Royal Greys win 2011 Belgian Softball Championship

With the IBAF Baseball World Cup getting most of our attention, we now take a look back at the decisions in some of the European Softball Leagues.

While the Royal Greys missed the Belgian Series of the baseball competition, their softball team made it into the championship series in softball and captured the national title with a three-game sweep over the Brasschaat Braves. They out-scored the Braves 17-1 in the series. During the regular season the Heist o/d Berg Afterburners had finished in first place with a 22-2 record, followed by the Greys and Braves. But in the top-four round the two Belgian Series participants edged out the Afterburners with seven wins in twelve games.

Belgian Federation celebrates with Manneken Pis

The Belgian Baseball and Softball Federation celebrated its 75^th anniversary on Saturday morning by putting on a national team uniform on “Manneken Pis” in Brussels.

International Softball Tournament in Namur, Belgium

On June 11 and 12 the Namur Angels organize an international softball tournament. On hand will be the national teams from France and Belgium plus All-Star teams from Belgium and the Netherlands. Additionally the national team from Indonesia was supposed to come, but withdraw from the competition shortly before the start of the tournament. Check LFBBS.be for a complete schedule.

Belgian Baseball and Softball Federation releases Competition Details for 2011 Season

The technical commission of the Belgian Baseball and Softball Federation released competition division and pools information on Friday. No surprises, as the Belgian First Division Baseball is returning to an eight-team format. The Borgerhout Squirrels return to the top division in Belgian Baseball. Six teams will be in the First Division Softball.

Heist o/d Berg Afterburners 2010 Belgian Softball Champions

The Heist o/d Berg Afterburners have won the 2010 Belgian Softball Champions. They beat the Hoboken Pioneers in four games in the Belgian Series to pick up the title. They clinched the championship with a 7-4 victory on Sunday afternoon. The Afterburners already had dominated during the regular season, winning 27 of the 28 games for the number-one seed. In the final round they again finished in first place with an 8-3 record. The Pioneers came in second both times. Last year’s champion and the title holder of five of the last six seasons, the Brasschaat Braves, finished in third place.

Catching Up: Brasschaat Braves win Softball Title in Belgium

During the next two weeks we are going to look at a few Baseball and Softball Leagues in Europe, we were not covering during the 2009 season.

The Brasschaat Braves have won the women Softball championship in Belgium. They defeated the Hoboken Pioneers in four games to claim the title. Both teams already dominated throughout the regular season, with the Braves winning 21 games and the Pioneers 20. During the playoff round three teams were within one game after twelve games to determine the Belgian Series participants.

Changes on Belgian Board, Scoresheets available

Some changes on the board of the Belgian Baseball and Softball Federation took place last month. Paul Van Craenenbroeck and Lucien Destexhe resigned and Ben Verhaevert became new secretary general. The board now consists of six members. Two new members will be appointed soon. At the end of May a general assembly with all Belgian clubs will be held in order to change the statutes of the federation.

Additionally the federation releases the scoresheets from all eleven divisions in Belgian Baseball and Softball on their website. They are available here.
