Here’s a quick look at the South Africans in the minor leagues.
Gift Ngoepe, Pittsburgh Pirates.
Current team: Indianapolis Indians (AAA)
Ngoepe has 247 at bats in 74 games this season. He has 22 extra base hits and 5 stolen bases in 6 attempts. He’s hitting .227/.289/.352.
Anthony Phillips, Los Angeles Angels.
Current team: Arkansas Travelers (AA)
Phillips has played 72 games with 221 at bats this season in Double-A. He has 8 extra base hits, 20 walks, 52 strikeouts, and is 4-12 on stolen bases. He’s hitting .240/.306/.290.
Dylan Unsworth, Seattle Mariners.
Current team: Jacksonville Generals (AA)
Unsworth was selected to represent South Africa in the MLB All-Star Futures Game, but he was unable to participate due to injuries. He remains on the Disabled List since our last update, having last pitched June 7th.
Vince Deyzel, Pittsburgh Pirates.
Current team: GCL Pirates (rookie)
Deyzel made his professional debut as the GCL season started, and has appeared in 5 games (for a total of 7.2 innings) over the past 3 weeks. He has struck out 8 and walked 4 while allowing 9 hits and 5 runs. His record stands at 0-1.
Victor Ngoepe, Pittsburgh Pirates.
Current team: GCL Pirates (rookie)
The Johannesburg native and younger brother of Gift (above), Victor made his professional debut after signing this winter. He’s hitting .217 overall through 17 games, .278 in his last 10 games. He has walked 4 times, struck out 16, and stolen 4 bases in 5 attempts.
Callan Pearce, Minnesota Twins.
Current team: GCL Twins (rookie)
Pearce has 10 innings pitched across 7 games. He is 1-0 with a save, allowing 9 hits and 3 walks while striking out 11. He has yet to allow an earned run.
Another to consider is Nigerian-born Demi Orimoloye.
