After a one-year break infielder Alexander Lauterbach returns to the German Baseball-Bundesliga. The Heidenheim Heidekoepfe announced on Tuesday that they have signed the 28-year-old former member of the German national team. After playing for the Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg from 2000 to 2009 he didn’t get a new contract for the 2010 season and contemplated retirement while wearing the jersey of the Schwaig Red Lions in the German sixth division.
Now Lauterbach joins fellow former Regensburg players Michael Weigl and Martin Almstetter in Heidenheim. He has a .317 batting average (OBP .401/SLG .507) in 251 games in the Baseball-Bundesliga. He won the German championship with the Buchbinder Legionaere in 2008 and was named best batter in the southern division of the Baseball-Bundesliga in 2005. He was part of the German national team during the European Championships 2005 and 2007 as well as the Final Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2008.
