Australia got off to a perfect start into the 2009 Baseball World Cup. They crushed host Czech Republic 17-4 on Wednesday afternoon. They scored six runs in the first three innings and six alone in ninth to seal the victory. Timothy Kennelly (4 runs, 4 RBI) homered twice, Matthew Graham and Stefan Welch once. Martin Schneider put the ball over the fence for the home team.
Liam Hendricks and Drew Naylor (W 1-0) combined to throw four no-hit innings at the beginning of the game. Six more hurlers came in later, including Dushan Ruzic of DOOR NEPTUNUS. Jakub Toufar (L 0-1), a former minor leaguer in the Minnesota Twins system, took the loss, issuing four hits, five runs and two bb in two-plus innings.
