Australia loses warm-up opener

NSW 100 026 000 9 12 3
AUS 231 000 001 7 10 2
The Australian National Team didn’t get a perfect start into their exhibition schedule. They lost the first of two matches against the New South Wales (NSW) Patriots by a score of 7-9.

The National squad scored six runs in the first three frames to take a fast 6-1 lead. But they could not hold on. The Pats rallied for eight runs in the fifth and sixth inning to build up a three-run advantage. Australia tried to come back in the ninth, though failed to tie game.

Glenn WILLIAMS and Andrew UTTING led the team with two hits and three RBI each.

Starter Steve KENT gave up one run on four hits in four innings. He threw 60 pitches, 41 for strikes. Mark KELLY (L 0-1) relieved him, allowing six hits, eight runs (5 ER) and one walk, while striking out six in four innings. Brendan WISE finished off with a scoreless ninth.

Australia will meet the NSW Patriots on Saturday again, before facing fellow Olympic qualifier participant Canada in a four-game series next week.
