Last weekend, the HERTS FALCONS swept the RICHMOND FLAMES in a hard-fought double-header to create a four-way tie at the top of the National Baseball League (NBL), involving these two teams as well as the BRACKNELL BLAZERS and the LONDON METS.
This sets up the unexpected prospect of the newly promoted FALCONS side gaining an outright lead in the NBL this coming weekend. They will travel to play the CROYDON PIRATES at Roundshaw, the scene of another FALCONS’ sweep, back on opening day. Should HERTS win both games, they will become sole occupiers of the NBL top spot if LONDON and RICHMOND split their double-header at Finsbury Park, which is a likely outcome.
Few people would have expected HERTS to be in range of first spot so far into the 2009 season (on Sunday RICHMOND became the first team to have completed half of the scheduled 24 games). All four of the FALCONS’ wins over the other leading teams to date have been by a solitary run, with the decisive score being tallied in the last or penultimate inning on each occasion.
