The 2010 European Championship is in the books. Ten days of good and bad Baseball, homeruns, rain delays and small crowds are over. We have a new European Champion with Italy, which after 13 painful years for the Squadra Azzurra ended the reign of the Dutch team at the top of European Baseball. 2012 the Netherlands want the title back at home for their 100th anniversary of the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association.

While the tournament might be over, Mister-Baseball will recap the European Championship over the next couple of days with further news and articles, which we hadn’t gotten a chance to put it on the website yet.

The two dominating teams in European Championship history have reached the finals again. Italy will face the Netherlands on Sunday at 2pm CET at the TVC Stadium in Stuttgart, Germany. Both teams already met on Saturday with the Squadra Azzurra taking an 11-3 win. But it was more or less a meaningless game for the Dutch team, although they lost home field advantage due to the defeat.

While managers Jim Stoeckel (NED) and Marco Mazzieri (ITA) didn’t announce their starting pitchers on Saturday, it is not much of a secret, who will take the mound. Diegomar Markwell and Leon Boyd will probably split the workload for the Netherlands. Roberto Corradini is the most likely option for Italy after Cody Cillo, Tiago Da Silva and Chris Cooper pitched on the last two days.

The Netherlands have won the title in each of the last five European Championships, but every streak ends from time to time. It should be an exciting and thrilling game between the two arch rivals in European Baseball. Tickets are still available in all categories at the box office.

Germany has won the first bronze medal at the European Championship since Barcelona 1975 after defeating Sweden 8-0 on Saturday in Stuttgart. Tim Henkenjohann with only two days rest and Martin Dewald combined to allow eight hits and four walks, but kept Sweden from scoring to lead Germany to the shutout.

Henkenjohann struck out four in three-plus frames. Dewald replaced him with two on and nobody out in the fourth, but got out of the jam, when he picked off Magnus Pilegård at second and struck out Peter Johannessen and Rickard Leander. Afterwards he finished the game with six strikeouts.

Germany took the lead thanks to RBI singles by Cedric Bassel and Simon Guehring in the second and third. Four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh blew things wide open. Jendrick Speer drove in three and scored twice. Bassel reached base four times, scored twice and drove in two.

Leander (L 0-1), who hadn’t pitched that much this year, was charged with five hits, four runs (1 ER) and three bb in five-plus solid innings. At the end head coach Dennis Cook got ejected after arguing a balk call. Additionally the benches cleared, when Tony Dermendziev and Ludwig Glaser collided. German pinch runner Philipp Howard broke a finger after a head first slide at second.

Even though France put 18 hits on the board, they lost 5-14 in a slugfest against Greece on Saturday in Heidenheim. With the win the Greek team finished in fourth, as Sweden also lost to Germany. France has to settle for sixth. Two four-run rallies in the fifth and sixth decided the outcome.

Nicholas Theodorou and Mike Koutsoantonakis hit homeruns and combined for five runs and five RBI. Omar Williams and Kenji Hagiwara went deep for France. Felix Brown concluded a strong tournament with four more hits.

On the mound Efthymio Karkatselos (W 1-1) issued nine hits and three runs in five innings for the win. Nicolas Dubaut (FRA) gave up five hits, three runs and two bb in three frames. Arold Castillo (L 0-2) hit three batters and surrendered four hits while not conceding a single hit.

Italy has reached the championship game at the 2010 European Championship with an 11-3 win over the Netherlands. The Dutch team also will be the opponent on Sunday at 2pm in the title game. Jairo Ramos’ second homerun of the game in the top of the seventh broke a 3-3 tie and gave Italy the lead for good.

Six runs in the ninth, highlighted by homeruns of Laidel Chapelli and Mario Chiarini blew things wide open. The Netherlands had taken a 3-0 lead in the third, when Dwayne Kemp sent a pitch over the fence in right field for a two-run homerun and Dirk van’t Klooster scored on an error by Ramos at first base.

Chris Cooper (W 1-0) struck out eight in six strong innings, allowing two hits, three runs (2 ER) and a walk. Yovani D’Amico closed it out. Gregory Gustina (NED) received the starting nod for the Dutch team and issued eight hits, three runs (1 ER) and two bb in 5 2/3 innings. Dave Draijer (L 0-1) took the loss.

Italy scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to erase a 4-6 deficit against Germany en route to a thrilling 8-6 win. A win on Saturday against the Netherlands or a loss by Sweden against Germany will seal the final berth for the Squadra Azzurra against the Dutch team.

The German team had taken the lead on homeruns by Edward Martinez and Dominik Wulf in the sixth and seventh. But Italy answered six outs before the end. Juan Angrisano and Jack Santora reached with back-to-back singles and scored when reliever Philipp Hoffschild threw away a sac bunt by Stefano De Simoni. Tony Granato and Laidel Chapelli followed with RBI singles to put Italy ahead for good.

Jairo Ramos had driven in three runs earlier in the game. Dominik Wulf scored twice. Ludwig Glaser drove in two for Germany. Cody Cillo (ITA) issued four hits, three runs and three bb in five innings. Andre Hughes (GER) surrendered five hits, four runs (3 ER) and four walks in two-plus innings. Afterwards Dominik Hartinger (GER) kept Germany in the game with four two-hit innings of relief. Hoffschild (L 0-1) took the loss. Marco Grifantini (W 1-0) struck out four in two one-hit innings to pick up the win.

Italy’s manager Marco Mazzieri was ejected by home plate umpire Henri van Heijningen in the top of the eighth after arguing a balk call.

The Netherlands have reached the championship game at the 2010 European Championship with a 15-0 rout in five innings against Sweden on Friday evening in Heidenheim. They are now 4-0 in the final round and 7-0 overall. The Dutch team scored in each of the five frames, highlighted by five-run rallies in the first and fifth. Sweden now is 2-2 in the final round. They conclude the Euros on Saturday evening in Stuttgart against Germany.

Sidney de Jong went deep and drove in three. Raily Legito went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Dwayne Kemp also picked up two RBI. On the mound David Bergman (W 1-0) cruised to an easy win, allowing just two hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out eight. After making the trip from Stuttgart to Heidenheim, Sweden’s pitchers Peter Jansson (L 0-1) and Michael Andersson never got into the game, conceding eight, respective seven runs.

Raily Legito and Dwayne Kemp hit homeruns and combined for four RBI as the Dutch team shut out Greece 10-0 in eight innings on Friday in Heidenheim. It was their sixth win in the sixth game for the defending champion. They are now 3-0 in the final round with the game against Sweden in the evening coming up. Eugene Kingsale walked and scored three times, while the Netherlands put runs on the board in seven of the eight innings. Danny Rombley, Bryan Engelhardt and Sidney de Jong drove in two each.

Rob Cordemans (W 2-0) wasn’t as sharp as in his first start, when he combined with Dave Draijer to no-hit France. He allowed seven hits and four walks in six innings, but kept the scoreboard clean. He struck out six. Constantinos Kapothanasis (L 1-2) surrendered nine hits, seven runs (6 ER) and a base on balls in six innings, one day after pitching in relief against Germany.

Italy defeated France 9-2 in the afternoon game in Stuttgart on Friday to improve to 2-1 in the final round. With the second loss on the day, France dropped to 0-4. The Squadra Azzurra decided the outcome in the bottom of the fifth, when they put five runs on the board. Tony Granato and Jairo Ramos hit two-run homeruns. Stefano De Simoni and Giuseppe Mazzanti scored two runs each. Kenji Hagiwara and Robin Allemand hit homeruns for France.

On the mound Carlos Richetti (W 1-0) had a few problems to find his groove early on, but struck out ten pitchers in seven strong innings overall, allowing three hits and a run. Pierrick Lemestre (L 0-1) matched him in the first few frames, but kind of lost it in the fifth, issuing four hits, six runs (3 ER) and four bb in 4 2/3 innings.

Sweden has made another step forward in European Baseball after defeating France 3-2 on Friday morning in Stuttgart, improving to 2-1 in the final round. A two-run homerun by Rickard Reimer in the bottom of the sixth was the difference in the game. France tried to come back in the eighth, but only managed to produce a run by Omar Williams out of a bases loaded situation.

Back-to-back doubles by Reimer and Kris Johansson in the second had put Sweden ahead for the first time. The French team countered with a RBI single by Williams in the third. Jacob Claesson (W 2-0) gave up five hits, a run and six bb in seven innings. Samuel Meurant (L 1-1) surrendered eleven hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings. His outing was cut short, when he was hit by a comebacker.

The Czech Republic will be ranked seventh in the final standings of the 2010 European Championship after beating Great Britain 8-4 on Friday in Heidenheim. With this spot they don’t have to play a qualifier for the 2012 Euros in the Netherlands next summer.

Both teams had a nice start into the game, going back and forth, putting runs on the board in each of the first five half innings. A two-run single by Jakub Hajtmar in the top of the third put the Czech team ahead for good. They added four more runs later on and won by a four-run difference. Karel Hrusovsky hit a two-run homerun. Michal Ondracek scored three times. Chris Falls went 3-for-5 with a double, a run and a RBI on the opposing side.

On the mound the managers split the workload on a few shoulders. Petr Minarik (W 1-0) got the win allowing two hits in 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Marian Gajdos (CZE) started and issued three runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 frames. Alex Smith (GBR) gave up four hits, two runs and two bb in two innings. Stephen Spragg (L 0-2) was charged with the second loss in the tournament, conceding five hits, six runs (2 ER) and two walks in six innings of relief.

In Stuttgart the day starts with the duel between France and Sweden. Samuel Meurant (FRA) and Jacob Claesson (SWE) are on the mound. While the French open the final round with two losses, Sweden is in a better position after their win over Italy. The Squadra Azzurra is on the field afterwards against the team of Sylvain Virey. Chris Cooper, Cody Cillo and Tiago Da Silva are rested and ready to go. Italy also will have a second assignment in the evening against the 2-1 hosts Germany. Greg Frady hopes that starting pitcher Andre Hughes will be able to stop the Italian sluggers.

In Heidenheim the Czech Republic and Great Britain battle for seventh place in the morning. The winner won’t have to play a qualifier next summer and can already start preparations for the 2012 Euros in the Netherlands. Marian Gajdos (CZE) and Alex Smith (GBR) are on the mound. In the afternoon the Netherlands will face Greece with David Bergman (NED) as starting pitcher. The Dutch team already was ten kilometers in front of Heidenheim, when they returned to Stuttgart on Thursday due to the Sweden win over Italy and the elimination of Spain. In the evening Sweden has to make the 1.5 hour trip from Stuttgart to Heidenheim for their matchup with the Netherlands.

European Championship 2010, Day 7, July 29:

In the final round opener on Thursday evening in Stuttgart Germany out-slugged Greece 17-8, improving to 2-1 in this phase. The Greek team was able to stun the official announced crowd of 620 with two four-run innings, but Germany answered with two big rallies to decide the outcome. Chris Howard homered twice and drove in six. Ludwig Glaser and Sascha Lutz collected four hits each. Glaser drove in five, while Lutz crossed the plate four times. Chris Lemonis and Max Warren had a combined six hits and three RBI for Greece.

Enorbel Marquez-Ramirez (GER) wasn’t as sharp as usual, but limited the damage to one bad inning. He allowed ten hits, four runs and three bb in five frames overall. Max Warren (GRE) conceded nine hits, eight runs and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. Nils Hartkopf first blew a two-run lead when he threw twice over catcher Simon Guehring to allow Greece to score. Constantinos Kapothanasis took the loss.

Especially the Netherlands, France, Sweden and Italy will have a disadvantage, as they are being forced to play twice on Friday. Sweden has the toughest program of all as they will play in Stuttgart in the morning before traveling to Heidenheim in the evening. But the players probably will be happy anyway after surprisingly advancing into the second round.

It was not only rain which caused the postponements of France vs. Italy and Sweden vs. Netherlands, but also the upset by Sweden over Italy, which would have meant that they have to play in Heidenheim against the Dutch team. But obviously it wasn’t possible after the two delays in their last preliminary round game in the morning and afternoon.

European Championship 2010, Day 7, July 29:

After three days of rain and long delays, Sweden celebrated an upset 3-2 win over Italy on Thursday in Stuttgart. The game was supposed to start at 10.30am in the morning, but didn’t begin until 12pm and was interrupted again by a long delay in the sixth inning.

The team of head coach Dennis Cook had the better start, taking a 3-0 lead after a RBI single by Kris Sjoeberg in the first and back-to-back homeruns by Bjoern Johannessen and Rickard Leander in the second. Italy came out of the rain delay with back-to-back homeruns by Mario Chiarini and Giuseppe Mazzanti to cut the deficit to 2-3.

One frame later they had the chance to tie the game, when Simone Albanese advanced to third and tried to score on a flyball by Stefano De Simoni. But while it seemed that he beat the throw with a headfirst slide, home plate umpire Serge Makouchetchev called him out. It didn’t stop there, as Albanese also was ejected after arguing the call. Italy had a last chance in the top of the ninth, when Laidel Chapelli and Juan Angrisano reached first and second with two outs. But closer Nick Soubiea forced a groundout by Jack Santora to end the game.

Both starting pitchers, which also began one day earlier, returned to the mound on Thursday. Joakim Claesson (W 2-0) picked up his second win in the tournament by going six-plus innings, allowing six hits, two runs and three bb. Riccardo De Santis (L 0-1) surrendered six hits, three runs and three walks in four innings.

But while it was not important that the classification game for eleventh place between the Ukraine and Croatia got canceled, the second postponement of the remaining preliminary round game between Sweden and Italy is holding up the whole tournament. It was rescheduled to Thursday morning at 10:30am. But 40 minutes before first pitch it started raining again and the game is in another rain delay. For now, it is rescheduled for 12pm CET. But we’ll see how it goes.

Regularly it was planned that the first final round game between France and Italy would follow immediately after. Additionally if Sweden upsets Italy they earn a trip to Heidenheim for their first final-round game against the Netherlands. If not, Spain receives this assignment. In the evening Germany also is scheduled to play against Greece in Stuttgart.

It is not easy for the technical commission of the Confederation of European Baseball. However it is obvious that a European Championship, which is played in three different cities, with trips between 1.5 and 4.5 hours, is not a great idea when it rains.

The Dutch team has clinched the number one seed in Group A after the preliminary round at the European Championship with a 3-0 shutout over Germany on Wednesday in a rainy Heidenheim. The game was interrupted by a lengthy rain delay in the seventh inning. While the Netherlands waited in the dugout, the German bench players supported the efforts of the ground crew.

Leon Boyd (W 1-0) and Arshwin Asjes combined to allow just three hits and a pair of walks during nine scoreless innings to lead their team to the win. The offense scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third, when Sidney de Jong walked on four pitches with two outs and the bases loaded. After the rain delay, they added two more runs on RBI singles by Bryan Engelhardt and Sidney de Jong. Germany had a chance to come back in the eighth, when Cedric Bassel and Sascha Lutz reached base with no outs. However Jendrick Speer’s groundball to third led to a double play. They also had runners on the corners later in the frame, but a Ludwig Glaser struck out to end the threat.

Tim Henkenjohann (L 0-1) was a little bit wild, but did a great job to keep Germany in the game, giving up just two runs on four hits and six walks in 6 1/3 innings. Both starting pitchers didn’t return to the mound after the rain delay. Asjes replaced Boyd in the top of eighth, Eugen Heilmann Henkenjohann with one out and one man on in the bottom of the seventh.

Croatia picked up its first win of the European Championship with a 13-1 rout over Greece on Wednesday morning in Stuttgart. The game was totally meaningless for the final standings in the preliminary round. Due to that both teams didn’t use their usual starting lineup and gave their bench players a few at-bats. Croatia scored seven fast runs in the first three frames and ended the game due to ten-run rule after seven innings.

Danijl Levak (W 1-0) struck out seven batters in seven innings, allowing four hits, a run and three walks. At the plate Ivan Racic went 4-for-4 with homerun, four runs scored and three RBI. Benjamin Goldstrom collected three hits and three RBI. Jason Zachos denied the shutout with a solo homerun in the fifth. Constanine Kapothanasis (L 0-1) surrendered four hits and three runs (2 ER) in the first inning to take the loss.

In the afternoon Sweden hopes to upset Italy and book a ticket for the final round. But it is not going to be easy. During the Italian Baseball Week, the “Tre Kronors” had no chance. The Squadra Azzurra also cannot take the game lightly since they would take an eventual loss into the second round, if they are not winning against Sweden.

Later in the afternoon the Netherlands and Germany make another try to play their highly anticipated duel for first place in Group A in Heidenheim. There is again rain in the forecast, but the game is still on. Leon Boyd (NED) and Tim Henkenjohann (GER) will take the mound as starting pitchers.

In the evening the first classification game will be played in Stuttgart between the Ukraine and Croatia. The winner will take 11th place in the tournament. Both teams will have to play a qualifier next year, trying to win a spot for the 2012 European Championship in the Netherlands.

A solo homerun by Robert Gruber in the bottom of the eighth saved a 10-9 win over France. It was the fourth victory in the fourth game. On Wednesday at 5.30pm CET in Heidenheim they will play for the first seed in Group A against the Netherlands. Germany had taken a 5-1 lead after four innings, but France put eight runs on the board in the top of the fifth. However Greg Frady’s squad answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and the tying run in the sixth.

Gruber went 3-for-4 with a triple shy of the cycle, driving in five runs. Dominik Wulf, Ludwig Glaser, Simon Guehring and Cedric Bassel scored two runs each. Boris Marche drove in three for France. Gaspard Fessy went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Both starting pitchers, Nicolas Dubaut and Martin Dewald, only stayed on the mound for 4 1/3 innings, surrendering eight runs (7 ER), respective six (5 ER) on seven hits.

Greece eliminated Great Britain from the European Championship with a 4-3 win in ten innings on Tuesday in Neuenburg. With the victory, the Greek team will go to the final round, although they are still going to play their make-up game against Croatia on Wednesday morning in Stuttgart. After both teams scored two runs in the regular nine innings, the IBAF tiebreaker had to decide the outcome. Chris Falls put the British team ahead, when he scored on a sac fly by Sam Wiley in the top of the tenth. But Greece came back. They loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning. A walk by Peter Maestrales tied the game, while a groundout to short by Erik Pappas sealed the win for Greece.

Matt McGraw collected four hits in six at-bats. Starting pitchers Alex Smith (GBR) and Andrew Brack (GRE) pitched seven innings, allowing two, respective one run on six hits. Chris Lemonis had forced extra innings with a RBI single in the eighth.

Italy answered a Croatian lead with nine-run rally in the fourth and celebrated its fourth win in the tournament by a score of 13-1 in seven innings. Giuseppe Mazzanti and Laidel Chapelli hit homeruns and combined for six RBI. Tony Granato drove in four. Croatia had scored the first run of the game on a RBI single by Branko Nenadic in the top of the fourth.

Roberto Corradini (ITA) went four innings, allowing three hits, an unearned run and no walks, while striking out six. Yovany D’Amico (W 1-0) got the win after striking out the side in the fifth. Justin Cicatello and Marco Grifantini also pitched in the game for Italy. Matko Dabo (L 0-1) was charged with six hits, five runs and three bb in 3 1/3 innings. Relievers Marin Farkas and Hrvoje Toljanic conceded eight more runs before Denis Kresnik threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to close it out.

Italy’s third baseman Juan Infante had to be taken to a hospital after he collided with Croatia’s first baseman Ernesto Pereira.

Croatia has to play two games on Wednesday, as they are facing Greece in the make-up game in the morning and the Ukraine in the first classification game in the evening.

The Netherlands won its fourth game at the European Championship, when they beat Belgium 10-0. Bas de Jong put the team of Jim Stoeckel ahead with a solo homerun in the second. Six runs between the fifth and the seventh, five of them trough homeruns by Dirk van’t Klooster and Eugene Kingsale blew things wide open.

On the mound Kevin Heijstek (W 1-0) got the win, allowing just four hits and a walk in eight scoreless innings. He was opposed by Tom Lorrentop (L 0-1), who did a nice jobs in the beginning, but lost his rhythm in the fifth. He issued nine hits, five runs and a bb in 4 1/3 innings overall.

Spain’s offense finally woke up and out-slugged Sweden en route to a 16-6 win in seven innings on Tuesday in Heidenheim. Four early runs in the first three innings put them ahead before Sweden cut the deficit to a run. But Spain was able to answer every comeback try of their opponents and won easily by ten-run rule in the end.

Daniel Martinez and William Domero combined for five hits, two homeruns and ten RBI. Seven players crossed the plate twice. For the team of Dennis Cook, Peter Johannessen homered and collected four RBI. His brother Bjoern went 3-for-3 with a RBI.

Remigio Leal (W 1-0) received the win, pitching in relief of Antonio Noguera, who allowed four hits, three runs (1 ER) and a walk in 3 2/3 innings. Kent Karlsson (L 0-1) issued eight hits, seven runs and three bb in 3 2/3 innings.

After making the trip from Neuenburg to Stuttgart, the French National Team beat Belgium on Tuesday 8-2 and clinched a spot in the final round. It was their third victory in the fourth game.

Belgium had the better start, as they took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a RBI single by Hans Heyrman. They could have scored more, but a bunt by Benjamin Dille was caught in the air and led to a double play.

In the bottom of the frame, France scored six runs against TJ Antonacci (L 1-1) with a three-run double by Gaspard Fessy being the lone hard hit ball. The big rally obviously decided the outcome early. Maxime Lefevre scored twice for France.

Pierrick Lemestre (W 1-0) gave up nine hits, two runs (1 ER) and four bb in seven innings for the win. Antonacci wasn’t as sharp as usual, giving up five hits, six unearned runs and three walks in six innings. Both teams are playing another game today. Belgium takes on the Netherlands starting at 2.30pm, while France faces Germany in the night game.

In afternoon at the Stuttgart Reds ballpark they will take on the Dutch national team. Pitching coach Steve Janssen wouldn’t reveal the identity of their starter. They are probably waiting, if Antonacci is going to face them. In the evening game in Stuttgart, Germany is playing against France. Tim Henkenjohann and Martin Dewald are the two candidates for the team of head coach Greg Frady. Nicolas Dubaut is the most likely option for France.

In Heidenheim Spain is fighting for its last chance for a spot in the final round against Sweden. Team Espana needs to get into a tie with the “Tre Kronors” and Great Britain. For that scenario, Greece also needs to beat the British squad in the lone game in Neuenburg. Additionally Italy is facing Croatia and the Ukraine the Czech Republic. Both games will be played in Heidenheim.

The afternoon game between Greece and Croatia in Stuttgart was suspended in the top of the fifth inning due to rain with the Greek team leading 7-1 after a solo homerun and a two-run double by Erik Pappas. There were two rain delays of about one hour each earlier in the match. The game will not resume in the fifth frame, but is going to be replayed from the beginning.

The evening games on Monday, Italy vs. Sweden in Stuttgart and Germany vs. Netherlands in Heidenheim, got cancelled. While the game between the German and the Dutch National Team most likely will be made up on Wednesday at 5 or 6pm in Heidenheim, make-up dates for the other two games will not be announced before Tuesday evening.

One day before playing two games against Belgium and Germany in Stuttgart, France picked up its second win in the tournament against the Ukraine, celebrating an easy 10-2 win in Neuenburg. Especially the French offense had a nice day, scoring runs in seven of the first eight innings. Omar Williams and Joris Bert collected three hits apiece. Boris Marche and Kenji Hagiwara combined for four RBI. Felix Brown walked four times. Denys Agapov and Olexiy Glukhiy scored the two runs for the Ukraine in the fourth, cutting the deficit in a half.

On the mound Anthony Piquet (W 1-0) went the distance, allowing two hits, two unearned runs and four walks in nine strong innings. He threw 114 pitches, but only struck out one. Viktor Dovgalenko (L 0-1) was charged with two hits, three runs and five bb in two-plus innings to take the loss. Afterwards the 19-year-old Dmytro Limarenko also couldn’t stop the bleeding and the Ukraine suffered its fourth defeat in the fourth game.

Former Philadelphia Phillies minor leaguer Jakub Sladek went 3-for-3 with three doubles and reaching base in all five of his plate appearances. He scored twice and drove in three. Tomas Polansky and Jakub Malik also crossed the plate twice. Belgium scored their lone run in the eighth on an error.

Petr Minarik (W 1-0) allowed seven hits, a run and a walk in eight innings. He only struck out two, but forced opposing batters in 14 groundouts. Kenny Vandenbranden (L 0-1) surrendered ten hits, seven runs and a base on balls in 1 2/3 innings.

Daniel Sanchez had tied the game for Spain in the top of the fifth with a solo homerun.

The evening games at the three venues will be highlighted by the matchup between the Netherlands and Germany in Heidenheim, which will be the decisive game for first place in Group A. Italy also won its third game of the European Championship easily, defeating Great Britain 12-2 in seven innings. Anthony Granato became the third batter of the Squadra Azzurra in the last three games to go deep twice in a game, going 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI overall. Laidel Chapelli had another nice day at the plate. He collected a homerun, three singles, two runs and three RBI in four at-bats. The British team only was able to avoid the shutout with a two-run shot by Sam Wiley in the seventh. But it was not enough to get a rally going.

Cody Cillo (W 1-0) received the starting nod and only gave up a fourth-inning single and a pair of walks in five scoreless innings, striking out seven. Chris Di Roma closed it out. On the opposing side, Michael Renery (L 0-1) conceded nine hits, eight runs and four bb in four innings. Ethan Mack and Ted Gieschen also got in the game. Catcher Mitch Evans did hurt his arm (irritated nerv) on a throw to second and had to be replaced behind the plate by Sam Wiley.

The day starts in Stuttgart with the Great Britain – Italy matchup. The British team received a strong start by Brian Essery, but still lost to Sweden, as they couldn’t take advantage of a few opportunities against Joakim Claesson, hitting into five double plays. Italy crushed Greece in Heidenheim thanks to two grand slams and four homeruns overall.

The Tre Kronors will travel to Heidenheim for the first game, playing against Croatia. Sweden is 1-1 and still on course to the final round, while Croatia already has its backs to the wall after two losses. But they will send Ernesto Pereira to the mound, probably their best starter on staff.

In the afternoon Germany will try to improve to 3-0 against Belgium. They had beaten the “Red Devils” twice in exhibition games before the tournament, but won’t take things lightly, as the team of Sven Hendrickx also had a nice start into the event with a shutout over the Ukraine. Andre Hughes is pitching for Germany, while Kenny Vandenbranden could be the guy on the opposing side. Germany’s head coach Greg Frady gives Chris Howard the start behind the plate.

The Czech Republic, which probably has to suffer most from the rescheduling after the rainouts, will play France in the lone game in Neuenburg on Sunday. Leos Kubat takes the mound for head coach Arnost Nesnal. The French team used Joris Navarro against the Dutch team and should send one of the trio Samuel Meurant, Anthony Piquet and Pierrick Lemestre, as starting pitcher into the game.

After two shutout losses the Ukraine faces another tough assignment, as they are taking on the Netherlands in the evening game in Heidenheim. It is quite possible that Jim Stoeckel empties the bench, as they will play twice on Monday. The game between Spain and Greece in Stuttgart concludes the day in the evening. Both teams are 1-1 and still have their fate in their hands. However the loser already would be on verge of elimination.

They scored five runs in the first three innings against Boris Bokaj (L 0-1), who settled in afterwards allowing just one more run. He kept things close and the team of Arnost Nesnal closed the deficit to four runs thanks to a two-run homerun by Tomas Polansky in the eighth.

Dominik Wulf hit a leadoff homerun for Germany in the third. Klaus Hopfensperger went 2-for-3 with a double. On the mound Enorbel Marquez-Ramirez (W 1-0) wasn’t dominant, but still kept the Czech offense off the board, allowing seven hits and two walks in seven scoreless innings. He struck out eight. Eugen Heilmann came in and gave up a double and a homerun, but settled down and finished the game by striking out five of the last seven batters.

Italy celebrated another lopsided win with a 13-1 rout in seven innings against Greece on Saturday in Heidenheim. The team of manager Marco Mazzieri hit four homeruns, two of them grand slams. It was their second win in the second game.

Giuseppe Mazzanti homered with the bases loaded in the third to get his squad a 4-1 lead. Light-hitting infielder Jack Santora hit a grand slam in the sixth after two runs already had scored on wild pitches. The other three runs got on the board through a two-run homerun by Laidel Chapelli in the fifth and a solo shot by Mazzanti in the seventh. Greece looked for the upset, when Nicholas Theodorou scored on a wild pitch in the opening period. But their hopes only lasted till the third.

Tiago da Silva (W 1-0) went five strong innings, allowing just two hits, a run and a walk, while striking out five. Carlos Pezzullo closed it out. On the opposing side Efthymios Karkatselos (L 0-1) was charged with seven hits, six runs and seven walks in five-plus innings.

Sweden has its first win at the 2010 European Championship. Joakim Claesson (W 1-0) and a strong defensive performance lifted them to a 4-1 win over Great Britain on Saturday afternoon in Stuttgart. The right-hander from Stockholm went 8 2/3 innings, allowing one run on nine hits and four walks. He got some help from his defense, which turned five double plays in the game, erasing several scoring opportunities for the British squad.

Magnus Pilegård put Sweden ahead in the top of the second thanks to a balk by Great Britain’s Brian Essery (L 0-1). One frame later Rickard Reimer and Kris Sjoeberg made it 3-0 with a pair of RBI singles. An error led to the second run by Tony Dermendziev in the fifth and the fourth run for Sweden overall. The British team had one last chance to come back, as they loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but only managed a run by Mitch Evans on a bases loaded walk by Mike Trask. Richard Klijn grounded out to third to end the game.

Terence Antonacci (W 1-0) pitched a complete game shutout to lead Belgium to a 9-0 victory over the Ukraine in Heidenheim on Saturday. He allowed just four hits in the game, throwing 75 of his 101 pitches for strikes. He struck out seven.

On offense the Belgian team scored in five of the first six innings to support their ace with a comfortable lead from early on. Every batter out of the top six in the order picked up at least two hits, first baseman Hans Heyrman three. Dennis Ribbens scored three times. Benjamin Dille and Heyrman combined for four RBI.

Denys Agapov had two hits for the Ukraine, which was shut out for the second straight day. Roman Yatsyuk (L 0-1) received the starting nod and surrendered ten hits, eight runs (7 ER) and a walk in four-plus innings.
