Day five at the B-Level European Championship in Karlovac, Croatia had only statistical merit. Croatia and Slovakia already were qualified for the final on Saturday. The championship game takes place at 4pm. On Friday the Ukraine clinched third place in the final standings with a shutout over Bulgaria. Croatia remained undefeated with a win over Slovenia.
Slovakia – Switzerland
No game was played in the morning, as rain forced the cancellation of the matchup between Slovakia and Switzerland. The postponement ended the career as head coach of the Swiss National Team for Andy Fleischacker, who is leaving for Florida in September.
Ukraine – Bulgaria 4-0
In the afternoon the Ukraine clinched third place in the final standings with a 4-0 shutout over Bulgaria. Dmytro Limarenko won a pitcher’s duel against Evgenii Chernozemsky. Limarenko struck out nine in nine innings, allowing just four hits and a walk. Chernozemsky conceded five hits, four runs (3 ER) and four base on balls in eight frames. He struck out eight. Bogdan Stovba scored twice.
Slovenia – Croatia 4-11
Croatia overcame a 0-2 deficit to defeat Slovenia 11-4. Four runs in the fifth gave the host the lead. Four runs in the ninth blew the score open. Antonio Horvatic went 2-for-4 with a home run and four runs scored. Filip Furjan struck out seven in seven innings to pick up the win. He allowed three hits, four unearned runs and six bb. Rok Cucek actually struck out three more in only six innings, but also got charged with four hits, five runs (2 ER) and also six walks to take the loss.
