For the first time the Astros Valencia have won the championship in the Spanish Division de Honor. On Saturday they defeated CB Viladecans 10-0 and 13-3 on the last game day of the 2016 season to defend first place in the standings.
Last year’s champion Tenerife Marlins finished with the same 24-4 record after 6-2 and 6-0 wins over CD Pamplona. However Tenerife has lost the tiebreaker against the Astros. The season series between the two teams ended also with a tie 2-2, but while the Marlins captured their two wins with three runs difference overall, Valencia won by a combined 11 runs.
It’s the first time in the history that the Astros have won the title and the first time since the Piratas de Madrid in 1981 that a team not based in Barcelona or Tenerife has won the Spanish baseball championship.
