CB Viladecans with new Coaches, foreign Starting Pitcher

The Spanish record champion CB Viladecans played a terrific 2011 season, which ended with a fourth-place finish. They concluded the year by winning 13 of the last 14 games and showed signs to again become one of the top teams of the Division de Honor. Felix Cano and Denny Nino have taken over as new coaches to lead the squad into the 2012 campaign. Nino also is going to continue to catch, especially after Eric Segura left for Baseball Barcelona.

On the mound Juan Carlos Campos replaces Luis Alberto Amaro as foreign starting pitcher. He is a former minor leaguer in the Houston Astros organization. Between 2000 and 2003 the 31-year-old Venezuelan had an ERA of 2.96 in 285 1/3 innings. Back healthy is infielder Camilo Alberto Gonzalez. From the Viladecans farm team Javier Monzon and Yuri Despaigne will be promoted to the Division de Honor roster.

CB Sant Boi announces Transfers of the winter

After interviewing Jorge Miqueleiz of the FC Barcelona a couple of days ago, the blog of the Catalan baseball and softball federation did the same with Edgar Hernandez of vice champion CB Sant Boi. The new manager revealed six arrivals and 10 departures. New on the team will be Manuel Torres, Elias Jimenez, Roberto Noriega, Rafael Llames, Hyneko Vazquez and Sergi Rossello. Not coming back are Eliezer Garcia, Daniel Fernandez, Alexander Hernandez, Winston Marquez, Lowin Sacramento, Rafael Rivas, Juan Salazar, Daniel Sanchez, Yorman Burguillos and Victor Perez. Edgar Hernandez has replaced Luis Silva at the helm.

New Manager for Baseball Barcelona

Baseball Barcelona, the successor of the FC Barcelona, is going to have a new manager going into the 2012 season. Jorge Miqueleiz, a former player of the team who retired two years ago, is going to be the new skipper. He follows Aldo Tarife at the helm. Carlos Rymer and Josep Juaneda also will be part of the coaching staff.

We already reported about the acquisitions of Eric Segura, Abel Jimenez, Kevin Malone and Daniel Cepin. No longer part of the team are Emmanuel Febles, Oscar Angulo, Jose Luis Salazar, Ricardo Hernandez, Jason Friedman, Rafael Llames, Cole Yanco Rancoll, Felix Isasi, Sebastian Tesouro and Jose Carreras.

Miqueleiz gave a short interview to the blog of the Catalan Baseball and Softball Federation. He mentions winning the Copa del Rey and qualification for the playoffs as goals for the upcoming season in the Spanish Division de Honor. Baseball Barcelona is entering as defending champion and is also representing Spain in the European Cup.

Edgar Hernandez new Manager of CB Sant Boi

The Spanish Division de Honor club CB Sant Boi has a new manager. Edgar Hernandez is taking over for the champion from 2010. After winning the title, Sant Boi finished in second place in 2011 with a 26-10 record, seven games behind the FC Barcelona. In the European Cup in Rotterdam they managed a pair of wins against the North Stars Moscow and the Hoboken Pioneers for a fifth-place finish.

Outfielder Daniel Cepin from UC Davis to Barcelona

22-year-old outfielder Daniel Cepin is the latest new player to be announced by Baseball Barcelona. In possession of an American and a Spanish passport he is coming from the University of California in Davis to Spain. The switch hitter batted .250/.303/.276 with four doubles, 16 runs and 14 RBI in 49 games for UC Davis in 2011. His grandparents are from Barcelona.

Baseball Barcelona adds Utility Player

Baseball Barcelona has added utility man Abel Jiménez. The 25-year-old is coming from Hercules L’Hospitalet and batted .260 in 13 games in the Liga Nacional in 2011. This upcoming season in the Spanish Division de Honor he is going to be reunited with his brother Oscar Jiménez, a pitcher in the Barcelona organization.

Eric Segura from CB Viladecans to Baseball Barcelona

20-year-old catcher Eric Segura is leaving CB Viladecans to join Baseball Barcelona in the Spanish Division de Honor. He had spent his whole career with Viladecans and is supposed to replace Jose Luis Salazar behind the plate of the reigning Spanish champion. Segura batted .210/.280/.286 with six extra base hits, 16 runs and 18 RBI in 35 games (33 starts).

Kevin Malone from Valencia to Barcelona

The successor of the FC Barcelona in the Spanish Division de Honor, Baseball Barcelona, is announcing its first acquisition for the 2012 season, which starts at the end of February. The 24-year-old American Kevin Malone is leaving the Astros Valencia after two years. He is moving to Barcelona due to work related reasons and joins a new club. In 2011 he was batting .311/.411/.467 with two homeruns, three triples, nine doubles, 32 runs and 20 RBI in 35 games. He is supposed to replace Emmanuel Febles as leadoff hitter, who is going to play for Baseball Navarra.

Emmanuel Febles joins, Juan Jose Lopez leaves Baseball Navarra

It is a quite offseason in the Spanish Division de Honor so far, but this doesn’t mean nothing is going on at the transfer market. Mister-Baseball got word, that Baseball Navarra has been doing some roster changes.

Infielder Emmanuel Febles, who also can man the outfield, is leaving the FC Barcelona after five years to join the Pamplona based team. He batted .289/.395/.423 with two homeruns, five triples, three doubles, 39 runs and 16 RBI in 36 games, winning the championship.

On the other hand one of the key players is leaving Baseball Navarra. After seven years in Pamplona, two with CD Amaya and five with Navarra, Juan Jose Lopez didn’t receive a new contract for 2012. The shouthpaw had a 3-6 record with an ERA of 3.42 in 18 games (16 starts). He collected 116 strikeouts and 48 walks in 113 innings.

After being in the top four in 2010, Baseball Navarra dropped to eighth place in the final standings of the 2011 season. They won just 12 of the 36 games this year.

CB Sant Boi gets new Softball Field

The Spanish Baseball and Softball club CB Sant Boi is receiving a new softball field. The picture shows the construction progress from a couple of days ago. Warning tracks and the outfield receives an asphalt layer as fundament for the coming artificial turf. The infield is going to be softball like all dirt.

2012 Schedule, Format Change announced for Spanish Division de Honor

The Spanish Baseball and Softball Federation released the schedule for the 2012 season in the Division de Honor on Monday. There will be a few changes. The biggest is probably the introduction of a playoff round to determine the national champion. Following the regular season the two top teams in the standings will meet for a playoff series, spread over two weekends.

Also the FC Barcelona will be replaced by a team, called Baseball Barcelona. More details about this project are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks. Also El Llano Gijon is back in the Division de Honor, moving up from the second division and replacing last year’s tenth-ranked club Sevilla Red Sox.

The 2012 season in the Division de Honor starts on the weekend of February 25 and 26. Defending champion Baseball Barcelona will meet with Baseball Navarra. The first break will be for the Copa Del Rey on April 7 and 8 with Baseball Barcelona, CB Sant Boi, CB Viladecans and the Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz. The season also is interrupted on April 21&22 (RFEBS Elections), May 12&13 and June 23&24.

The season ends on the weekend of July 21&22. Two weeks later the playoffs start with a champion determined no later than August 12. Baseball Barcelona will represent Spain in the European Cup, trying to defend their lone remaining A-Pool spot.

The Astros Valencia continued their march up in the standings, finishing with the same 24-12 record as record title holder CB Viladecans in fourth place. The Astros were in contention for the championship in the first half of the season. But a streak of just three wins in ten games in May and June ended their hopes.

12 position players from the Spanish Senior and Junior National Teams are in Tenerife from November 10 to 19 to participate in an instructional league like training camp under the supervision of manager Mauro Mazzotti, coaches Miguel Erroz, Nestor Perez Jr., trainer Antonio Paz and RFEBS technical director Juan Carlos Cerda.

The ten-day camp is only for position players with a focus on individual and team fundamentals. The group of players consists of a mix between Junior and Senior National Team. The next big tasks for the Seniors will be the 2012 European Championship in the Netherlands and the World Baseball Classic Qualifier next fall. For the Juniors the next European Championship will be in 2013.

The 21-year-old Venezuelan left-handed pitcher Ricardo Hernandez is leaving the Spanish champion FC Barcelona to join the Italian vice champion Danesi Nettuno for the 2012 season. According to the report by Baseball.it other teams from the Italian Baseball League were interested as well. During the title campaign in the Division de Honor he went 15-0 with an ERA of 0.82 in 17 games (15 starts). He allowed just 59 hits in 120 2/3 innings, struck out 172 and walked 37. He had kicked off the 2011 season with a no-hit complete game shutout against the Astros Valencia, missing the perfect game by two batters (hit by pitch, error). He is currently pitching in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Spanish Juvenile Baseball Championship for Regional Selections

Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife was the host to the 2011 Spanish Juvenile Baseball Championship and four selections got together to find out who reigns the category this year. Canary Islands and Catalunya made it into the finals while Navarra and Madrid were left to play for third place. That match was won by Navarra with a 5-4 score after trailing Madrid 0-4 at the end of inning number three. Canary Island had already a 1-0 advantage in games from the preliminary stage and the first of the two scheduled final matches would be enough for the hosts to maintain their crown the hold for the third year in a row now.

This was the first time the Spanish Federation held a national championship for young categories on the Canary Islands and the success both in terms of organization and quality play for sure will bring more events to Tenerife.

The Spanish Division de Honor will finish up the 2011 season this weekend. The championship is already decided, as the FC Barcelona clinched their first title since 1956 two weeks ago. They will travel to Bilbao for a meeting with San Inazio. The most interesting matchup might be a duel between the Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz and CB Sant Boi.

CS Viladecans wins Spanish Softball Championship

CS Viladecans defended its title and repeated as Spanish Softball champion after completing a three-game sweep in the final series of the Division de Honor Softball on Sunday against PS Gavanenc. An 8-0 shutout in the decisive game three of the series was enough to clinch a second straight championship.

CS Viladecans one Win away from defending Spanish Softball Championship

The best-of-five finals in the Spanish Division de Honor Softball started last weekend with defending champion CS Viladecans taking the first two games against PS Gavanenc. In game one Sara Dooley struck out eleven in a pitcher’s duel against Mariah Fike. An error by the shortstop finally decided the outcome in the ninth inning, the third extra frame. Jessica Iborra scored the lone run. Afterwards Viladecans used offense to prevail 10-5 and to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Games three to potentially five will by played in Viladecans next Sunday.

FC Barcelona wins Spanish Championship

With two weeks left on the schedule the FC Barcelona has won the championship in the Spanish Division de Honor. They celebrated a pair of lopsided wins on their road trip to Sevilla this weekend, out-scoring the Red Sox 33-1 in two games. The 15-0 in game one on Saturday was the clincher, as Jason Friedman and Andres Gimeno allowed just seven hits in eight scoreless innings, combining for 12 strikeouts. Jesus Golindano, Pau Sancho, Oscar Roman and Rafael Llames hit homeruns in the game.

Final Series in Division de Honor Softball starts this Weekend

Defending champion CS Viladecans and PS Gavanenc open a best-of-five championship series in the Spanish Division de Honor Softball this Sunday. Games one and two will be played at the site of Gavanenc, while the decisive up to three games will follow one week later at Viladecans. CS had won the regular season with a 16-4 record, while PS edged out Eguzki OBB for second place with 12 wins in 20 games.

CB Viladecans improved to 18-12 in 2011 with wins of 5-4 and 7-5 over Halcones de Vigo last weekend in the Spanish Division de Honor. With the sweep they are comfortably in fifth in the standings and could make a late-season run towards fourth place. Halcones dropped to 9-21 and eighth.

CD Pamplona – CB Sant Boi 2-4, 1-16

CB Sant Boi swept a doubleheader against CD Pamplona at Burlada. In game one Ruben Fente (W 1-2) went the distance to lead CB to a 4-2 victory. Gabriel Guerrero hit a solo homerun for Pamplona. Rafael Rivas scored twice for the guests from Catalonia. Alexis Fumero (L 4-11) kept his team in the game, issuing eight hits, three runs (1 ER) and no walks in eight frames.

In the second match Sant Boi scored five runs in the fifth and six in the eighth for a lopsided 16-1 win. Daniel Martinez, William Domero and Xavier Civit hit homeruns and combined for seven RBI. Marc Carrillo drove in three. Daniel Matias (W 2-0) conceded two hits and a walk in five scoreless innings. Eneko Del Burgo (L 0-5) gave up nine hits, eight runs and a bb in 4 1/3 innings.

FC Barcelona – Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz 6-3, 3-4

Leading 2-0 after seven innings in game two of a doubleheader against the Tenerife Marlins, the FC Barcelona was just six outs away from celebrating the championship in the Spanish Division de Honor last Saturday. But the Marlins rallied for four runs on a wild pitch, a big two-run error and a bases loaded walk in the top of the eighth en route to a 4-3 win. Barcelona tried to come back in the ninth, but only managed a one-out RBI single by Jason Friedman to cut the deficit to a run. Jesus Golindano and Pau Sancho had driven in runs earlier in the game. Eric Gonzalez (W 4-1) allowed seven hits, three runs and two walks in nine innings for the win. Jorge Balboa (L 10-1) was charged with his first loss of the season, conceding five hits, four runs (2 ER) and seven bb in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out eleven. Reliever Andres Gimeno walked six of the ten batters he faced.

In game one the FC Barcelona had prevailed 6-3. Emmanuel Febles went 4-for-4 with a double and three runs. Oscar Angulo drove in three. Richard Montiel gave Puerto Cruz a short-lived 2-1 lead with a two-run double in the third. Ricardo Hernandez (W 13-0) struck out eleven in nine innings, giving up ten hits, three runs and a walk. Yoel Hernandez (L 7-4) allowed ten hits, six runs (5 ER) and three bb in 3 1/3 innings.

But even though the FC Barcelona couldn’t complete the sweep, the championship will be eventually in the books, as they still sport a five-game lead with six games to go.

Astros Valencia – Sevilla Red Sox 18-3 (5), 14-1 (7)

The Astros Valencia dispatched the Sevilla Red Sox 18-3 and 14-1. In game one the Astros scored twelve runs in bottom of the fifth to blow things wide open. Whitney Robinson-Pierce highlighted the rally with a pair of three-run homeruns. Sandel Cuevas also went deep in the frame. Raul Pena hit a three-run homerun for Sevilla. Luis Galicia (W 1-0) allowed seven hits, three runs and two walks in seven innings. Richard Villa (L 0-1) conceded five hits, eleven runs (10 ER) and nine bb in 4 1/3 innings.

In the second match Sandel Cuevas hit a grand slam and drove in five to lead Valencia to the victory. Kevin Malone went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Pedro Luis Peraza (W 2-2) issued eight hits, an unearned run and a walk in five innings. Diego Corvalan (L 0-4) allowed seven hits, seven runs (4 ER) and a bb in 4 2/3 innings.

San Inazio Bilbao – Baseball Navarra 6-3, 4-1

San Inazio Bilbao swept their two-game series against Baseball Navarra. In game one three runs in the sixth helped Bilbao to overcome a 1-2 deficit in a 6-3 win. Kelvin Marianucci homered and drove in two for San Inazio. Adolfo Gonzalez had three hits, scored all three Navarra runs and also went deep. Fidel Torres Mane (W 2-2) picked up the win with 5 1/3 innings of solid relief. Juan Jose Lopez (L 2-5) allowed five hits, four runs (2 ER) and six bb in six innings.

In the second match Alberto Magallon (W 6-8) led Bilbao to a 4-1 win, issuing five hits, a run and a walk in nine innings. Javier Flores drove in two. Joseba San Andres added a two-run homerun. Andres Casado (L 4-4) conceded six hits, four runs and two bb in six innings.

Results Spanish Division de Honor June 25&26

The FC Barcelona has to wait at least one more week to celebrate its championship in the Spanish Division de Honor. On Saturday they split a doubleheader against the Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz, but maintained its five-game lead in the standings with six games to go. The Marlins scored four runs in the top of the eighth in game two to avoid the sweep and to delay the festivities.

Sporting a five-game lead with eight games to go, the FC Barcelona hosts the Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz in the Spanish Division de Honor on Saturday. A sweep and the FC Barcelona can celebrate its first championship since ages. Ricardo Hernandez and Jorge Balbo are expected to start for the home team. The Marlins probably will counter with Leslie Nacar and Eric Gonzalez. Two thrilling games are guaranteed. The regular season in the Spanish Division de Honor Softball ended last Sunday. Defending champion CS Viladecans concluded the 20-game schedule with a pair of wins over Krafft San Sebastian, securing first place with a 16-4 record. PS Gavanenc and Eguzki OBB also picked up sweeps and remained in second and third place with twelve wins apiece. CBS Antorcha, which had won eight of the first ten games of the season, finished with two more losses in fourth place.

Halcones de Vigo and CD Pamplona settled for the split this weekend in the Spanish Division de Honor. In game one Pamplona scored two quick runs en route to a 2-1 win. Alexis Fumero (W) struck out eleven in a complete game, allowing just eight hits, a run and two walks. Jose Angel Navas (L) collected even 14 Ks in nine innings, but also issued two runs (1 ER) on four hits and three bb.

In the second game Fumero went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, four runs and six RBI playing right field and third base. However CD still lost 12-15, as Halcones scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to decide the outcome of a wild game. Angel Virguez drove in four for Vigo. Marcos Trillo had four hits, two runs and two RBI. Alejandro Carrillo (W) received the win in relief. Eneko Del Burgo (L) took the complete game loss.

CB Sant Boi – FC Barcelona 10-11, 5-9

With two wins over CB Sant Boi the FC Barcelona made a big step towards winning the championship in the Spanish Division de Honor. In game one Barca nearly blew a big lead in the ninth when Sant Boi scored six times, but prevailed 11-10. In the second game they celebrated a 9-5 win and a five-game lead in the standings. The FC Barcelona is hosting the Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz on Saturday.

The Tenerife Marlins moved into second place in the standings of the Division de Honor with a sweep over the Astros Valencia. In game one Leslie Nacar (W 3-0) struck out ten in a complete game shutout to lead Puerto Cruz to a 4-0 win. He allowed just four hits and a walk in nine innings. Richard Montiel doubled twice, scored and drove in a run. Trevor Caughey (L 9-2) suffered his second loss of the season, giving up four runs (3 ER) on nine hits and two bb in eight frames.

In the second part of the twin bill Yancarlo Franco led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple and later scored the winning run on a double play groundball by Dewis Navarro. Sandel Cuevas had tied the game in the top of the frame with a RBI double. Yoel Hernandez (W 7-3) struck out six in two innings of wild relief to pick up the win. Eric Gonzalez (MPC) had conceded six hits, a run and four bb in seven innings. Pedro Pablo Belmonte (L 7-5) allowed nine hits, three runs and two bb in eight innings.

Sevilla Red Sox – San Inazio Bilbao 0-20 (6), 0-18 (5)

San Inazio Bilbao dispatched the Sevilla Red Sox with a pair of blowouts. In game one Bilbao scored in five of the six innings en route to a 20-0 shutout. Fidel Torres Mane (W 1-2) allowed just two hits in six scoreless innings for his first win of the season. Eight players crossed the plate at least twice. Tomas Alvarez hit a grand slam and drove in six. Ruben Cabrera went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI. Alejandro Pena (L 0-4) took the loss, getting charged with eight hits and six runs in two frames.

In the second game the Red Sox actually kept things close, before San Inazio blew things open with six runs in the fourth and nine in the fifth for an 18-0 win. Javier Flores went 3-for-3 with a homerun, three runs scored and four RBI. Alberto Magallon (W 5-8) issued three hits and a walk in five scoreless innings. Diego Corvelan (L 0-3) gave up nine hits, nine runs (3 ER) and a bb in 3 2/3 innings.

Baseball Navarra – CB Viladecans 8-11 (12), 6-5

Baseball Navarra and CB Viladecans settled for the split this weekend. In game one Viladecans broke a 7-7 tie with four runs in the top of the twelfth en route to an 11-8 win. Both teams had scored once in the tenth. CB had sent the contest into extra innings with a RBI groundout by Alex Tenllado in the top of the ninth. Denny Nino drove in three. Marc Jodar (W 3-1) received the win in relief of Carlos Luis Amaro. Hector Perozo (L 1-6) had replaced Juan Jose Lopez after five innings to take the loss.

In the second game Victor Martinez scored the winning run on a wild pitch of Eric Collado (L 0-1) with no outs in the bottom of the ninth to give Navarra a 6-5 win. After Viladecans had put four runs on the board in the top of the seventh, they had scored three in the bottom of the frame to tie the game. Adolfo Gonzalez went deep for Navarra, Miguel Catalan and Javier Monzon for CB. Yorking Cespedes (W 3-3) picked up the win in relief.

Spanish Federation announces Provisional Junior NT Roster

The Royal Spanish Baseball and Softball Federation (RFEBS) announced a 25-man provisional Junior National Team roster for the upcoming European Championship in Gijon, Spain. Technical Director Juan Carlos Ceda invited seven players apiece from the FC Barcelona and the Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz. Sant Boi, Irabia, Antorcha, San Lazaro and Viladecans are also represented. The training camp to finish up preparations starts next Sunday in Gijon. Afterwards five players will be cut to bring the final roster down to 20 players.

The FC Barcelona has made another big step towards winning the championship in the Spanish Division de Honor. Against defending champion and former second-ranked team CB Sant Boi Barca celebrated wins of 11-10 and 9-5 this weekend. In game one on Saturday Barcelona however nearly blew a big 11-4 lead, when they allowed six runs in the bottom of the ninth. They now have a five-game lead over the Tenerife Marlins, which swept the Astros Valencia and will play against Barcelona next week.

This weekend defending champion CB Sant Boi is hosting the FC Barcelona for a two-game series in the Spanish Division de Honor. It could be the last chance for Sant Boi to stop Barca on its way to the championship, as they have a four-game lead in the standings with just five weeks to go in the season. Additionally the teams in third and fourth, the Tenerife Marlins and Astros Valencia, are squaring off for another matchup between upper-half teams.

With the sweep defending champion Viladecans secured first place in the standings thanks to increasing the lead to four games. While the future of baseball at the FC Barcelona remains in doubt, the team swept a doubleheader against Halcones de Vigo on Saturday to solidify first place in the Spanish Division de Honor. They even extended their lead, as CB Sant Boi had to settle for a split against the Astros Valencia. Oscar Angulo led Barcelona in game one, going 4-or-5 with four RBI in a 7-2 win. Jorge Balbo struck out 14 in a complete game victory in a 2-1 game two.

Associated Press reports on FC Barcelona’s Decision to cut Baseball

Even the Washington Post has reported on the dismissal of Baseball at the FC Barcelona, publishing a long article by the Associated Press. An excerpt:

BARCELONA, Spain — Barcelona fans and athletes gathered in front of Camp Nou stadium on Thursday to protest the elimination of the club’s 80-year-old baseball team and the decision to slash funding for 12 minority sports teams.

About a hundred adult and children players from a variety of Barcelona’s amateur sports teams held a long banner in support of the endangered baseball team that read: “Don’t think about the season, think about the history: 80 years.”

“The feeling is one of shock,” FC Barcelona pitcher and first baseman Jason Friedman, a Chicago native, told The Associated Press. “Until this point it felt very secure, we felt that baseball was important to the club. … It has been a real blow to us.”

The actual competition in the Division de Honor has taken a back seat in the last two weeks, thanks to the decision by the board of directors at the FC Barcelona to drastically reduce the budget for all the non-football sections of the organization, including cutting baseball from the program. You can support baseball’s cause by attending the two games between the FC Barcelona and Halcones de Vigo on Saturday. First pitch at Montjuic is scheduled for 3pm. There is also a Facebook page.

Future for Baseball at FC Barcelona in Doubt

While the FC Barcelona is on the verge of winning the championship in the Spanish Division de Honor, the future of Baseball and all the non-professional sections of the famous organization is in doubt. And this just a few days after the FC Barcelona won the UEFA Champions League.

Last week the board of directors of the FC Barcelona decided to reduce the budgets for the non-professional section and one of the first steps is to cut Baseball from the program, which has been part of the club since 1931. The rest of the non-professional sections cannot play in national or international championships next year, only in Catalonia. Also, with the exception of football, all the professional sections will have to work with a reduce budget in the coming years.

But Baseball is not going down without a fight. The responsible people are currently waiting for a meeting with the board of directors to convince them to undo the decision and allow Baseball back in the club and all sections back into national and international championships. Otherwise this topic is making huge news in local TV stations and news papers. On the upcoming weekend all fans should go to the ballpark in Montjuic to support the sport during the two-game series against Halcones de Vigo.

The loss of the FC Barcelona would be huge for European Baseball, so we all should try to help. Most of us probably won’t have the opportunity to travel to Barcelona, but you still can support the movement for example on Facebook. Mister-Baseball is going to keep you up to date about the issue.

In game one Ricardo Hernandez (W 10-0) struck out twelve in six scoreless three-hit innings to lead Barcelona to an 8-2 win. Jose Luis Riera went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Alexis Fumero (L 3-9) gave up nine hits, six runs (5 ER) and four bb in seven innings.

In the second match Lowin Sacramento (W 9-2) conceded three hits and three bb in eight scoreless innings to lead Sant Boi to a 5-0 shutout. He struck out eight. Daniel Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI. Alberto Magallon (L 4-7) issued eight hits, three runs (2 ER) and two bb in seven innings.

The Tenerife Marlins lost another game in the race for the championship, splitting against Baseball Navarra. In game one Navarra prevailed 7-6 in ten innings thanks to RBIs by Victor Martinez and Hector Perozo in the first extra innings. Puerto Cruz tried to come back in the bottom of the frame, but managed only a RBI double by Dewis Navarro. Perozo, Luis Villanueva and Adolfo Gonzalez hit homeruns for the team from Pamplona. Navarro combined with Nestor Perez for four RBI. Perozo (W 1-5) also picked up the win in relief, Yoel Hernandez (L 6-3) took the loss.

In the second portion of the doubleheader, Eric Gonzalez (W 2-1) pitched a gem, allowing two hits and three walks in a seven-inning 10-0 shutout. He struck out eight. Richard Montiel reached base four time, including through a homerun. He also doubled and drove in two. Yorking Cespedes (L 2-3) issued seven hits, six runs (4 ER) and three bb in 3 2/3 frames.

CB Viladecans dispatched the Sevilla Red Sox easily on the road, scoring 37 runs in the doubleheader, while allowing just one. Viladecans remains in fifth place, while Sevilla sits in tenth.

In the Spanish Division de Honor the FC Barcelona is cruising towards the championship. In week twelve they swept a two-game series against CD Pamplona to improve to 22-2. Two of the runner ups in the standings took a hit this weekend. On Saturday the Tenerife Marlins had to settle for the split against Baseball Navarra, losing game one in twelve innings. One day later the Astros Valencia only were able to win one game against Halcones de Vigo. In the second match Vigo prevailed 2-1 in six innings thanks to a rain-filled early ending. Meanwhile defending champion CB Sant Boi remains in the race with two victories over San Inazio Bilbao. CB Viladecans also won twice.

The Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz will take on Baseball Navarra in a doubleheader in the Spanish Division de Honor on Saturday. While the Marlins are sitting in third place in the standings four games behind leader FC Barcelona, 2011 isn’t the year of Navarra. Last year one of the top four teams in the league, they have dropped to eighth with a 6-16 record.
