The Netherlands stunned Team USA on Friday evening with a 7-5 win to remain unbeaten in Group 1 at the 2011 IBAF Baseball World Cup. A three-run homerun by Curt Smith and a bases clearing triple by Jonathan Schoop put them on the path of the upset. Joe Thurston had four hits and two RBI for the defending champion. Allan Pollock hit a homerun. Diegomar Markwell (W, 1-0) issued eight hits, four runs (3 ER) and a bb in six solid innings. Matt Shoemaker (L, 0-1) gave up six hits, seven runs and three walks in three innings to take the loss.
