Sweden and Israel remain as lone undefeated countries in the B-Level European Championship in Vienna, Austria after day three of the preliminary round. Sweden downed Poland in the morning game. In the evening matchup Israel prevailed over host Austria. In the afternoon Lithuania earned its first win of the tournament. Austria now needs a win against Sweden in Thursday evening affair to keep their final chances alive. Israel and Sweden will meet on Friday.
Sweden – Poland 13-4
Sweden scored five runs in the first two frames and five in the fourth to defeat Poland 13-4 in the first game in Vienna on Wednesday. Joel Johnson homered and scored two runs. Peter Johannessen crossed the plate four times. His brother Bjoern went 4-for-5 with four RBI. Jakob Syren went the distance, issuing nine hits, four runs (3 ER) and five walks. Jacob Sokolowski got charged with the loss. Pawel Jasiakiewicz went 3-for-4 with a triple for Poland.
Belarus – Lithuania 4-10
Lithuania entered the win column in Vienna with a 10-4 victory over Belarus in the afternoon game. Belarus took a 4-1 lead after three innings, but a four-run fifth gave Lithuania the advantage. They tacked on a couple of insurance runs and sealed the win. Edvarda Matusevicius and Klaidas Stravinskas scored three runs apiece for Lithuania. Marius Balandis settled down after the rocky start and received the win after giving up four hits, four runs (3 ER) and seven walks in 6 2/3 innings. Eimantas Zickus closed it out. Andrej Los took the loss after replacing Uladzisla Barashenka with one out in the first.
Austria – Israel 1-10
In a meeting between two undefeated teams, Israel scored six runs in the first three frames of a 10-1 win over Austria. Simon Rosenbaum hit his second home run of the tournament and drove in two. Eitan Maoz went 4-for-6. Shlomo Lipetz, who had pitched in relief in the memorable walk-off win over Poland, went the distance allowing five hits, one run and two walks in nine innings, while striking out eight. Felix Zimmerle conceded seven hits, six runs and two base on balls in 3 1/3 innings to take the loss.
