Europe might get something similar. Initiated by the Foundation for Development of Youth Baseball in Southwest Netherlands and based in Oosterhout, the Netherlands, the Collegiate Baseball League Europe (CBLP) is supposed to start with an eight-day, six-game wooden bat competition for European players next summer (July 7 to 14, 2012). There will be four teams. Players, born between 1989 and 1994 can register through a website for a chance to get selected in a draft at the end of March 2012. Several players from around Europe already registered. Check out the official website www.cble.org for more information.

Italy has won the title at the European Cadets Championship in Brno and Trebic, Czech Republic. In the championship game on Saturday evening they edged out host Czech Republic with a 9-8 victory. Five runs in the fifth inning erased a 0-4 deficit. Four more runs in the sixth sealed the deal before the Czech team tried to come back in the seventh. But consecutive strikeouts by Gabriele Quattrini stopped a four-run rally and saved the win for Italy. Giovanni Garbella cleared the bases with an inside the park grand slam homerun. Quattrini drove in two. Ondrej Satoria collected three hits and three runs for the Czech team. Earlier on Saturday Italy had defeated arch rival Netherlands 8-3 in the semi-finals. The Czech team needed nine innings to down Germany, which hadn’t lost in the first three games this week. Austria and Russia won the two scheduled classification round games.

Press Release Major League Baseball International

The fourth edition of the MLB Academies Tournament brought together players from Europe’s top national baseball academies for six days of Spring Training-style games and practices. The purpose of the event was to provide additional competitive and instructional opportunities to academy players in the period between their off-seasons and regular seasons. Hosted at the Regensburg Legionaere’s baseball complex in Germany, the 2011 tournament saw six teams and 122 players compete in fifteen games .

Tournament Highlights

15 games, 122 players, 6 academy nations: Holland, France, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Czech Republic

Hosted by MLB and the Regensburg Academy at the Armin Wolf Arena in Regensburg, Germany – host site of the 2009 Baseball World Cup.

Best Hitter – Oscar Combes, France (.500 BA, .636 OBP, 4-4 SB, 2 2B, 7 R)

Best Pitcher – Oscar Meuris, Netherlands (5 IP, 9 K, 1 BB, 0 H, 0.00 ERA)

Ten MLB organizations in attendance: Yankees, Padres, Diamondbacks, A’s, Cubs, Twins, Phillies, Pirates, Mariners, and Red Sox.

Format

Six teams competed in the tournament, representing the academies of Holland, France, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, and the Czech Republic. Each team also provided two to four coaches from their national academy systems to work with the players.

Each team played between four and six games depending on their available pitching and school/travel schedules.

Innings were capped at 25 pitches to limit the workload of pitchers, who also had mandatory rest days after each appearance. Teams were allowed to substitute freely, removing and re-inserting players as needed. As such, while scores were kept, the results don’t always reflect a true outcome of the game.

Each team held daily training sessions using the secondary fields and batting cages at the complex. MLB Academy Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jeff Krushell held two individual conditioning sessions with each team and met with each country’s coaches.

The 2011 MLB Academies Tournament in Regensburg, Germany continued on Tuesday with four games. For the first time this week, games were played at both fields of the Buchbinder Legionaere facilities. The highlight was a crisp game between the Netherlands and France with solid pitching performances on both sides. A homerun by Urving Kemp (NED) was the difference. Kai Bindemann homered twice for Germany on Tuesday. As usual games are played under strict rules (pitch counts, unrestricted substitutions) with the development being the main focus.

On Sunday the 4th annual MLB Academies Tournament started with two games at the Armin Wolf Arena in Regensburg, Germany. After the organizers weren’t blessed with perfect weather in the past two years, day one featured 22 degrees and sunny conditions, making it feel like Spring Training in Florida. This is also the purpose of the tourney, as the games are supposed to give the players time on the field in preparation for the new season in European Baseball.

Games are played with modified rules (25 pitches per inning, strict pitch counts, unlimited substitutions) to keep the focus on development. On Sunday representatives from 10 MLB organizations were in attendance. On the field the Netherlands and Germany settled for a 3-3 tie, as the Dutch team erased a 0-3 deficit. Later in the afternoon Sweden beat Belgium 9-8.

The 4th annual 2011 MLB Academies Tournament will be played in Regensburg, Germany from April 3 to April 8. After Tirrenia, Italy in 2008 and Toulouse, France in 2009, the Armin Wolf Arena will host the tourney for a second consecutive year. The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Sweden and the Czech Republic will send teams. Italy is missing on the schedule, while Belgium will be there for the first time.

Overall 120 players from the six mentioned national academy systems will make the trip. It is a real “Spring Training” for the participating players with a focus on games and workouts. While the games will offer players some valuable pre-season competition, the focus of the tournament will remain largely on player development. Rules will be modified to prevent extended innings and there will be strict pitching restrictions to reduce the risk of injuries.

MLB Academies in Europe
As part of its game development initiatives in Europe, Major League Baseball supports a growing network of national player academies around the continent. To date, this network includes 16 academies in eight European nations, providing over 400 of the Europe’s best young players with top-quality, year-round training. At the center of this network is the annual MLB European Academy, which will once again be held in Tirrenia, Italy from August 3 – 26. Since its inception in 2005, the MLB European Academy has brought together 227 players from 27 European and African nations, with 45 of those players going on to sign professional contracts with MLB clubs.

The 26th Annual Easter Weekend International Youth Baseball Tournament will be held in Pineuilh, France, April 23 – 25, 2011. This tournament has hosted baseball clubs from all over the world. This year Canada, Saint Martin (Caribbean), Spain, Italy and Pakistan are expected to send teams and registration is still open.

Pineuilh is a small town on the Dordogne River 70 kilometers east of Bordeaux. It is between the wine growing areas of Saint Emilion, Pomerol and Côtes du Castillon and the Perigord region of France, noted for its fine food. This small town has been the home of one of the most competitive and successful baseball clubs in France. This is the 26th consecutive annual tournament.

Teams competing are in the “cadets” division (players born in 1995, 1996 or 1997) or the “minimes” division (players born in 1998, 1999 or 2000).

Last year’s tournament drew nine “cadet” teams and seven “minime” teams. The French national umpires association sends top level umpires and trainers to this annual event. The French national scoring commission qualifies new scorers during the competitions.

Each visiting team is encouraged to bring an umpire who will be welcomed, lodged, trained and managed by the technical committee. Bus drivers are lodged free of charge. Registration is still open. Details can be found at: www.baseball.paysfoyen.com on the “Tournoi” tab or by phone: +33 557 410 191.
