Alex Liddi starts again, Chances for Roger Bernadina improve

Alex Liddi: The Italian third baseman Alex Liddi got another start for the Seattle Mariners on Thursday against the Colorado Rockies. Playing the hot corner and batting ninth, the San Remo native went 0-for-2. It was his fourth appearance during Spring Training in Arizona for the big leaguers. He has one hit so far, a double, in seven at-bats.

Roger Bernadina: Outfielder Roger Bernadina didn’t play on Thursday since the Nationals had an off day. However his chances of making the opening day roster have improved in the last two days. Washington, D.C. released Elijah Dukes on Wednesday, who was considered as the favorite of landing the starter job in right field. Bernadina is batting .263 (OBP .391/SLG .263) in eleven games for the Nats this spring. GM Mike Rizzo spoke about the situation on Thursday.

Rick van den Hurk: Dutch right-handed pitcher Rick van den Hurk spent parts of last winter playing in the Puerto Rican Winter League. This summer he could get a chance to return to the Caribbean country. His Florida Marlins are scheduled to play a three-game series against the New York Mets from June 28 to 30 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Wladimir Balentien: Outfielder Wladimir Balentien, who arrived in Cincinnati last summer after being traded by the Mariners, is 6-for-20 with a homerun, a triple, a double, two runs scored and two RBI in nine games for the Reds, competing for a spot on the opening day roster. He also has a walk and three strikeouts. He went 1-for-2 on Thursday against the Indians, starting in right field.

Andruw Jones: Curacao-native Andruw Jones was signed by the Chicago White Sox this winter to fill the designated hitter role. He is having a nice spring, going 8-for-20 with four extra base hits, six runs scored and seven RBI in eight games. Melissa Isaacson of ESPN Chicago did a profile on Jones.
