Rouen Huskies to renovate parts of Stadium

The Rouen Huskies have announced plans to renovate parts of its stadium. Together with the city of Rouen they will build a new backstop and new stands with room for 300 spectators. Also they are planning to install lights, which unfortunately won’t be sufficient for games, but good enough to practice in the evening. Construction is scheduled to begin in August and should be finished by the end of October. It is another step to improve the stadium. A couple years ago artificial turf was installed in the infield. Chevaliers de Beaucaire add Navarro, Vicente and Rolet

The promoted Chevaliers de Beaucaire have added three young players to bolster the roster for the 2012 season in the Division 1 league in French Baseball. The biggest name is probably Joris Navarro, one of the better young pitchers in European Baseball. The 21-year-old played for the Montpellier Barracudas in 2011, striking out 44 and walking 21 in 37 2/3 innings. He had an ERA of 4.78. He also played for the French national team during the 2010 European Championship and has been invited to the MLB European Academy in Tirrenia.

The second 21-year-old from Montpellier is infielder Simon Vicente. He played three years for the Barracudas, but attended Douglas College in Vancouver recently. He batted .299 last year. The third new player is the 25-year-old third baseman Florent Rolet. The former member of Paris UC and the baseball academy in Rouen was playing in Marseille since 2006. As usually in Europe Beaucaire’s success will also depend on the strength of the foreign players, but the foundation is there for a good season.

The reigning French champion Rouen Huskies has a new manager. Keino Perez, longtime pitcher for the club from Venezuela, is succeeding Robin Roy at the helm. The 32-year-old Perez played professionally for the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians organizations before coming to Europe. He joined Almere in the Netherlands for the 2003 and 2004 seasons. One year later he debuted for the Huskies.

Rouen additionally announced the signing of the Australian infielder Mathew Smith. The 20-year-old is coming from the Adelaide Bite of the Australian Baseball League. Playing second base he batted .208/.300/.338 with three homeruns, a double, six runs and 12 RBI in 30 games for the Bite this year. He also played for Adelaide in the ABL season 2010/2011 and was a member of the Australian 16U and 18U National Teams. He was named Rookie of the Year at the Claxton Shield 2009/2010.

Will Musson returns to Paris UC for 2nd Season

Just a couple of days after announcing the acquisition of four players, the French record title holder Paris UC is bringing back American pitcher Will Musson. He will be shoulder the foreign pitcher workload with James Murrey. Musson came to the French capital last offseason and emerged as the hoped standout hurler, posting an ERA of 3.68 in 11 starts with 112 strikeouts and 23 walks in 80 2/3 innings. He also batted .364 with an on-base percentage of .463. Head coach Jeff Stoeckel on the additions to the 2012 roster:

“I am extremely excited for the 2012 season. This off-season, the rules for foreign players changed and we are now allowed to have 3 foreign players in the game at one time. One thing that I was very concerned about last season was exhausting the arm of Will Musson each and every week. Many times during the season, Will would throw well over 100 pitches in consecutive weeks, and I think it really took a toll on his arm during the latter part of the season. I was thinking about what the best combination of 3 foreign players would be, and it was clear that we needed a shortstop and a starting pitcher. By signing Phil Bauer (Xavier University and the Cincinnati Reds), we are getting a potent offensive threat who can also flash some leather from the shortstop position — a unique combination for a middle guy. By adding James Murrey from Toulouse re-signing Will Musson, we are getting the league-leader in E.R.A. and keeping the league-leader in strikeouts from 2011. Having that duo of Murrey and Musson will really keep the stress low on both of their arms and make both of them more effective. They are going to be unstoppable together. Plus, Will has really been working hard this off-season on his offensive approach, and I expect him to be a two-way threat playing 3B/1B when he’s not pitching. People in the league forget that he hit .364 last season in addition to what he did on the mound. This year is going to be exciting for us, and I fully expect those guys to help us improve our record from last season.”

Paris UC adds James Murrey, Phil Bauer and others

Paris UC is adding four new players to the 2012 roster in the French Division 1. Phil Bauer, James Murrey, Jerome Dussart and Sebastien Duchossoy will reinforce the team of returning head coach Jeff Stoeckel.

Bauer is a 22-year-old shortstop from Ohio, who went to Xavier University and was signed by the Cincinnati Reds organization last year. He batted .206/.351/.270 with one homerun in 23 games last summer, splitting time between the Arizona Summer League and the California League.

Murrey is a well-known name in French baseball after going 6-2 with an ERA of 1.11 in eight starts for Stade Toulousain in 2011. He struck out 70 batters in just 56 2/3 innings, walking 21. At Macalester College in Western Springs, Illinois he had an ERA of 1.95 with 75 strikeouts in 55 innings in 2010.

The other two players are from France. Dussart is coming from the Savigny Lions. He batted .238 in seven games last year. Duchossoy is a pitcher from the Montigny Cougars. He had an ERA of 5.54 in 2011. Both should add depth for the record champion in France.

2011 Record: 19-9
2011 Ranking: 3rd place in French Elite League following regular season. The Rouen Huskies entered the 2011 season as defending champion and heavy favorite. In the end the team fulfilled expectations. However in the process Rouen struggled at times and had to settle for third place in the regular season. They beat Stade Toulousain in the quarterfinals and the Savigny Lions in the semi-finals to return to the championship series. In the finals they overcame a 0-2 deficit against the Montpellier Barracudas and celebrated another title.

Leonel Cespedes joins Templiers Senart

Besides the 17-year-old infielder Dylan Mayeux the Templiers Senart add another young player to the 2012 roster. Leonel Cespedes, an 18-year-old pitcher/outfielder, is coming from Stade Toulousain and the baseball academy in Toulouse. He appeared in 12 games for the Tigers in 2011, making six starts. He went 4-for-21 with a triple, five runs and two RBI at the plate. On the mound Cespedes was 0-3 with an ERA of 12.15 in nine games (five starts). He struck out 20 batters in 20 innings, while walking 18.

2011 Ranking: 2nd place in French Elite League following regular season. The Savigny Lions were one of the dominating teams during the regular season, finishing only due to the tiebreaker in second place. However during the semi-finals against the Rouen Huskies an ineligible player ruling by the French Federation turned a 1-1 split into a 0-2 deficit and Savigny lost the series in four games.

They still ended up in the playoffs due to a format change. Toulouse faced the Rouen Huskies in the quarterfinals and lost the best-of-three series in two games.

Rouen Huskies acquire four new Players

The Rouen Huskies concluded the year 2011 with the announcement of four acquisitions for next season’s campaign in the French Division 1. Luis Aponte and 16-year-old prospects Dylan Gleeson and Bastien Dagneau, as well as 15-year-old Tom Cuzor are joining the defending champion. Aponte is the biggest name and an immediate reinforcement, while the other three are investments in the future.

Templiers Senart introduce new Player

The Templiers Senart have added a new player to the roster for the 2012 season in the Division 1 in French Baseball. Infielder Dylan Mayeux, who attended the baseball academy in Rouen, is coming from the demoted Montigny Cougars. He went 4-for-38 with a run and a RBI in 15 games (13 starts) this season.

2012 Challenge de France announced

The French Baseball and Softball Federation (FFBS) announced the 9th edition of the Challenge de France. The 2012 tournament for the eight Division 1 teams in French Baseball will be played from May 17 to 20 at venues, which will be determined later. The two pools for the preliminary round are already set. A complete and detailed schedule will be announced in the future.

French Federation releases provisional Schedule for 2012

The French Baseball and Softball Federation announced a provisional schedule for the 2012 season in the Division 1. As you see the name of the league also was changed (previously: “Elite”). The new year in French Baseball starts on March 18 with a matchup between last year’s finalists Rouen Huskies and Montpellier Barracudas. The regular season consists of 14 game days with nine-inning doubleheaders and ends on July 8. The top six teams reach the playoffs with the top two having a bye in round one. The quarterfinals start on July 21. The Beaucaire Chevaliers are being promoted, replacing the Montigny Cougars.

Frederic Hanvi, Felix Brown selected in Draft of Japanese Independent League

According to a report by Honus.fr the tryouts for two of the three French players in Japan were successful. Former minor leaguer Frederic Hanvi and Felix Brown were selected in the 11^th, respective 10^th round of a draft by the Gunma Diamond Pegasus of the Baseball Challenge League, a semi-professional independent league in Japan. The two members of the French national team now will have a chance to play there next season. Besides Hanvi and Brown, also Eloi Secleppe made the tryout trip to Japan, but didn’t make the cut after the first round of the tryouts.

French Federation teams up with Kenko to support Youth Competitions

The French Baseball and Softball Federation (FFBS) announced on Wednesday that they have partnered up with Nagase Kenko to support youth competitions in French Baseball. The Japanese sporting goods company will provide 1,000 dozens of balls for youth categories U6 to U16, becoming the official ball supplier in 2012. Nagase Kenko was the official ball supplier for the IBAF 12U Baseball World Championship and the IBAF 16U Baseball World Championship this summer.

More French Players in Japan

Adding to a recent report that Eloi Secleppe traveled to Japan for tryouts for an independent league, we have more news regarding French players on the other side of the globe. As two of our commenters pointed out, Felix Brown and Frederic Hanvi joined Secleppe on the tryout tour. Hanvi already tried last winter, but had no luck and returned to the Templiers Senart for the 2011 season in the French Elite League.

Also we received word that two veteran players are currently in Japan. Pierrick Lemestre (Savigny Lions) and Mathieu Brelle-Andrade (Templiers Senart) are working out with a minor league team of the Hanshin Tigers (see picture). Jamal Boutagra (Templiers Senart), who kept close ties with former French national team coach Yoshio Yoshida, brought them to Japan. French Baseball can only improve due to such initiatives.

French Players try out in Japan

Pitcher Eloi Secleppe of the Savigny Lions and two other French players (let us know, if you know their names) have made the trip to Japan to try out for professional teams in an independent league. They were accompanied by Daisuke Ikenaga, who played and coached in France this year. Secleppe and company will stay in Japan until December 16.

For the last vote of the year, the WEP committee had a problem. In a collective performance that saw their team coming back from a 0W-2L deficit, which player is the most valuable? To avoid a bad answer and because there is no rule against, we have chosen to honor all the members of the Rouen Huskies, not just one, who participated to the victories in games 3, 4 & 5 and in particular for these crucial plays:

- Joris Bert’s outfield assist (relayed by Quentin Becquey) in game 3, that cut a runner at home plate in the first inning
– Luc Piquet’s 2-RBI double in game 3 that gave the lead 2-0
– Jordan Crystal 2-run ball with 8K in game 3 that preserved the Huskies chances
– Owen Ozanich 1-run ball in game 4
– Keino Perez’s save that closed the door in the 8th and 9th in game 4, that tied the series 2-to-2

The Rouen Huskies have accomplished the improbable and came back from a 0-2 deficit in the best-of-five final series against the Montpellier Barracudas. Using their home field advantage in games three to five, Rouen scored four runs apiece in 4-2, 4-1 and 4-3 victories en route to another title. The Montpellier Barracudas are just one win away from ending the championship streak of the Rouen Huskies in the French Elite League. They swept the first two games of the best-of-five series this weekend, taking a 2-0 lead. On Saturday Montpellier won a ten-inning thriller 4-3 with Thomas Meley defeating Keino Perez in the battle of the bullpens. One day later the Barracudas celebrated an 8-3 victory. Games three to potentially five will be played in Rouen next weekend.

Laurent Andrades (Montpellier Barracudas) is named WEP16. One day after Samuel Meurant’s one-hitter shutout that kept Sénart alive in the series, he didn’t leave any chance to the Templiers with 9 innings of one-run-ball. This win gave his team the ticket to the French Finals 2011 three games-to-one. The Barracudas will host the Rouen Huskies next weekend for the first two games of a best-of-five series.

In the semi-finals, Laurent is 1-0, 3.86ERA and 7K in 14 innings.

The lefty pitched one of his finest season in 2011 and his 8 wins are a new personal best. In career, he was 24-13 with 6 saves, 3.09ERA and 320 K in 358 innings. He also plays for French National Team.

The Montpellier Barracudas won the best-of-five semi-final series against the Templiers Senart this weekend in the French Elite League to secure a spot in the French Finals, facing defending champion Rouen Huskies. Senart avoided the sweep with a 7-0 shutout on Saturday, but the Barracudas converted its second match ball in game four on Sunday with a 4-1 victory. The French Finals will start on October 1 and 2 in Montpellier.

Owen Ozanich (Rouen Huskies) is named WEP of the French Elite League semifinal versus Savigny Lions. He outdueled Pierrick Lemestre in game 1 and Clayton Cooper in the 4th game to help his club to advance into the Finals, winning the series three games to one. His cumulative statistics are 2-0, 18 IP (both are complete games), 2.00ERA and 8 K.

Arrived late this year, Owen pitched only 18 innings during the regular season with 9K, 2.00ERA and a 1-0 record. He also picked a win during European Cup (14IP, 1.93ERA), an important one that secured a spot for France in Group A.

The 21-year-old right-handed pitcher, Owen Ozanich, graduated at the University of Vermont (NCAA Division I). He was born in Annemasse (Haute-Savoie, France), has dual citizenship and speaks French. He played for the French National Team during Prague Baseball Week 2011 (first selection ever).

The Comanches de Toulon have won the French Softball Championship 2011. They beat the Thiais Tigers 10-0 in the finals on Sunday in Perpignan. It was their fourth consecutive title. Nice and Meyzieu came in at third and fourth in the final standings. Toulon also swept the individual awards with Cindy Cauchi, Laurence Cornaille and Céline Lassaigne.

The Rouen Huskies have reached the finals in the French Elite League. They won the best-of-five semi-final series 3-1 against the Savigny Lions. An ineligible-player-ruling had given Rouen a 2-0 lead going into the weekend. Savigny avoided the sweep, when they defeated the Huskies 4-1 on Saturday. But one day later Rouen prevailed 3-1 to book the championship series ticket. Their opponent will be determined in the second semi-final between the Montpellier Barracudas and Templiers Senart next weekend. This series was on hold, as Montpellier played the European Cup Playoff.

French Semis: Rouen tries to complete Sweep after Federation Decision

Similar to the Czech Extraleague there is also just one semi-final in the French Elite League this weekend, as the Montpellier Barracudas try to win a second European Cup spot for France. However the best-of-five series between the Savigny Lions and Rouen Huskies took a turn this week. Savigny used Romain Martinez-Scott in last week’s doubleheader, who apparently wasn’t eligible to play after playing in Australia. The French Baseball and Softball Federation ruled that Rouen wins both games 9-0 and the Huskies need just one more win to clinch a return to the finals.

The French Elite League Playoffs will continue this weekend with games one and two of the best-of-five semi-final series. After the Rouen Huskies and Montpellier Barracudas eliminated the Pessac Panthers and Toulouse Tigers, the two top-ranked teams after the regular season will enter the postseason. The Savigny Lions will square off with the Rouen Huskies in a rematch of last year’s finals. The Templiers Senart are going to face the Montpellier Barracudas.

There will be live play by play available for the semi-final between Senart and Montpellier. Statistics should be published on the new website “My Stats Online”.

Rouen defeated Stade Toulousain 8-2 and 15-3 last weekend to earn a matchup with the Savigny Lions. Montpellier edged out the Pessac Panthers 6-2 and 10-2 en route to a semi-final against the Templiers Senart. In the next round the best-of-five format will be used. The semi-finals will be played on September 10/11 and September 17/18.

In the first round the Templiers Senart and Savigny Lions have a bye thanks to finishing first and second in the regular season. The teams in third to sixth have to play, trying to win a spot in the semi-finals. Defending champion Rouen Huskies is facing Stade Toulousain in the best-of-three series, the Montpellier Barracudas the promoted Pessac Panthers. Semi-finals and finals will be played in the best-of-five format.

Mid-Season Interview with PUC Head Coach Jeff Stoeckel

PUC. Just when it looked as if PUC would qualify for the playoffs, and playing much more aggressively than it had in previous seasons, things kind of fell apart. Looking back on the season, what’s your reaction? How would you size things up?

JS: My goal from the beginning of the season was to get my guys to understand the game of baseball better, and to play the game aggressively. In terms of wins and losses, I did not have a concrete goal for the team other than improving our record from last year. We absolutely achieved both of those goals. Paris UC had a terrible season last year, and we didn’t have six of the top players from that team on the roster this year. Additionally, we were unfortunately hurt by some very key injuries during the season. All things considered, I am very proud of my team for accomplishing what they did. Last season, we were 3-21. This season, including the Challenge de France and 2 preseason games, we were 12-21.

PUC. What are we missing, what do we need in order to reach the playoffs and compete with the best teams for the championship?

JS: The answer to this question is not simple. If I had to point out two of our major weaknesses as a team it would be our pitching and our athleticism. We were last in the league in pitching, and relied too much on our foreign pitching to help us win games. The best teams in this league have solid French pitching, and until we manage to develop our French pitching, winning will be difficult. Concerning our athleticism as a team, we suffered in the outfield and on the base paths because of our lack of speed and versatility. I am a coach that likes to play baseball aggressively, and in order to do this, we need to improve our athleticism.

PUC. Generally speaking, what do you make of the 2011 Elite season? In particular, how would you compare the level of play here with that of American universities?

JS: I had a great time coaching in the Elite division during my first season. The glaring observation is that there is a big difference between the best teams in the league, and the worst teams in the league. For baseball, I do not believe it is a good thing when a league is unbalanced, so I hope the league will be better balanced next season. Compared to the level of play in American universities, I believe there are players in the French Elite division that could perform well at American universities. The biggest difference between American university baseball and French baseball is absolutely the depth of pitching. Every major university baseball program in the United States has someone on their staff that can throw 90+ mph and a solid group of pitchers than on any day can beat any other team. In our league, each team might have 1 or 2 solid pitchers, and then after that the level really drops.

PUC. Among our opponents, which teams or players impressed, surprised or disappointed you?

JS: Impressed : I liked the way that Montpellier played the game. It’s clear that Jean-Michel (Head Coach) demands his players to play the game the right way. Although they weren’t the most talented team, I think they play the game with class and determination. Surprised : I was surprised by the reception I received by all of the opposing teams. I am a foreign coach new to this league, and all of the teams made it a point to openly welcome me to the league and to France.
Disappointed : I do not think I was « disappointed » in anything this season. Instead, I think « confused » would be a better term for how I felt about the mentality of my team against the better teams in the league. It is a fact that there is no team in this league that my team should be intimidated by. None of the teams in the league are unbeatable, and we should never be intimidated by any other team in the league. However, I feel that my team played scared against the better teams in the league.

PUC: What about players on our team?

JS: Impressed : There are 3 names that come to mind when it comes to making an impression on me during my first season : Oscar Saavedra, Maximin Monbeig, and Camille Mesguich. Oscar’s approach at the plate improved throughout the season, and he will become an even better hitter when he sees more pitching with his new approach. Maximin needs to mature a lot as a baseball player, both physically and mentally, but he was a much better pitcher at the end of the year than he was at the beginning of the year. Lastly, Camille, like Oscar, improved his approach at the plate throughout the year and became a much better hitter later in the year. As a catcher, he improved his receiving and game calling with every game. I hope to rely on Camille more in the future as a cornerstone of our team.
Surprised : I was definitely surprised by the play of secondbaseman Francisco Arriagada. Well into his forties, he gave me fantastic effort at practice and during the games. He was easily our most reliable defensive option in the infield, and even came up with a few keys hits. Disappointed : Again, I do not like to think that I was disappointed by anything. If there is any disappointment in my mind, then I should be help accountable as the Head Coach. I will surely work hard to improve our mentality against the more talented teams in the league next season.

PUC. How do you see the play-downs at this time? What are you hoping for?

JS : I told my team that we will treat the play-downs like our « play-offs. » With Paris UC baseball, our goal is always to play the game well, and if we do that, we will win most of the time.

PUC. What, for you, was the highlight or best moment of the regular season?

JS: Our season was difficult because of the off-season losses and in-season injuries. So, for me, when we went 2-2 against Pessac and Toulouse with no foreign pitching and no French catcher, that showed the heart of our team. We beat one of the best pitchers in the league when we beat Briones of Pessac, and we came back from a 2-run deficit to beat Toulouse in extra-innings. Those were great wins for the team.

And the worst?

JS: I do not know if there was a worst « moment, » but I was most frustrated by our team’s lack of confidence against the better teams in the league. Like I said before, there is no team in the league that is so good that we can not beat them, and I want our players to play like they know this.

PUC. In addition to being coach or manager of the Elites, you are also sports director for the entire PUC baseball and softball program. What’s your evaluation of how the other PUC teams did this season?

JS: I am extremely proud of all of the accomplishments of the Paris UC baseball teams. PUC2 has an opportunity to advance a division, PUC3 qualified for the play-offs, U21 won some games despite their inexperience, the Cadets and the Minimes were IDF champions, and the Benjamins had another great season finishing 4th. I bring a new attitude to baseball at Paris UC, and what I am most proud of as Technical Director is how all of the teams took my advice to heart and played baseball with more of a competitive and fair spirit. I want all of our teams to set an example for how to play baseball competitively and with class. We took a step in the right direction this season.

The French Elite League concluded its regular season on Sunday with a pair of make-up games between the Montpellier Barracudas and Savigny Lions. The Barracudas stunned Savigny with a pair of wins. The playoffs start at the end of August. In the first round the Lions and regular season winner Templiers Senart will have a bye. Montpellier is going to take on the Pessac Panthers and the Rouen Huskies will have to battle with Stade Toulousain to clinch a spot in the semi-finals.

On the last game day in the regular season of the French Elite League leader Savigny Lions and the Rouen Huskies celebrated sweeps over the Pessac Panthers, respective Cougars de Montigny. The Rouen Huskies have won the 2011 Challenge de France. On Sunday they beat the Savigny Lions 6-4 in the title game. All six runs scored in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jordan Crystal and Rickey Thomas had two RBI each. Savigny tried to come back, but only managed to cut the deficit to two runs in the seventh.

Challenge de France: Results Day 3, July 16

The Rouen Huskies and the Savigny Lions have reached the final of the 2011 Challenge de France. On Saturday Rouen beat the Montpellier Barracudas 3-1 in the semi-finals thanks to a strong pitching effort of the duo Jordan Crystal and Anthony Piquet. In the second semi-final Savigny edged out the Templiers Senart 5-4, overcoming a 1-4 deficit in the process. A RBI double by Yan Dal Zotto in the bottom of the sixth plated the decisive run to complete the comeback. The title game will be played on Sunday afternoon.

The top four teams in the French Elite League also dominate at the Challenge de France. On the second day of the cup tournament on Friday, the Templiers Senart and Montpellier Barracudas followed the Savigny Lions and Rouen Huskies into the semi-finals. Savigny later beat Montpellier and Rouen Senart to clinch the number one seeds and home field advantage on Saturday.

The Challenge de France, a cup tournament for the teams of the French Elite League, started on Thursday with six games. The Rouen Huskies and the Savigny Lions picked up two wins apiece, while the Montpellier Barracudas and the Templiers Senart won once. The Pessac Panthers and Paris UC were two-game losers.

Challenge de France starts on Thursday

The Challenge de France, a four-day tournament for all eight French Elite League teams, will start on Thursday in Rouen and Les Andelys. Six games are scheduled for day one. Six more will follow on Friday, before semi-finals, bronze medal game and championship game will be played on Saturday and Sunday. The winner of the Challenge de France will receive the ticket to the 2012 European Cup.

In the French Elite League things are getting interesting at the top of the standings. The Templiers Senart took both games of the Savigny Lions on Sunday and now are trailing their opponents from Sunday by percentage points only. Also Stade Toulousain stunned the Rouen Huskies in game one of their twin bill to capture the split.

The other two, Rouen Huskies and Montpellier Barracudas, are on the road. Rouen travels to Toulouse for a matchup against Stade Toulousain. The ‘Cudas are in the capitals for a duel with Paris UC.
