German Softball-Bundesliga under way
One week after the Baseball-Bundesliga the Softball-Bundesliga in Germany opened its gates to the 2010 season. Five teams in the northern division and eight in the south will battle for wins during the regular season, trying to qualify for one of the four playoff spots in each division.
In the north the Neunkirchen Nightmares and the Wesseling Vermins started with two wins apiece against the Holm Westend 69ers. Already on Saturday the Vermins beat Holm 11-0 and 9-2 to complete the sweep. One day later the Nightmares won game one 9-2 against the 69ers after scoring five runs in the second. Veronica Skalicka issued just two hits in five scoreless innings in the second part of the doubleheader to lead Neunkirchen to a 7-0 shutout. Arlene Quinn and Marion Berg collected four hits each on the day.
In the south the Herrenberg Wanderers led by Sabrina Wunder, who got five hits in five RBI, celebrated a sweep over the Heidelberg Hedgehogs to open the season on Saturday. Defending champion Mannheim Tornados picked up 11-2 and 11-1 victories against the Laufer Woelfe one day later. Jutta Lehmeyer set the highlight with an inside-the-park homerun in game two. Also on Sunday the Augsburg Dirty Slugs settled for a split against the Darmstadt Rockets, as well as the Karlsruhe Cougars versus the Haar Disciples.
