British Briefing: Big weekend approaches in NBL

by Joe GrayBritish Briefing: Big weekend approaches in NBL

Although the four postseason berths were sealed some weeks ago, the regular season is still simmering, thanks to two separate races emerging. LONDON (17-5) and RICHMOND (13-7) are fighting for the top spot, while HERTS (12-10) and BRACKNELL (10-10) are still to settle the battle for third place. For the CROYDON PIRATES (0-20) – the other team in the National Baseball League (NBL) – the season offers only four more chances to pick up a first victory.

RICHMOND will prove to be difficult opposition for the visiting PIRATES on Sunday, and a sweep for the home side would set up a dramtic climax to the season: they would travel to the LONDON METS on 16 August knowing that two wins would secure a share of the league pennant.

The other double-header this Sunday sees the HERTS FALCONS host BRACKNELL. A sweep for the FALCONS would guarantee them third place outright in the league, while a split would secure at least a share of that position.

In addition to the league placings, there are still many individual categories still to be decided. For full sortable NBL stats, follow the instructions here: http://www.gbbsa.org.uk/current.html#fs.

In spite of these fascinating tussles, the four-team National Baseball Championship on 29 and 30 August remains the highlight of the baseball year as it is from this event that the National Champion will be decided.
