Other crucial dates in German Baseball and Softball are the opening days for the Baseball-Bundesliga on March 31 and the Softball-Bundesliga on April 21. The regular season ends on July 1st in Baseball, respective August 19 in Softball. Due to the European Championship in September the German baseball champion will be known by August 25.

A major format change will be done for the Softball-Bundesliga playoffs as the final four apparently will be eliminated and replaced with a championship series. Additionally it seems that a Coppa Italia like Cup tournament will be played between the eliminated teams.

2012 Calendar German Baseball and Softball

The Mannheim Tornados won the 2011 championship in the Softball-Bundesliga. They defeated the Neunkirchen Nightmares 9-5 in the title game at the Final Four in Ratingen. Mannheim had won all three preliminary round games at the tournament to reach the championship game. The Nightmares had to take down defending champion Wesseling Vermins in the semi-final.

In the south the Gruenwald Jesters and the Gauting Indians are the new teams in the league, taking the spots of the Herrenberg Wanderers, Laufer Woelfe and Augsburg Dirty Slugs. Together with the Mannheim Tornados, Karlsruhe Cougars, Haar Disciples and Darmstadt Rockets seven teams fight for the four playoff spots this season. On the first weekend Mannheim and Karlsruhe celebrated sweeps, while the Jesters and Heidelberg split wins.

The Vermins had reached the championship game after finishing the preliminary round with two wins and one loss in first place. The Tornados were in second and had to beat the Neunkirchen Nightmares 6-4 on Sunday morning to reach the final. The Brauweiler Raging Abbots, which were the lone team to win against Wesseling at the Final Four, finished in fourth. Claudia Volkmann of the Vermins, who pitched six innings in relief in the final, picked up the trophy as the most valuable player. Jutta Lehmeyer of the Tornados was named best pitcher with an ERA of 0.48 in 14 2/3 innings. Arlene Quinn of the Nightmares received the best batter award.

Defending champion Mannheim Tornados shut out the Hamburg Knights 8-0 in five innings to win the series 3-0. The Brauweiler Raging Abbots picked up a 4-0 shutout on the road against the Haar Disciples for another sweep. Additionally the Wesseling Vermins out-slugged the Karlsruhe Cougars 8-5.

The fourth matchup unfortunately already was decided before the start of the third game, as the Herrenberg Wanderers had to forfeit since they only traveled to the Neunkirchen Nightmares with nine players and Danielle Kinley stepped on a ball during warm-ups.

In game one the Disciples came out firing, scoring four runs leading off the game. But Mannheim struck back right away with five runs in the bottom of the frame. They extended the lead to 8-4 after four innings until Haar tried to come back, but only was able to cut the deficit to 6-8. In the second match the Tornados had the better start and took an early 4-0 lead through three innings en route to a 5-2 win.

The Karlsruhe Cougars took advantage of the two Haar losses and moved into second place after a sweep in Darmstadt. They are going to get their shot of stopping Mannheim, when the league resumes play on May 30th. In the north the Neunkirchen Nightmares swept their doubleheader against the Holm Westend 69ers and moved into a tie for first place in the standings, as the Wesseling Vermins had a bye.

In the southern division the three top teams continued their winning ways. The Mannheim Tornados improved to 8-0 with a sweep in Heidelberg against the Hedgehogs. The Haar Disciples picked up wins number six and seventh of the season by scoring 13 runs in each of the two games against the Herrenberg Wanderers. The Karlsruhe Cougars remain tied with Haar in the standings after defeating the Augsburg Dirty Slugs twice.

Veronica Skalicka issued just two hits in five scoreless innings in the second part of the doubleheader to lead Neunkirchen to a 7-0 shutout. Arlene Quinn and Marion Berg collected four hits each on the day.

In the south the Herrenberg Wanderers led by Sabrina Wunder, who got five hits in five RBI, celebrated a sweep over the Heidelberg Hedgehogs to open the season on Saturday. Defending champion Mannheim Tornados picked up 11-2 and 11-1 victories against the Laufer Woelfe one day later. Jutta Lehmeyer set the highlight with an inside-the-park homerun in game two. Also on Sunday the Augsburg Dirty Slugs settled for a split against the Darmstadt Rockets, as well as the Karlsruhe Cougars versus the Haar Disciples.

The 26-year-old Eldredge is an outfielder from Hawaii, who played and coached for the Dutch Hoofdklasse champion Computer SOS Tex Town Tigers during the 2009 season. She played for the Cal Golden Bears and was an All-American in 2004. Gober is 22 years old and a right-handed pitcher, who is currently finishing her college career at Florida State University. She had an ERA of 1.24 in 191 2/3 innings last year.

The Softball season in Germany starts on April 10th and 11th with Mannheim hosting the Laufer Woelfe at home. This weekend the Tornados will travel to Haarlem, Netherlands for a preseason tournament.

Mannheim had to beat the Haar Disciples 10-1 in the semi-final game on Sunday morning after having concluded the preliminary round of the final four in second place behind Neunkirchen. Last year’s champion Hamburg Knights was eliminated in the quarter finals a few weeks ago. Also participating in the final tournament were the Brauweiler Raging Abbots. But they only won the opener against the Nightmares before losing to the Tornados and the Disciples to finish fourth.

Sunday’s winning pitcher Mona Hoerner also received the trophy for the Most Valuable Player, going 3-0 in five games (four starts) with an ERA of 1.79 and 21 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings (eleven walks). She also batted .455 (OBP .600/.636). Whitney Humphreys of Neunkirchen got the Best Pitcher award for a perfect ERA of 0.00 in eleven innings. Her teammate Arlene Quinn was named Best Batter, hitting .500 (OBP .467/SLG .714).

In the north the BRAUWEILER RAGING ABBOTS won three of their four games against the WESSELING VERMINS and the HOLM WESTEND 69ers. The latter also lost twice versus the NEUNKIRCHEN NIGHTMARES to open the year 0-4.

In the south KARLSRUHE, MANNHEIM and HERRENBERG kicked off with two victories each. The WANDERERS were able to celebrate a no-hitter in the 7-0 opener in Darmstadt. Laura Baessler struck out seven in five innings, allowing just two base runners on an error and a walk.

The KNIGHTS had clinched their final berth by winning all three preliminary games on Saturday. The NIGHTMARES had to defeat MANNHEIM 4-2 in the semi-final on Sunday morning. All four runs were by NEUNKIRCHEN were unearned, as the TORNADOS defense committed five errors in the game. Malia Theissen scored twice. Arlene Quinn and Ulli Gerlach picked up RBIs.

The fourth participant at the Roberto Clemente Field in Mannheim was HAAR, which lost all three games and finished in fourth in the final standings of the season. Valentina Mommer from the KNIGHTS received the MVP trophy of the event. Teammate Vivian Melzer got awarded as best pitcher. The home crowd celebrated Shalayna Nutter-Gaudet (MAT) as best batter.

The HAMBURG KNIGHTS defeated the HERRENBERG WANDERERS 9-2 in both games of the doubleheader. The NEUNKIRCHEN NIGHTMARES got a 2-1 win, after crushing the FREISING GRIZZLIES 17-0 in the series opener. Last year’s champion MANNHEIM TORNADOS got upset 1-2 in the first match against the BRAUWEILER RAGING ABBOTS, but got revenge with a 20-0 shutout in the second. The HAAR DISCIPLES lost a slugfest to the WESSELING VERMINS 12-13, but returned home tied in the series after a 10-0 victory in game two. The first round of the playoffs will be completed after the European Softball Championships Junior in Deggendorf, Germany on August 23.
