The first European tournament for blind baseball will be held in Freising, Germany, this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, September 3 and 4. Two teams from Italy, the Milan Tornados and the Bologna Ambassadors, will compete against the Freising Grizzlies (hosts for the tournament) and the Nogent-sur-Marne Bandits. The Nogent team is the first blind baseball team in France. Nogent is just east of Paris. The Freising Grizzlies are the first blind baseball team in Germany. Freising is 40 kilometers north of Munich.
The tournament will pit a selection of experienced Italian players, where blind baseball has been played for the past fifteen years, against the upstart German and French teams. A round robin will be played on Saturday with playoffs on Sunday. Franz Fischer of the Freising team has organized the invitational and hopes to make this an annual event.
