The big surprise is the missing second Spanish team. While Baseball Barcelona is playing in the European Cup in Rotterdam, a second representative wasn’t submitted for the Qualifiers after the Tenerife Marlins got relegated last year. Otherwise the groups in Namur and Attnang-Puchheim look as the toughest.

The format remains the same. A best-of-three final series following a round robin will determine the winner of each tournament. These four teams qualify for the European Cup Playoff against the two relegated teams from the A-Pool European Cups in Rotterdam and San Marino.

These qualifiers for the Final Four event will be played from Wednesday 30th May till Sunday 3rd June 2012. The date and place for the Final Four will be announced as soon as possible.

The Organizers for the four qualifiers for the European Cups will be awarded during the next T.C. meeting. The playing dates for these events are Monday 11th till Saturday 16th June 2012. Interested parties for hosting are requested to sent their application to C.E.B. before the 1st December. All qualified club teams can sent the subscription form for their participation to C.E.B. before Saturday 31st December 2011.

T&A San Marino is the 2011 European Champions Cup winner. They beat Cariparma Parma in the championship game at the Final Four tournament in Brno 7-1 on Thursday evening. A grand slam by Mattia Reginato in the second inning decided things quickly, as Parma couldn’t stage a comeback. Jairo Ramos added two solo homeruns later on to seal the deal. Tiago Da Silva (W) went the distance, allowing just one run on seven hits in nine innings. He struck out six. Rodney Medina had three hits for Cariparma. Roberto Corradini (L) gave up six hits and six runs (5 ER) in five innings to take the loss.

While the final was over in a little bit more than two hours, the game for third place earlier on Thursday was a thriller. Unipol Bologna erased an early 4-9 deficit and beat L&D Amsterdam 10-9 on a walk-off RBI single by Juan Carlos Infante in the bottom of the ninth. Five runs in the eighth had tied the game. Juan Pablo Angrisano had the big hit during the rally with a bases clearing double. Vince Rooi and Kenny Berkenbosch hit homeruns and combined for six RBI on the Pirates side. Mark Langone (W) received the win, Rik Geestman (L) the loss.

T&A San Marino beat L&D Amsterdam 1-0 in ten innings in semi-final number one on Wednesday in Brno, Czech Republic to reach the final at the 2011 European Champions Cup Final Four. A sac fly by Wuilliuans Vasquez in the bottom of the tenth inning broke the scoreless tie and decided the outcome in favor of the freshly crowned Italian Baseball League champion in his duel with his counterpart of the Dutch Hoofdklasse. Henry Bonilla (SMA) and Rob Cordemans (AMS) exchanged zeroes in the beginning, as neither starting pitcher backed down. Bonilla allowed just five hits and a walk in eight innings. Cordemans struck out nine and issued only three hits and a base on balls in nine frames. Darwin Cubillan (W) picked up the win in relief. Al Morales (L) took the loss.

In an all-Italian matchup Cariparma Parma edged out defending champion Unipol Bologna 3-2 in the second semi-final on Wednesday, joining the Titans in the finals. In another game dominated by the pitchers, both teams only were able to score in one frame. Parma scored three times in the fifth thanks to a wild pitch and RBIs by Davide Dallospedale and Rodney Medina. Bologna tried to come back in the seventh. But after plating two runs on RBIs by Livinston Santaniello and Gabriele Ermini, Joe Mazzuca fouled out with two outs and the bases loaded. Marco Grifantini (W) allowed four hits, two runs and four walks in 6 1/3 innings for the win. Jesus Matos (L) was charged with the loss after six frames, seven hits, three runs and a bb.

Baseball club Zagreb is the winner of this year’s (14th) Interleague final tournament. Clubs from Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia and Hungary played in this year’s competition. The final tournament was played in Karlovac, Croatia. BC Zagreb (Croatia) played against BC Nada SSM (Croatia) in the final and Zagreb team won 10-7. This is a second crown for Zagreb team, as they already won the Croatian Championship title. For third place Slovan (Slovakia) won against Olimpia (Croatia) 23-8.
Jakub Rautner from Slovan was named the best batter. Best pitcher was Zagreb’s Ernesto Pereira. MVP of the tournament was Marko Pavlaković from BC Zagreb.

On Wednesday, September 21 the semi-finals take place with a matchup between the freshly crowned national title holders T&A San Marino and L&D Amsterdam. In the evening defending champion Unipol Bologna takes on Cariparma Parma. Games start at 1pm and 6pm at the AVG Draci Brno ballpark. One day later the bronze medal game and the championship game will follow.

The date for the 2011 European Champions Cup Final Four was pushed up front a few days due to the upcoming IBAF Baseball World Cup in Panama. Originally it was planned to play next weekend. So, it is going to be interesting, how many spectators will show up for afternoon games in the middle of the week.

Sleepwalkers – Rascals

Game 1: 14-2 (7 inn)

The first game between the two top Hungarian teams didn’t live up to the expectations, the reigning champion Sleepwalkers, crushed the visiting Rascals in the first game of the doubleheader. The young lefty, Tamás Szabó didn’t allow a run until the 6^th inning. Szabó held opposing hitters off balance and made them swing and miss. There wasn’t a hard hit ball until the substitute “Szasza” hit a hard liner over the leffielder Földessy’s head and scored the first run for them. The Sleepwalkers never let Gergely Felsővári to settle down scoring 9 runs in 4+ innings off him. The southpaw, Péter Draganits followed him on the mound , who seemed to have found the antidote to the Sleepwalkers’ bats, but got hit hard in the 6-7^th inning. The Sleepwalkers ensured to finish top seed in the northern interleague with this win.

Game 2: 0-6

The second game  looked to be much more interesting with the pitching match-up of Péter Gyurcsek and Gábor Nagy.  The home team now playing as visitors started off the game with back-to-back hits from Halmos and Bubla, but Nagy settled down and got Illés, Simonyi and Németh to pop-up. What didn’t go well for the home team, went great for the Rascals. It seemed like every time they managed a hit against Gyurcsek they scored the runner. Timely hits just didn’t happen for the Sleepwalkers, squandering runners in scoring position several times.

The Rascals celebrated their first ever championship win over the Sleepwalkers and left the city on a high note waiting for their first InterLeague playoff.

AVG Draci Brno – Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz postponed

The afternoon game between AVG Draci Brno and the Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz got postponed in the top of the fifth inning due to rain. The score was tied 1-1 at this moment and Miguel Rizo (MPC) and Pat Ahearne (DRA) battling it out on the mound in a classic pitcher’s duel. The game will not be made up and the Marlins will finish the tournament in sixth place.

DOOR Neptunus – Cariparma Parma 1-7

Host Cariparma Parma used a 7-1 victory over DOOR Neptunus on Sunday evening to pick up the second ticket to the European Champions Cup Final Four in Brno. They will be joined by T&A San Marino. Five runs between the fourth and sixth decided the outcome. Doubles by Marco Yepez and Luca Scalera in the fourth broke a 1-1 tie. Riccardo Bertagnon drove in two. Stefano De Simoni went 4-for-4 with three runs. Marco Grifantini (W) pitched 5 2/3 innings for the win, allowing three hits an unearned run and six walks. Craig Anderson (L) took the loss. The game was delayed for nearly an hour due to rain.

CB Sant Boi concluded the European Cup in Amsterdam with an 11-2 victory over the Hoboken Pioneers on Sunday. They still finish the tournament in fifth place. However with the victory the defending European Champions Cup winner booked first place and a ticket to the Final Four in Brno. Last September Unipol Bologna edged out the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe in extra innings in the finals of the European Champions Cup in Barcelona. On Saturday the German Baseball-Bundesliga club got some payback, defeating the Italian team 7-6 in twelve innings. With the loss, Bologna needs a win over L&D Amsterdam on Sunday to make sure that they will finish in the top two.

Fortitudo had tied the contest on Saturday in the top of the ninth, sending the game into extra innings with the score at 2-2. Both teams scored twice in the tenth and not at all in the eleventh. The outcome finally was decided in the third extra inning, when Heidenheim used a pair of errors to answer two runs by Bologna with a three-run rally in the bottom of the frame. Simon Guehring had the walk-off hit with a RBI single, driving in Matt Gaski.

Johannes Schaeffler scored three times for the Heidekoepfe. Joe Mazzuca had three hits and two RBI for Fortitudo. The win was even more impressive, as 23-year-old German hurler Aljosha Schattmann (W) went the distance to beat the IBL club. He threw 151 pitches in the complete game. Cody Cillo, Nicholas Pugliese and Victor Moreno (L) climbed the mound for Unipol with last year’s finals hero Moreno taking the loss.

CB Sant Boi – North Stars Moscow 11-1 (7)

CB Sant Boi crushed the North Stars Moscow 11-1 in seven innings to pick up their first win of the tournament. William Domero doubled three times to drive in four runs for the Spanish champion. Rafael Rivas reached four times and scored thrice. Winston Marquez (W) struck out nine in six innings, allowing five hits, a run and four walks. Nikol Chermoshentsev (L) was charged with the loss.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates – Hoboken Pioneers 13-0 (7)

L&D Amsterdam used five-run rallies in the second and sixth en route to a 13-0 shutout over the Hoboken Pioneers, booking a ticket to the European Champions Cup Final Four in Brno, Czech Republic at the end of September. Roeland Henrique Jr. and Bas Nooij combined for five hits and seven RBI to lead the Pirates charged. Ben Grover (W) went seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and a pair of walks. He struck out twelve. Terrence Antonacci (L) got hit hard, surrendering twelve runs on twelve hits and a walk in five-plus innings.

As like on Thursday rain played hiccup with the Qualifier European Cup in Montpellier, France. The finals were canceled and the Montpellier Barracudas, which had won all four preliminary round games before, were named winner of the tournament. They would have played the Belgian vice champion Deurne Spartans in the best-of-three finals.

Technika Brno used two lopsided wins on Saturday to overcome a 0-1 deficit against the Bern Cardinals en route to the Qualifier title in Attnang-Puchheim. Their second trophy in as many years. Bern had won the preliminary game by a score of 9-5 on Thursday for the 1-0 advantage in the finals.

In game one on Saturday Technika scored all ten runs between second and sixth in a 10-1 win. Matt Lawman (3 RBI) and Michal Koci hit homeruns. Three players scored twice for Brno. Roger Deago (W) struck out 16 batters in nine innings, allowing six hits, a run and two walks. Former Major Leaguer Eduardo Villacis (L) was charged with eight runs (3 ER) on eight hits in five innings.

In the decisive rubber match Brno took a quick 5-0 lead after three innings and blew things wide open with four runs in the seventh and five in the ninth. Nada SSM Split didn’t allow any drama and used their first match point to win the Qualifier European Cup in Athens, Greece. On Saturday they shut out Beograd 96 to win the best-of-three finals 2-0. He hit three of the first four batters, while the fourth reached on a dropped flyball. Polyakov went 3-for-5 with three runs. R. Lopata (L) drove in three.
