KNBSB hands out 2011 Awards in Baseball and Softball

Besides the big party to celebrate the 2011 Baseball World Champions, the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association also handed outthe official awards, honoring the best players in Baseball and Softball competitions in the Netherlands.

Sparks Haarlem wins 2011 Holland Series Softball

With the IBAF Baseball World Cup getting most of our attention, we now take a look back at the decisions in some of the European Softball Leagues.

Sparks Haarlem has won the 2011 championship in the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball. They swept the best-of-five Holland Series 3-0 against Iber Lengua Terrasvogels to clinch the title. Sparks had reached the finals with a three-game sweep over local rivals Olympia Haarlem. Terrasvogels defeated Alcmaria Victrix in the semis.

Just three games were played in the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball last week. On Thursday the Tex Town Tigers took away a 9-0 shutout from the Centrals. The Tigers still remain in seventh place in the standings, but have closed the gap towards the team in front of them. On Sunday Iber Lengua Terrasvogels celebrated two wins over the Dutch Juniors. They are now 16-4, still in second.

In the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball leader Sparks Haarlem improved to 19-1 with four wins last weekend. On Saturday Sparks beat the third-ranked Alcmaria Victrix twice, outscoring them 18-2 in the doubleheader. One day later the Haarlem shut out the Dutch Juniors in both ends of a twin bill. Olympia Haarlem celebrated a sweep over the Twins on Saturday and got swept by Alcmaria on Sunday.

Co-Coaches Michael Bastian & Monti VanBrunt to lead team during European Champions Cup

June 13, 2011--The Tex Town Tigers Softball Team out of Enschede, the Netherlands has announced that they have retained The Fastpitch School to guide their women’s team through the European Champions Cup which will be hosted by DES Caserta (near Naples) in Italy August 15-20. Coach VanBrunt and Coach Bastian will serve as Co-Coaches for this event. They will make a coaching plan and strategy together in hopes of retaining the Cup. The Cup will feature 10 teams from 9 European countries. The Tex Town Tigers are the current Cup holders.

“Our club is really pleased with the help and are really excited to have coaches with the experience and expertise will join us in Italy!” said Tim Oosterveld.

Coach VanBrunt led TTT to their first ever national title in 2008 in his second year with the team. He then coached against TTT in the 2009 Cup which was also in Italy as he was the head coach of Italian Team Legnano. Coach Bastian and Coach VanBrunt have vast international coaching experience together. Coach Bastian guided the Chinese National Team to a 4th place finish in the 2006 ISF Women’s World Championships, with Coach VanBrunt assisting him during the elite level event.

Iber Lengua Terrasvogels remains in second after sweeping the Centrals on the road. Alcmaria Victrix won three of its four games against the Twins and Dutch Juniors to follow in third.

International Softball Tournament in Namur, Belgium

On June 11 and 12 the Namur Angels organize an international softball tournament. On hand will be the national teams from France and Belgium plus All-Star teams from Belgium and the Netherlands. Additionally the national team from Indonesia was supposed to come, but withdraw from the competition shortly before the start of the tournament. Check LFBBS.be for a complete schedule.

In the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball the Tex Town Tigers improved their record from 1-11 to 4-12 this weekend. On Saturday they stunned the second-ranked Iber Lengua Terrasvogels with a split. One day later they swept a doubleheader against the Dutch Juniors. With the three wins the Tigers move into seventh place in the standings, closing the gap towards the Centrals and Twins in fifth and sixth. At the top Terrasvogels missed out on the opportunity to cut the deficit to leader Sparks Haarlem, which had an off weekend.

In the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball the top teams had a successful weekend. Iber Lengua Terrasvogels defeated the Twins 3-1 and 9-0, while Sparks Haarlem crushed the Centrals 10-2 and 15-2. Also on Saturday Olympia Haarlem beat the Tex Town Tigers 4-0 and 5-1. However one day later Olympia had to settle for a split against the Dutch Juniors. After a lopsided 10-0 shutout in game one, the Juniors celebrated a 3-2 win, their second this season.

In the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball Sparks Haarlem suffered its first loss of the season, as Iber Lengua Terrasvogels ended the streak of the first-ranked team after ten games with a win in game one of their doubleheader on Saturday. In game two Haarlem returned to the winning lane and solidified first place.

On Saturday Sparks Haarlem defeated the Alcmaria Victrix twice and the Centrals took home a sweep from the Tex Town Tigers. On Monday Sparks also celebrated two wins on the home field of the Tigers, while Alcmaria defeated the Dutch Juniors.

Each team won three games and they are tied at the top of the standings after opening weekend. Additionally Olympia Haarlem and Alcmaria Victrix split a doubleheader. Sparks Haarlem and the Dutch Juniors will enter competition on Easter Weekend.

The Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) revealed the award winners of the 2010 season in Baseball and Softball. During the New Year reception in Nieuwegein on Saturday, Bryan Engelhardt of Corendon Kinheim was the big winner, taking away the MVP trophy and the awards for the most homeruns and most stolen bases.

Berend Mannessen takes over as Head Coach of Softball Team at UVV

Earlier this week the Dutch Baseball and Softball Club UVV in Utrecht announced that Berend Mannessen is taking over as head coach of the Women’s Softball Team, which finished in fourth place in the so-called Overgangsklasse, the second division in Netherlands Softball, with a 16-1-19 record. Mannessen is coming from the Haarlem-based DSS, where he was at the helm in the past two years and where he was named Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading them back into the Hoofdklasse. UVV also confirmed assistant and pitching coach Marcel Drent as well as team manager Monique Burger.

Mr. KNBSB Rinus Paardekooper passes away

Last Sunday Rinus Paardekooper died at the age of 62. In a close circle ceremony prior to any publicity he was taken leave on Wednesday. In an organization of fast rotating KNBSB board members and chairmen, Rinus in the federation office was a reliable collaborator for clubs, technical officials outside and colleagues in the office. He started in the sixties as an umpire for baseball and softball. He became a volunteer co-worker in the federation office in Amsterdam, moved with the office to Santpoort near Haarlem and also to Nieuwegein. 30 years ago he got his full time appointment and five years ago he got the KNBSB Recognition Award, the first employee within KNBSB. From 1979 till 2008 Rinus was competition manager. He was technical commissioner at World Port Tournament and Haarlemse Honkbal Week. He was also a promoter of baseball material supplies to East European countries.

KNBSB names Tjerk Smeets Marketing Manager

On Thursday the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) announced that Tjerk Smeets will serve as marketing manager, starting November 1st. The 30-year-old ended his active career at the end of the 2010 season, having won the Hoofdklasse title with Corendon Kinheim in 2006 and 2007, as well as the European Championship with the Dutch National Team in 2005 and 2007. The former catcher still is going to coach the RCH Pinguins next year.

Since this year Smeets is also part of the coaching staff of the Dutch National Team and will accompany the team during the upcoming Intercontinental Cup in Taiwan. He studied International Sports Marketing at the Johan Cruyff University, where he graduated in 2005. Afterwards he worked as European Marketing Coordinator for Under Armour. In his position as marketing manager he is supposed to find new sponsors and partners for the Dutch Baseball and Softball programs.

Sparks Haarlem has won the 2010 title in the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball. They celebrated an 8-2 victory over defending champion Tex Town Tigers in the decisive game five of the Holland Series on Sunday afternoon. After four thrilling matches before, this one was over at the end of the opening frame.

The first six batters of Sparks reached base and seven runners total scored in the first to decide things quickly. Tex Town was able to avoid the shutout afterwards, but two runs were too little to initiate a comeback. Chantal Versluis led the Haarlem offense with three hits, a run and a RBI. Eight different players crossed the plate. Nadine Marinus went 2-for-3 with a RBI for the Tigers.

Dagmar Bloeming (W 2-2) got the win, allowing five hits and two runs in seven solid innings. She struck out four and finished the Holland Series with an ERA of 0.94 in four appearances. Ginger de Weert (L 0-1) got the starting nod for the guests from Enschede, but only stood in the circle for four batters, issuing four runs on four hits to take the loss. Lindsey Meadows wasn’t able to stop the bleeding in relief, allowing four more runs (1 ER) on seven hits and six bb in six innings. She struck out seven.

Defending champion Tex Town Tigers has forced a decisive game five in the 2010 Holland Series after defeating Sparks Haarlem 4-3 in eight innings on Saturday. A walk-off RBI double by Merel Oosterveld in the bottom of the first extra inning sealed the win for the Tigers.

Earlier in the game Tex Town overcame a 1-3-deficit to deny a Sparks celebration in Enschede. A RBI double by Lindsey Meadows tied the contest in the bottom of the sixth. Karin Tuk (TTT) and Nathalie Gosewehr (SPH) hit solo homeruns.

Meadows (W) went the distance in the circle, allowing seven hits, three runs (1 ER) and two walks in eight innings, while striking out nine. Dagmar Bloeming (L) took the loss in relief of Kirsten Scheele, who had issued three runs (2 ER) on four hits in 5 2/3 frames. Game five will be played on Sunday afternoon in Haarlem.

Regular season winner Sparks Haarlem has tied the best-of-five title series, winning game two of the Holland Series 6-2 against defending champion Tex Town Tigers. Two runs in the top of the fifth and four in the sixth put Sparks on the board. The Tigers only were able to avoid the shutout by scoring twice in the seventh. Kim Kluijskens went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Areke Spel crossed the plate twice. Kirsten Scheele (W) allowed just three hits, two runs and two bb in seven innings. Lindsey Meadows (L) was charged with the loss after conceding eight hits, six runs (3 ER) and two bb in six innings.

The lone run crossed the plate in the top of the sixth, when Meike Witteveen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Otherwise pitching dominated. Lindsey Meadows (W 1-0) struck out twelve in seven scoreless innings for the win. She allowed just four hits and a walk. Haarlem needed a 5-3 victory in game five on Sunday against the Centrals to reach the championship series in Dutch Softball. The Tigers eliminated Iber Lengua Terrasvogels in four games in the semi-finals after a 3-2 win on Saturday.

Dutch Softball Semis: Sparks Haarlem, Tex Town Tigers in Front

In the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball, the semi-final series started last weekend. Sparks Haarlem and the Tex Town Tigers are up 2-1 after the first three games of the best-of-five series. Haarlem surprisingly lost the opener to the Centrals by a score of 2-3 after Lisa Sweeney’s gem, but came back to win game two 11-1 and game three 7-5. Kim Kluijskens, Areke Spel and Debby Connor set the highlights with homeruns in the two victories.

In the second semi-final the Tex Town Tigers and Iber Lengua Terrasvogels are locked into close pitcher’s duels. In game one the Tigers prevailed 1-0 when Lindsey Meadows (7 IP, 3 H, 13 SO) out-dueled Aimee Murch (7 IP, 4 H, R, 8 SO). Merel Oosterveld drove in the lone run with a RBI double in the fifth. Oosterveld scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh of a 2-1 victory in game two, as Meadows again went the distance for the win. Terrasvogels avoided the sweep in game three behind a complete game shutout of Femke van Dusschoten, who allowed just three hits and two walks through seven innings.

The Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) used the long weekend to schedule a Softball Happening at the facilities of Olympia Haarlem. All nine teams in the Dutch Hoofdklasse played their regular game day in Haarlem. On Saturday the Tex Town Tigers, Sparks Haarlem, Olympia Haarlem and Iber Lengua Terrasvogels celebrated sweeps in their doubleheaders. On Sunday games between the Dutch National Team and a squad of foreign all-stars went on. The Softball Happening was closed out on Monday with a 12-0 shutout by Olympia Haarlem over the Dutch Juniors.

Results Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball May 13 to 16

There is a new leader in the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball after last weekend’s action. Sparks Haarlem swept its doubleheader with the Tex Town Tigers and moved into first place with a 13-1 record, followed by the Tigers, which are 14-2.

In game one Haarlem needed just a two-run homerun by Kim Kluijskens in the top of the opening frame to win 2-1. Dagmar Bloeming out-dueled Lindsey Meadows on the mound. In the second match Sparks overcame an early 1-3 deficit en route to a 4-3 victory. Nathalie Gosewehr drove in the winning run with a double in the sixth. Karin Tuk drove in two for the Tigers.

The Dutch Hoofdklasse resumes next weekend with a big Softball happening in Haarlem, as all scheduled doubleheaders will be played at the fields of Olympia Haarlem as part of a four-day event. Additionally the Dutch National Team will face an all-star squad of the foreign players in the league on Sunday.

DSS – Iber Lengua Terrasvogels 0-5, 1-4

Iber Lengua improved to 7-3 in the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball standings with a pair of road wins in Haarlem. In game one Aimee Murch struck out 14 in seven scoreless three-hit innings to lead Terrasvogels to a 5-0 shutout. Kaitlyn Gentile set the highlight at the plate with a two-run homerun in the seventh. In the second match Iber Lengua broke a 1-1 tie with a bases loaded walk by Marielle Vleugels in the fourth. She went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI overall. DSS had the tying run at the plate with no outs and the bases loaded with one out, but a double play ended the rally without putting anything on the board.

Sparks Haarlem – Twins 7-0 (5), 7-6

Sparks won its sixth and seventh game of the season against the Twins to solidify second place. In the first part of the twin bill Dagmar Bloeming issued just two hits in five scoreless innings to lead her team to a 7-0 shutout. Marloes Fellinger and Debby Connor both went 3-for-3 with a combined three doubles, two runs scored and four RBI. In the second match a sac fly by Judith Diepeveen and a pair of RBI singles by Nathalie Gosewehr and Chantal Versluis in the bottom of the sixth put Haarlem ahead 7-4. The Twins threatened to come back in the seventh, when Fabienne van Uden and Andrea Lindgren drove in two to cut the deficit to a run. But a strikeout sealed the win for Sparks with runners on second and third. Lyanne Horeman hit a three-run homerun for Haarlem earlier in the game.

Olympia Haarlem – Euro Stars 5-4, 0-10

The third doubleheader on the day also was played in Haarlem. Olympia had to settle for a split at home against the Euro Stars. In the first game Maranca Ham drove in the winning run with a single in the sixth to seal a 5-4 win for the hosts. One frame earlier Olympia had tied the contest on a two-run single by Rebecca Duindam. In game two Daisy Verstappen allowed just three hits and two walks in six scoreless innings to lead the Euro Stars to a 10-0 shutout in six innings. Davinia de Kwant, who already had driven in two in game one, went 2-for-4 with a triple, a double and three RBI.

The doubleheader between the Text Town Tigers and the Centrals, as well as the matchup between the Euro Stars and the Dutch Juniors were postponed due to rain.

Twins – DSS 5-0, 3-1

Thanks to two solid pitching performances by Andrea Lindgren the Twins beat DSS in both ends of their Saturday doubleheader in the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball. In game one she struck out twelve in seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two walks to lead the Twins to a 5-0 shutout. She also scored two of the five runs. In the second match she only gave up a run on five hits in seven innings in a 3-1 win. However DSS led until the bottom of the sixth, when the Twins put three runs on the board to seal the victory.

Centrals – Sparks Haarlem 0-5, 1-3

Haarlem won both games on the road against the Centrals. In the first game Dagmar Bloeming issued just one hit and two walks in seven scoreless innings in a 5-0 shutout. In the second part of the twin bill Kirsten Scheele struck out ten in seven strong innings in a 3-1 win. He gave up just an unearned run on five hits and a bb. Kim Kluijskens went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Olympia Haarlem – Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers 0-11 (4), 2-10 (6)

The Tex Town Tigers swept the doubleheader in Haarlem by out-scoring Olympia 21-2. In game one Lindsey Meadows was perfect through twelve innings, while the offense put eleven runs on the board. Nadine Marinus led the way with a pair of doubles and three RBI. In the second game they scored six runs in the sixth en route to a 10-2 win. Karin Tuk had two hits and four RBI in the rout.

Iber Lengua Terrasvogels – Euro Stars 6-3, 3-1

Terrasvogels picked up both wins in their two-game set with the Euro Stars. In the first game they took an early 6-0 lead after the second on their way to a 6-3 win. Kaitlyn Gentile drove in three overall, including two with a triple during a five-run rally in the second. Aimee Murch struck out ten in seven innings for the win. In the second game Femke van Dusschoten surrendered just two hits, an unearned run and five bb in seven innings to lead Iber Lengua to a 3-1 victory. She struck out eight. Gentile put her team in front with a two-run double in the third.

Dutch Juniors – Iber Lengua Terrasvogels 4-6, 0-12 (5)

On Sunday Terrasvogels added two more wins to its record with a sweep against the Junior National Team, which is playing in the Hoofdklasse this season. In game one Iber Lengua had to overcome a 2-4-deficit on its way to a 6-4 win. Femke van Dusschoten struck out ten in 5 1/3 innings of one-hit relief to pick up the win. In the second match Terrasvogels scored all twelve runs in a 12-0 shutout in the last two frames of a five-inning win. Aimee Murch gave up two hits and a walk in five scoreless innings for the win.

DSS and the Euro Stars settled for a split in week two of the Dutch Softball Hoofdklasse last Saturday. In game one Sonja Pannen allowed just three hits in six scoreless innings to lead DSS to a 7-0 shutout. She struck out eight. Amanda Hess doubled twice and drove in two. In the second game the Euro Stars overcame a 1-5-deficit with five runs in the last two frames en route to a 6-5 win. Anouk van den Heuvel had the game-winning hit with a two-run double in the top of the seventh.

Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers – Iber Lengua Terrasvogels 1-0, 1-0

The Tex Town Tigers swept the twin bill against Terrasvogels with a pair of 1-0 shutouts. In game one Lindsey Meadows struck out 14 in seven two-hit innings to win the pitcher’s duel against Aimee Murch, who had ten Ks in 6 2/3 innings. Karin Tuk drove in the lone run of the game with a walk-off RBI single in the seventh. In the second game Martina Lackner and Meadows combined to allow just one hit and two walks, while this time Virginie Anneveld drove in the winning run with a walk-off single in the seventh. Murch again was charged with the loss.

Sparks Haarlem – Olympia Haarlem 15-0 (3), 4-1

Sparks won swept the doubleheader in Haarlem against local rivals Olympia. In game one they scored a whopping 13 runs in the second inning en route to 15-0 rout. Chantal Versluis drove in four. Noemi Boekel crossed the plate three times. A two-run homerun by Versluis in the fifth put Sparks ahead in the second game, a 4-1 win. Kirsten Scheele struck out seven in seven solid innings for the win.

Twins – Centrals 7-2, 7-9 (9)

The Twins scored seven runs in each game against the Centrals, but still had to settle for a split. In game one they won by a score of 7-2, as Fabienne van Uden and Lieke Duffhues went a combined 6-for-8 with four runs scored and five RBI. The second part of the twin bill was decided in extra innings. Three runs in the top of the ninth helped the Centrals to a 9-7 win. Anne Blaaugweersa, Kimberly van den Lee and Silea Bos scored two runs apiece for the guests.

Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers – Dutch Juniors 5-0, 5-4

On Sunday the Tex Town Tigers faced the Junior National Team and won both games. Martin Lackner went seven innings, allowing six hits and two walks to lead Computer SOS to a 5-0 shutout in game one. Petra van Heijst drove in two. In the second game the reigning champion needed a walk-off RBI single by Van Heijst in the bottom of the seventh to prevail 5-4. Merel Oosterveld had three hits and three RBI for TTT.

Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball starts into 2010 Season

In the Netherlands the Hoofdklasse Softball started into the 2010 season last weekend. Similar to the Hoofdklasse Baseball the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association has launched a stats website; where you can follow the action live via play by play. The league also features two specialties this year.

One, the Junior National Team will be the ninth team in the Hoofdklasse, so they can get perfect a preparation for the Junior Championship in Vienna from July 25 to 31. Players on the team still are allowed to play for their club teams, but now get additionally playing time with the national team.

Second, on the weekend of May 21 to 24, all four regular doubleheaders of a game day will be played at one site during a Softball Happening in Haarlem. Additionally the Dutch National Team and Junior National Team will play games too.

Results April 11:

Centrals – DSS 0-2, 3-1

Sonja Pannen allowed just one hit and two walks in seven scoreless innings to lead DSS to a 2-0 shutout over the Centrals in game one of their doubleheader on Saturday. The two runs were scored on a RBI double by Julie Owen and a RBI single by Amanda Hess in the third. Molly Yetman struck out eleven in seven innings in the loss. Olympia Haarlem – Twins 5-1, 3-5

Haarlem and the Twins also settled for a split. Olympia broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fourth to win game one 5-1. Courtney Lyons had a two-run single during the rally. She also got the win on the mound, issuing one unearned run on five hits and four walks in seven innings. In the second game the Twins scored four runs in the third on their way to a 5-3 win. Daisy de Peinder and Sandra Catoen highlighted the frame with a two-run triple and RBI double.

Iber Lengua Terrasvogels – Sparks Haarlem 1-0, 6-8 (8)

Aimee Murch allowed just seven hits in seven scoreless innings to lead Terrasvogels to a 1-0 win in game one of their doubleheader against Sparks. Femke Haage scored the lone run on a RBI single by Christina Rolla in the third. In the second match Haarlem scored five runs in the first extra inning opposed to the three by Iber Lengua and won 8-6. Kim Kluijskens went 4-for-4 for Sparks, while Judith Diepeveen had a three-run single in the eighth. Noemi Boekel hit a solo homerun.

Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers – Euro Stars 4-0, 4-2

Defending champion Tex Town Tigers opened the season with two wins over the Euro Stars. Lindsey Meadows struck out ten batters in seven scoreless innings, while allowing just two hits and two walks to lead Computer SOS to a 4-0 shutout in game one. In the second game four runs in the sixth were enough to beat the Euro Stars 4-2. This time Meadows drove in two with a single. Martina Lackner picked up the win with three solid innings of relief.

Junior National Team – Centrals 1-3, 2-12 (5)

The Centrals improved to 3-1 for the season thanks to two wins over the Juniors in their Hoofdklasse debut. Molly Yetman allowed one unearned run on five hits and a walk in seven innings to lead the Centrals to a 3-1 victory in game one. Kimberly van der Lee drove in two, while Anne Blaauwgeers scored twice. The second part of the twin bill turned out to be a 12-2 win for the Centrals, highlighted by a seven-run third. Anne Blaauwgeers scored three times. Lotte Holvast drove in three.

Bob Bergkamp new President of Dutch Federation

The Dutch Baseball and Softball Federation (KNBSB) has elected the former umpire Bob Bergkamp as new president at a KNBSB meeting in Nieuwegein according to Honkbalsite.com. He succeeds Ruud van Zetten, who resigned together with other board members at the beginning of November due to a conflict with the appeal board.

Bergkamp will be joined at the top of the federation by Frits Mulder, Caroline Theunissen, Ruurd Koopmans and Marcel Visser. Two more board members will be named later, including the treasurer. An interim committee of Mulder, Hans Zonneveld and Leo Turret had led the KNBSB since Van Zetten stepped down.

The 54-year-old Bergkamp was a pitcher during a seven-year active career with the Haarlem-based club DSS. He was an Umpire in the Dutch Hoofdklasse between 1988 and 1996, winning Umpire of the year awards in 1993 and 1994. He also umpired internationally for eight years. Since 2007 he has been working in the city government of Breda. Within the KNBSB he was an alternate member of the appeal committee since March 2009.

For the first time in the history of Dutch Softball all four scheduled doubleheader of a regular Hoofdklasse game day will be played at one site on one day. Olympia Haarlem will host the so-called 2010 Softball Happening from May 21st to 24th.

During this event the aforementioned four matchups will be played on the two Haarlem fields on Saturday. One day later the Dutch Softball National Team will face a Foreign All Star Team followed by a Homerun Derby. On Monday the Dutch Junior Softball Team will take on Olympia Haarlem.

Kaitlyn Gentile leaves Nuoro for Terrasvogels

According to the NOS Videotext catcher Kaitlyn Gentile will leave the Italian Softball League club Museo D’Arte Nuoro to join the Dutch club Iber Lengua Terrasvogels for the upcoming season. The Hoofdklasse team also confirmed extensions for pitcher Aimee Murch and second baseman Christina Rolla.

Gentile had a .213 batting average (OBP .270/SLG .350) with two homeruns, five doubles, eight runs scored and twelve RBI in 28 games in Italy last year. She also was teammate of Rolla during the European Softball Championship in Valencia, when Italy finished in sixth place with a 3-4 overall record.

Rolla batted .418 (OBP .518/SLG .714) with three homeruns, four triples, ten doubles, 20 runs scored and 25 RBI in 32 games in her first season in the Netherlands. Murch had a 16-5 record with an ERA of 1.09 in 25 games (18 starts) in 2009. She struck out 143 in 134 1/3 innings, walking 31.

KNBSB hands out 2009 Star Awards in Baseball and Softball

On Saturday afternoon the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Federation (KNBSB) came together for the 2009 Stars Awards Gala and 2010 New Year Reception at the House of Sports in Nieuwegein. The Canadian Ryan Murphy of vice champion Konica Minolta Pioniers was the big winner, receiving the MVP award and the best pitcher trophy. He batted .312 (OBP .404/SLG .420) with two homeruns, 21 runs scored and 30 RBI in 42 games. He also had a 10-2 record with an ERA of 0.89 and 104 strikeouts (15 walks) in 110 2/3 innings. It was his third season in the Dutch Hoofdklasse. Eugene Kingsale (DOOR Neptunus) and Danny Rombley (Corendon Kinheim) were second and third in the MVP voting.

2009 champion DOOR Neptunus got honored twice. Steve Janssen was named Coach of the Year. Benjamin Dille received the MVP-award for the Holland Series. Murphy’s teammate with the Pioniers, Jefferson Muzo, got the trophy for the most stolen bases (23). Corendon Kinheim also had two winners with Bryan Engelhardt (Most Homeruns, 8 ) and future New York Met Björn Hato (best young player). Kenny Berkenbosch of L&D Amsterdam was the best batter with a .402 batting average. Sharlon Schoop of the San Francisco Giants was named most talented Under-23 national team player. Jim Ploeger of Almere’90 was the best junior pitcher. The father of Florida Marlins’ starting pitcher Rick van den Hurk, Wim van den Hurk, got honored for Bixie Baseball, his Baseball Academy in the Netherlands.

In the Softball department 2009 champion Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers, Sparks Haarlem and Euro Stars combined to receive seven of the nine awards. Marloes Fellinger (Sparks Haarlem) was named Most Valuable Player and Homerun Queen. She batted .420 (OBP .500/SLG .700) with five homeruns, 31 runs scored and 28 RBI in 35 games. Her teammate Saskia Kosterink had the most stolen bases (18) in 2009. Aimee Murch (16-5, ERA 1.09, 134.1 IP, 143 SO, 31 BB) of Iber Lingua Terrasvogels was named best pitcher, Mackenzie Smith (AVG .447) of the Euro Stars best batter. Tigers players Virginie Anneveld and Ginger de Weert got honored as best national team player, respective best young pitcher. Kim Donkers (Euro Stars) was named most talented player of the year. Coach of the year was Berend Mannessen (DSS).

New Coaches needed for top Softball Teams in Netherlands

The two top teams in the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball will make changes at the top of the coaching staff for the 2010 season. The Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers, which won the championship in the past two years, will need a new head coach for the second straight season. According to a report by Marco Stoovelaar on his website, Kaleo Eldredge and the Tex Town Tigers have parted ways. She had replaced Monti van Brunt following the 2008 season, who moved to Italy to join AMGA Legnano. Van Brunt recently returned to the club, but will serve as head coach of the Baseball team.

2009 runner up Iber Lengua Terrasvogels also will have a new head coach in 2010. The former member of the Dutch National Team (Baseball) Jeroen Deken is going to follow Leigh Podlesny at the helm of the coaching staff. The 40-year-old played his last game in the Hoofdklasse in 2005. According to Marco Stoovelaar pitcher Aimee Murch and infielder Christina Rolla are expected to return next year.

Dutch Softball: DSS and Olympia Haarlem back in Hoofdklasse

The field for the 2010 Softball season in the Dutch Hoofdklasse is set. Already on September 27th Olympia Haarlem shut out the Gryphons 7-0 to win the best-of-five promotion/relegation series 3-2 and to return to the highest level in the Netherlands.

Haarlem qualified for the series by finishing in second place in the First Division behind DSS, which also receives the promotion to the Hoofdklasse. DSS replaces Robur’58, which got relegated due to an eighth-place finish in 2009.

Olympia got relegated after the 2008 season, ending a streak of 19 consecutive years in the Hoofdklasse. DSS last played in the Dutch Major League 24 years ago. The two teams will join 2009 champion Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers, Iber Lengua Terrasvogels, Sparks Haarlem, Euro Stars, Twins and Centrals in the 2010 campaign.

Tex Town Tigers Dutch Softball Champion 2009

The COMPUTER SOS TEX TOWN TIGERS have defended their title in the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball. They completed the sweep in the best-of-five championship series this weekend with two more shutouts against IBER LENGUA TERRASVOGELS. Lindsey Meadows pitched in all three games of the Holland Series and received the MVP Award. She only allowed one hit in the last twelve innings of the finals and didn’t give up a single run in the whole series.

On Saturday the TIGERS won by a final score of 2-0 thanks to two runs in the fourth on a sac bunt by Petra van Heijst and a RBI single by Karin Tuk. Lindsey Meadows (W 2-0) issued only one hit and three walks in seven scoreless innings. She struck out eight. Aimee Murch (L 0-2) surrendered two runs on five hits and a bb going the distance. She collected seven strikeouts.

Her teammates provided Meadows with an early 5-0 cushion after the opening period. Virginie Anneveld led the offense with three hits, two doubles, three runs and three RBI in three at-bats. Merel Oosterveld and Meadows scored two runs apiece. Aimee Murch (L 0-3) took the loss after five hits, five runs and a walk in the first inning. She was replaced by Femke van Dusschoten in the second.

Dutch Softball: Terrasvogels und Tex Town Tigers reach Holland Series

Defending champion Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers and Iber Lengua Terrasvogels have reached the Holland Series and will battle for the title in Dutch Women Softball. Game one of the best-of-five series is scheduled for Thursday evening in Enschede. Both teams had swept their semi-final series the past weekend.

The Tigers received three strong pitching efforts by Lindsey Meadows, who struck out 18 batters in twelve innings, picking up all three victories against the Euro Stars. Terrasvogels used the same tactic, sending out Aimee Murch to lead them to three wins over Sparks Haarlem. One difference to Meadows, Murch went the distance in all three games.

The regular season in the Softball Hoofdklasse in the Netherlands ended last weekend with defending champion COMPUTER SOS TEX TOWN TIGERS taking first place with a 28-7 record, one game in front of IBER LENGUA TERRASVOGELS. Both teams will have home field advantage, going into the best-of-five semi-final series, which will begin on Thursday evening. The TEX TOWN TIGERS face the EURO STARS, while TERRASVOGELS battles with SPARKS HAARLEM.

TERRASVOGELS is back in sole position of first place in the Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball. Since our last update the team is undefeated in five games and profited also from two losses by the TEX TOWN TIGERS, which dropped to two games back. The GRYPHONS and SPARKS HAARLEM follow in third and fourth.

The National Team continued its Holland Tour and celebrated two wins over the GRYPHONS (2-0, 16-1) on May 17, two wins over the Junior National Team (6-0, 7-1) on May 20 and two victories against the TWINS (4-2, 8-2). Results Dutch Hoofdklasse Softball May 9

The defending Softball Hoofdklasse champion Tex Town Tigers defeated Terrasvogels twice last Saturday and moved into a tie for first place. In game one Lindsey Meadows excelled with seven innings of one-hit ball, leading the Tigers to a 1-0 win. She struck out five. In the second match she again picked up the win, her sixth of the season, striking out ten in six four-hit, two-walk innings. Sparks Haarlem solidified third place with a sweep over the Euro Stars.

Besides the league action, the Women National Team made their annual Holland tour and played six games between May 3rd and May 10th. On their first stop they defeated the Euro Stars 7-3 and 8-2. A few days later they met with the Junior National Team and won by scores of 7-0 and 12-1. They added two more wins on Sunday against the Centrals (13-1, 11-1). Since our last update on the Dutch Softball Hoofdklasse TERRASVOGELS has lost one game, but remains at the top of the standings with a 9-1 record. Last year’s champion TEX TOWN TIGERS has moved into second place with seven wins in ten games. Both clubs will meet next Saturday to battle for first in the Netherlands.
