides the Netherlands have a chance to surprise in the tournament? Which of the first round participants Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, Sweden, Russia and Great Britain are most likely to advance?

MM: Still I think it’s still too early to make a preview, but it seems that Germany and Great Britain improved a lot lately.

Mister-Baseball thanks Mauro Mazzotti that he was so kind to answer a few questions about his new job as manager of the Spanish National Team.

The current manager of the Italian Baseball League club Telemarket Rimini signed for two years. His first big tournament at the helm is going to be the 38th IBAF Baseball World Cup in September. Spain is playing in Pool B at home in Barcelona against Cuba, Puerto Rico and South Africa in the preliminary round.

Mazzotti was born on September 12, 1959 in Cesena, Italy and is the only coach in Italian history to win four championships with three different clubs (Rimini 1999, Bologna 2003/2005, Grosseto 2007). He was introduced as new manager of Rimini a few weeks ago and celebrated a successful season opening weekend with three victories against Grosseto. Between 1994 and 2006 he coordinated the scouting activities of the Seattle Mariners in Europe and works in the same position with the Houston Astros since 2007.

The RFEBS also announced that Miguel Erroz, Candelario Diaz and Felix Cano will serve as assistant coaches for Mazzotti, with two more coaches being named to the staff later.

The Spanish National Team played their second exhibition today against Point Loma Nazarene College at gorgeous Carroll B. Land Stadium. The Spaniards were treated to crystal blue skies and temperatures around 22 degrees.

Manuel OLIVERA was on the mound to start again for Spain. He looked good through the first two, picking off two base runners and facing the minimum six batters. OLIVERA ran into trouble in the third when he was touched up for a two-run homerun by Kurt STEINHAUER. OLIVERA gave up a single one out later, but after that he retired eight in a row. Well, he did hit a guy, but picked him off as well.

In the fourth Spain struck back. Dewis NAVARRO was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and he moved to second on a single by Marc CARRILLO. Pedro MENDEZ sacrificed the runners up a base, and Jose Luis RIERA turned his second hit of the game into an RBI. Lesther GALVAN added a sacrifice fly to round out the scoring in the fourth, and the game was tied.

It remained that way until the sixth. With the bases empty and two outs Pedro MENDEZ beat out an infield single. RIERA dropped in his third hit of the game, and Spain was in business. Lesther GALVAN then split the alley in left centerfield to drive home MENDEZ and give Spain a 3-2 lead.

The bullpen looked strong for Spain. Rhiner CRUZ, Jorge BALBOA, and Audie NUNEZ all pitched a scoreless inning of relief. But in the ninth Fernando GUTIERREZ walked the leadoff batter. The next hitter sacrificed him to second, and GUTIERREZ allowed both men to move up a base when his throw sailed down the right field line. GUTIERREZ went 3-1 on the next hitter before he dribbled a ball down the first base line. The ball hit the base, and bounced off Victor LOPEZ, now playing first, allowing the tying run to score.

Spain gave an intentional walk to load the bases with nobody out. GUTIERREZ induced a shallow fly ball to right for the first out. He then tied up a good hitter and got him to pop up to first. Just when it looked like GUTIERREZ might get out of it the next batter hit a slow ground ball between first and second. Danny SANCHEZ dove for it, but could not hold on and the winning run scored.

The Spanish team, which could work out in PETCO Park, will play two more exhibition games. They will face Cal State San Marcos on Thursday and the San Diego City College on Friday to conclude their training camp in South California.
