Team USA and Canada started their four-game exhibition series on American soil to finish their preparations for the Olympic Games in Beijing on Friday in Cary, North Carolina. Canada took home a 4-3 win in ten innings, when Stubby Clapp led off the top of the tenth with a walk, stole second and came around on a double by Scott Thorman.
Brian Barden had tied the game in the bottom of the eighth to force extra innings with a solo homerun. The maple leafs had taken the lead in the top of the frame, scoring three times on a RBI single by Clapp and a two-run double by Mike Saunders. Matt LaPorta also hit a homerun for the USA.
Both teams used the opportunity to get some work in for their pitchers. Brett Anderson started and went four scoreless innings for the stars and stripes. Jonathan Lockwood pitched three solid innings in his start for Canada. Scott Richmond picked up the win, Jeff Stevens the loss.
