The Heidenheim Heidekoepfe announced that infielder Andrew Smith returns to the team for the 2014 season and could stay in Germany long-term. The 29-year-old American, who is currently an assistant coach for the NCAA Division II Dixie State College, first came to Europe in 2009 playing for the Templiers Senart in the French Division I. In 2011 and 2012, as well as a couple of games in 2013, Smith joined the Heidekoepfe. In all four seasons in Europe he was one of the best hitters in the league. He not only will play for Heidenheim, but also is going to coach the farm team of the club, succeeding Troy Williams who has left to become head coach of the Stuttgart Reds. The Heidekoepfe that Smith, who is married to a German wife, will stay with the team also on a long-term basis.
